2. Executive Summary
Imgur is an image­sharing website which aims to give users the ability to easily upload,
share, and comment on images. Most images are humorous in nature and many users find
themselves on Imgur through other social networking sites. Imgur, like many similar sites, is
driven by participating users who make posts, comments, and contributions to site content. The
site began as hosting­only, and has evolved into a gallery­like collection of images that can be
browsed based on popularity, topic, and other filters.
Our team began research on Imgur through heuristic evaluation and cognitive
walkthroughs. Next, three personas were created using data gathered from interviews. These
personas gave the team insight into the target audience and key users of Imgur. Using all of the
findings up to that point, the team developed a plan to perform usability tests on Imgur.
The purpose of the testing performed by this team was to explore the usability and
functionality of key Imgur features. The sections in this document describe the process, findings,
and recommendations of the usability tests.
Procedure
For P4 of our usability testing, we brought in participants we recruited in order to perform
a set of tasks we created and observed them during this interaction. The first