Living in harmony with nature
The site is located on the rural outskirts of Tohma,Hokkaido.
The father works as a mountain guide, the mother paints with watercolors, and the
son attends primary school and they live, work and farm together. The family had
been renting the farm house left behind by the farmer’s retirement. However they
welcomed the opportunity of having the grandmother, who had been living by
herself, to start designing their new house.
After living in the area for some time, the family was longing to have a firewood
stove could run through the night. They normally have to get up in the middle of
the night to add more firewood in order to beat the early morning cold. This
experience has taught them that fire wood is one of the most economical heat
resources, regardless of the effort it takes to keep the stove running. The lowest
temperature during the midwinter in Tohma could go as low as minus 25 degrees
Celsius, which reiterates the fundamental functions of houses to provide a well-
insulated enclosure for families.
We were very moved by the way the family coexisted with nature’s severity,
when we first heard the story about their everyday life throughout the year,
probably because we felt their life is running along the course of nature,
spontaneously.

The central atrium consolidates the whole dwelling into a unified space.
The concrete-floor area that also serves as a living room is filled by the
gentle reflected light pouring through the large window at its highest point.
This space, based on the architect’s intention“to heat the whole house with a
single wood-burning stove”seems to have been further deepened to a space
which draws the eye upward, having a depth that can only be understood
through experience. Although the form appears complex at first sight from
the exterior, it is structurally unforced and rational, exemplified by the way
in which pillars allocated in square grids are diagonally connected, and on
which the folded plane of the roof is placed. The interior is made up of six
different floor levels, which follow a counterclockwise spiral. The space
maintains a continuity in which the family can sense each other’s presence
but without mutual intrusion. In the split-level floor plan, the beams
connecting with the pillars are closely spaced, which also increases the
rigidity of the atrium space floor and the external walls. Located in a semi-
rural setting on the edge of the city, this dwelling projects all the substance
of a structural form, while nevertheless achieving an economical structure
and the heating efficiency required in the region’s cold and snowy climate. It
presents one possible architectural model for Hokkaido.

The concept is the square.
This gymnasium is designed by“Enclosure Planning”. Main arena is
surrounded by clubrooms, machine training room, budokan and sub arena.
The students are able to see games and practice of sports from the lounge
deck of clubrooms, as if you look at market and festival from windows of
buildings surrounding and facing the square, and the lounge of clubrooms is
like a royal box. At the new gymnasium, the communication between
students is coming about.
The thermal environment is quite stable in the main arena, because it has
sufficient thermal insulation properties by enclosure plan, and the floor
heating and cooling together with geothermal heat pump system is used.
I have been planning the college campus in cold region so far. I think this
arena could be the place like winter-garden(atrium)to enjoy the campus
life of students.

This is a multipurpose sports complex on a university campus. Its aim is
to increase student convenience by bringing together existing gym facilities
and to additionally put into practice architectural technology developed for
cold and snowy climates by researchers at the university. The central arena,
which occupies most of the floor area, is the focal point of sightlines from
the clubhouse, training room and other peripherally located facilities,
forming an imposing space which has the animation of a public plaza. Made
of concrete with a high heat capacity, the walls of the arena maintain, in
combination with the highly heat-insulated outer shell, a low load and
congenial heat environment through the use of their thermal properties.
Because the structure maintains a steady temperature even when not under
air conditioning, it is envisioned as a place of refuge open to the local
community in the event of a wintertime disaster. The exterior design is
marked by a range of methods of environmental burden reduction such as
the vertical solar panels on the walls and the sun-shading effect of the
protruding eaves and the deep-set doors and windows. It succeeds as a new
symbol for the university.

Kadare is a three storied complex composed of Theater, Library, Community
Hall, Education Laboratory, Product Pavilion, Restaurant and more. It consists
of three main zones. Firstly, there is“Gathering Street”. which penetrates the
building in a north-south direction. It is an access space to all the programs
of Kadare. People will gather and quest and communicate in this bright
street full of exciting stimuli. Secondly, there is“Super Box”which is a
formation of Theater, Citizen Activity Room, Gallery and pocket parks
combined. These facilities can be connected together to make a 135meters
long dynamic and spacious tunnel. And lastly, the“Planetarium and
Astronomical Observation Room”is the oval sphere floating above the library
which can be used in collaboration with Natural Science Study Room and
other rooms such as the Training Room. To make these programs and
original shape for its region, we should not force the shape but think together
through the workshop with the locals.

Without the spirit of the architect, who says“I am still trying to improve
my graduation work”, he could not have coped with inundating requests
from the workshop, nor struggles with both virtual and real during the
course of realization. This struggle led to the creation of a unique
heterogeneous space containing a sense of topophilia – an attachment to the
locality. In the six months or so from late fall through winter, the low and
weak light of the fast-moving Tohoku sun is cast through slit-like spaces
known as‘cracks’into the multi-purpose rooms along the axis of Wai-Wai
Street. This invites the public in, despite the managerial deficiencies of poor
visibility. Particularly the‘cracks’around the library are overwhelming. This
sensual experience is in tune with the physical constitution of people who
live in the snow country. Encountering knowledge in the form of books here
may lead to a new constitutional development. Evolution was not confined to
the savannah but also took place in caves, according to some theories. If
transparency is the extension of the savannah, then the extension of the cave
is perhaps what this work Kadare suggests. Despite discussions concerning
the similarity with another facility by the same architect and the local
landscape preservation focused on Mount Chokai, the work received high
praise. An issue going forward will be to maintain and enhance the potential.

“Bamboo Ark”is built by student volunteers on the coast of Kesennuma to
replace the former building which was swept away by the tsunami.
Composed entirely of local bamboo, its pliant qualities are used to form
multiple arches over a circular plan.
It was difficult construction work because of all hand-made ,however,
students did not give up.
What impressed me most was the smile of children in this region. Although a
city planning from a macroscopic point of view is necessary for the recovery
from the great disaster, we can also expect spontaneous recovery of the town
based on the assembly of local activities. The bonds of small local activities
will develop as the whole recovery of the town in future. We are happy if our
plan can play a role as one of such activities.

Two years have passed since the earthquake disaster and recovery is still
under way, which makes definite assessment difficult. Temporary shelters,
which have been attempted in various regions, should be recorded and
assessed as a separate category. Here therefore, the one which was
outstanding in its attempt as temporary architecture and its resulting space
was chosen. Bamboo buildings are found frequently in other countries, but
in Japan, as far as I know, one rarely sees it used for the principal structure.
The construction process, which involved further developing of ideas and
building of mockups in this remote location through exchanges with local
residents and engineers on site, can be commended as a leading example of
support from the architectural world. The space created similarly creates a
distinctive impression thanks to the suppleness of the bamboo and the soft
membrane material. On the other hand, now that the initial operational
period is over, the structure standing beside the main road appears to have
a certain loneliness typical of non-used facilities, and some may say that the
building of the structure became an end in itself. However, at the time,
building it provided hope. As a significant example representative of many
temporary shelters, this work will leave a firm impression on people.

Hobara elementary school has 800 pupils with four classes in each
grade. After the committee of local government, citizens and
experts discussed its program, the competition for appointing
architect was held. Major feature of this school is an auditorium
and a citizen’s base and a pupil club. On top of that, different spatial
feature and comfortableness in the classroom area of every two
grade was established for different teaching demands for growing
pupils.
In the spatial formation of the site, three wings in white enclose the

The concept of a school community in the historic area of Date had been
evolving for several years. The construction process to crystallize this
concept was interrupted by the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, after
which the project overcame numerous challenges including decontamination
of the site’s surface soil. Located on the southern side, the sports field is
surrounded on three sides by the school facilities, together with 2 arenas and
lecture hall open to the local community, as well as the after-school club
building. Despite challenges such as; that the lower schoolyear zone ended
up being away from the administrative zone that the overall impression is of
an inorganic white monotone despite the inclusion of primary colors; and that
energy consumption is somewhat excessive, it is a great achievement that
the facilities open to the community are utilized more actively than envisaged
in the original concept. The layout of the school section provides spaces in
keeping with the children’s different stages of development, while the
architectural expression facing the main highway on the north side, the
tiered theater which is an extension of the staircase, and the lighting,
ventilation and meetings of consciousness provided by the horizontal and
vertical openings that link adjacent spaces, create an enjoyable school
building which raises the children’s ability concerning spatial conception.

This chapel is built to commemorate the 120 anniversary of its founding, in the
center of the campus surrounded by rich nature.
Comfortable space under the eaves splashing out to the square of semi-circular
gently welcomes visitors.
Approach to the chapel is a corridor surrounding the courtyard of water.
Going through the serene sounds of this corridor, you can leave the day-to-day
bustle, refine the senses, and walk towards the worship with a calm feeling.
To create centripetal atmosphere appropriate to sacred place for prayers, the plan
gets narrower and the ceiling gets higher toward the pulpit.
Furthermore, in order to produce the best sound by the form of chapel itself, we
decided the shape of chapel by repeating acoustic simulation to control the
reflection of sounds, coping with both enrichment of the sound of the pipe organ
and clear audibility of talk.
Roofing material integrated with solar power panel is adopted for the steeply
pitched roof to cater the power of the chapel. Rainwater is reused to water of the
pond through circulating filter system. Not only the worship, Charity concerts open
to the general public is also held, to make the university interact with local
community.

The project is a Christian chapel of protestant denomination on a
university campus. Entering the chapel, the expanse of the wall surfaces to
left and right and the rise of the ceiling towards the altar in front create a
spatial composition that lifts the spirit, while the vertical slit of a window
behind the altar gives the gratifying impression of light pouring down from
heaven. The walls with their irregular vertical planes together with the form
of the sloping ceiling were created following repeated sound simulations
designed to give the optimum resonance to the different acoustic properties
of both speech and music. This approach speaks of the resources available
only to a major corporate practice. The inner garden serving as an approach
to the chapel, with its water feature, water sounds and greenery, contrasts
with the chapel’s expanse of space to assert a human sense of scale. On the
other hand, the location and design of the toilet, which faces the garden,
were the subject of comment by the board of review. The use of solar panels
on the large roof and the recycling of rainwater for the garden reflect the
advanced level of environmental adaptation, which also contributes to making
this an outstanding piece of work.

The school building was realized through placing an importance on contact
with nature and human beings and creating a space where students can
learn without inhibition. It is consistent with Teikyo University’s educational
goals of eliciting the individual interest of students and having them seek
“their own way.”
The goal of creating an eco-friendly building was achieved through the large
roof that provides a link to the natural environment, and the long eaves that
create light and shadow, and allow for the flow of air and water.
A media center spanning three consecutive stories is provided in the center
of the school house, and is designed to be the“core center for learning.”
Given that it is freely accessible from any floor, multi-dimensional studies,
discussions, and presentations will take place. The construction itself creates
a sense of continuation and unity of learning.

The project is an elementary school, on a site surrounded by residential
areas and natural forest, whose execution reflects the strong commitment to
education of the parties involved. Arranged in an atrium style around the
split-level plan media center, also serving as a library, floors accommodating
all school years form a unified learning space shared by all students. The
media center creates an animated communication space for open
consultation of books and documents as well as discussion while at the same
time providing niche spaces for quiet reading. Special-purpose classrooms
are concentrated on the first floor where the lower school years are located,
promoting natural interaction between the upper and lower school years
and interest in the special-purpose classrooms from school entry age. The
architect has also participated in the creation of a new learning space with
this project. The visualization of environmental issues in the biotope and
solar panels combines with a solar heat collection system to promote energy-
saving in the elementary school environment, where energy use follows an
irregular pattern. The large sloping roof serves as a landmark, while the
exterior wall, whose signature note is the varied expression of wooden
materials, is sensed to enfold protectively this rich educational space.

This housing complex was built in Tsukishima known as attractive alleyways. The
alleyways have a lot of old wooden 2-storey houses, but also hold spread new high-
rise housing complexes around the area. This contrastive undesirable relationship
between 2 types of houses in this area should be concerned.
It can be said that one of the element of the alleyways is peculiar smallness. To
make connection to the town, this building was made by unit as small as possible.
At the same time, every room has got a double-height space to have a stretch of
the rooms. To make various apartment, we considered every direction should be
available whether the façade faces road or not. This façade avoid pressure of big
outward appearance.
In this building, the walls and ceilings were painted by uneven foundation plaster,
so that scars or stains can get peculiar characters. Outside concrete walls are also
used smaller lauan panel mould which is difficult to control homogeneous
appearance. This printed grain of wood on the concrete wall also fits inside of lauan
wood furniture. This building can accept passage of the time in surrounding
intensive changes.

With the vertically oriented core alternately enclosed by L-shape plan
maisonnettes, the plan of the building is as it were a three-dimensional
interpretation of an elevation of the Unité d'Habitation in Marseille. The
success of this architecture lies in its grid dimensions which were decided
through careful studies of the surrounding environment and living spaces.
The architect, while respecting the human scale of alley and town houses,
made the minimum living spatial unit as a 2.7 cubic meter lattice with 350-
mm square beams and columns and stacked this unit in the order of three
by four horizontally and seven vertically(although appearing to be a seven-
story building, it is legally five, thus being required to have only one direct
stair). Dwelling units are fitted into this framework without stressing the
grid on the exterior, instead making it as-cast concrete using half standard-
size formwork panels with masonry construction-like staggered joints, while
the accidentally generated inconsistent texture responds well to the
townscape. Measures for insulation and to counter condensation are devised
for the interior, which reveals its presence as a structural body, while
avoiding a look of emptiness. This is an invigorating piece of architecture
based on rigorous yet hidden concepts and transparent rationale behind the
consideration given towards both its dwellers and the local community.

Change of the paradigm was a main theme, breaking a point of view of Return Of
Investment on each elemental technology, toward minimizing whole architectural
environment load with evaluating global environment. Environment systems utilizing
natural energy, architecture responding to the system, and structural design are realized
on process of design by paralleling various developments, experimentation and
verification.▲62% carbon is planned during the first year of operation. After that, by
promoting optimal control of the environment technologies, In 2015,▲70% carbon planned
and also realizing zero-carbon by carbon dioxide credits generated in emission rights
projects. Architecture on construction is always filled with enormous and vigorous energy.
It could be designed as inhering process of numberless builders, more acceptable various
values. Readable marks of integral techniques are decorations of this architecture. If
architecture was an object which works on the subconscious, in real still life, explanation
or what we see would come various meanings. By remaining in decades, the memories of
process will inherit as an aggregate.

This is an environment-oriented office building based on the concepts of
zero carbon emission, demonstration of the company’s construction
processes, and provision of a community-oriented office. Through the use of
innovative eco-technologies such as the task-specific and ambient radiative
system, energy offset lighting system, and the hybrid cladding system
combining solar and seismic panels, a drastic 70% reduction of CO2 was
achieved in the first year as opposed to the targeted 62%. The company
aims for zero emissions in the future by way of CO2 credit through Emission
Trading. The textures of building materials were employed as is for the
finishing of the building interior and exterior, for example, the as-cast
concrete using cedar formwork and the cast aluminum structure. Various
ingenuities are also evident in the workplace, where space design focused
on human communication. The building also provides facilities for stranded
commuters as a disaster prevention base, child-support as well as a new
subway entrance as part of its local contribution activities.

This is a house for a young couple and their daughter,
located in a mixed residential and farming area, one and half
hours by train from Tokyo. The site is surrounded by Kaki
(persimmon) fields. We created a house in which it feels as if
the room is connected to the bottom of the trees. Living in
this space makes you relate to the outside rather than the
inside. The house is sunken by 70 cm depth, but as it
surrounded by lawn on all four sides, you can see the sky
above the green. The interior is black so that the outside
appears to be closer. The structure is a conventional wood
structure.

There are quite a few residential plans which enable multiple compositions
through the use of large movable partitions to divide a space. Noteworthy in
this building is that such system is put to good use in daily living practice
with no sense of awkwardness. As the partitions serve not only to divide
the space, but also serve as doors giving access to storage and toilet, their
mobility is fully utilized without effort. Further, by keeping a large partition
door a little open for example, a living space is created that closely
corresponds to the time of day. Impressive is the fact that despite being
open on all four sides through the use of clear glass, the house secures a
peaceful ambience, while being seen from the outside is not disturbing. In
addition to the appropriate floor plan that responds to the surrounding
environment, the sunken floor level is effective. When sitting on a chair and
looking out, one may even have the illusion that the table extends to the
lawn. Although this is a building with an experimental nature, it has a
unique practical quality.

Jissen Gakuen is a coeducational integrated junior high and high school, and it is
located in residential area in Tokyo. It can be said that this newly plane Freedom
learning manor house is the place that is made and collected only the unfilled space
and room as a“ground”in terms of space and time, to the place filled by class
room as main“figures”of the school. The function expected here is a place of a
student’s self-teaching and at the same time a hall of leisure-time activities and it
can also receive neighboring residents etc. So the contents of activity them-self are
action of OFF, to the action of ON as school lessons. With careful treatment of view
and sunshine duration, the outer shell is formed in harmony with its circumstance
and the hall as an inner shell is placed on semi-basement of the outer shell. So a
gap space is produced in between outer and inner shell and the space for various
leisure-time activities is woven and piled up to the top floor in the space. Originally
the space for self-learning, differently from the lesson in the classroom, has been
attempted to be a place for students to find their own spaces, to spend their own
time and to naturally let them communicate each other.

This is a self-study and leisure activity center for a combined junior high
and high school located in a residential area. It houses multi-purpose halls on
the first basement level and ground floor, and classrooms, library, self-study
area on the second and third floors. Consideration for its neighborhood and
an open/spontaneous interior are realized through the ingenuity exercised
in its structure, design and facilities. Although the height of the roof is
restricted at the north end due to the setback-line limit regulation, complex
roof forms together with angled columns and beams, and void slabs
successfully comprise a beautiful outer shell. The interior consists of a space
with continuity achieved by a four-story atrium and tiered self-study area.
Bright green leaves of the trees in the adjacent park seen through the
windows of the multi-purpose hall, together with irregular openings under
the top lights create a sense of linkage with the exterior. Close attention and
calculation are given to building services, such as variance of the fire-proof
compartmentation under the whole building evacuation safety verification
method regulation through the use of top lights for smoke extraction, and
noise reduction of the outer units of the air-conditioning system. The way
that students were studying in the self-studying area represented the joy
and vitality of this space as a place of learning.

INTEGRATING THE OLD WITH THE NEW
Anything new will eventually get old. Therefore, instead of
expressing contrasts between the old and the new, this project
aims to integrate these two features by shading off their
boundaries, creating one spatial quality having to apply different
dimensions of materials, forms, orders, contexts and programs.
The renovation regenerates the building by changing the big
experimental room, which was once used as a blow-down type
hypersonic wind tunnel, the first one in Japan, into commemoration
hall for the 60th anniversary of IIS, and by adding entrance foyer,
covered with etched glass curtain wall and transom bar made out
of molded GRC(Glassfiber Reinforced Cement), in front of the hall.

Based on the concept to reflect the history of the institute and marking of
its anniversary, a new value has been created while using the structural
frame of the existing institute. By analyzing the spatial properties of the
existing building throughout, a new space has been recreated. The history
and marking of its anniversary are successfully rendered through an
expression that reduces the number of elements, reorganization of materials,
and additional lobby and multiple exterior power conduit towers, that
differentiate this from the surrounding buildings on the campus. The
textures of the exterior walls and louver are homogenized so closely that
the glass part of the louver almost appears as if it consists of cut out slits.
Inside the louver, the entrance is a monumental space with a view
restrained by the gradated intervals, and the indirect light cast into the
lobby, together with the light from the top lights of the hall. The hall
comprises a soft atmospheric space created by sculptured interior walls and
openings, providing an ideal venue for open symposiums and other meetings
with a high level of communication.

ランドスケープと一体化した建築 ※1
This project, set in a suburban area, was an office building for a life
insurance company, with requirement for high security and
concentration and relaxation of the workers. To meet this goal, we
have set a landscape throughout the site, which continuously links
the architecture with the surrounding environment, and to make
the landscape a workplace itself. This approach has succeeded in
minimizing the impact of the building, intruding itself into the site,
for neighboring houses, elementary school and dormitory.
Furthermore, utilization of the prevailing wind from Sagami bay as
an air conditioner, solar shading deep balcony and reduction of heat
load by trees, we have achieved“super-eco”office, halving CO2
emission compared to standard buildings.

Segmented terraces with greenery inserted in their intervals create a
fresh and impressive facade. This intriguing exterior represents the pursuit
for an ideal workplace as a part of living and an office that coexists with
greenery as its realization, in other words a provincial as opposed to urban
style. The design concept extends throughout in every detail of its
environment, structure, plan, section and landscape. Although the building
volume is enormous, a human-friendly and pleasant interior comfort has
been secured by segmenting and shifting such volume, and adding
handwork-like design details. Further, the stressed horizontal element
common to the former head office as well as the approach to coexist within
the community, manifest that the spirit of The Dai-ichi Life Insurance
Company, which has long been respected in this area, will be passed on and
continue to prosper. The architect’s intuition that when a building is in a
natural environment, it should be pared down as closely as possible to its
structural frame, greatly gained my sympathy, as this is a building of which
all the decorative or weak cosmetic elements often seen in urban buildings
are eliminated, and is in other words‘muscular’architecture.
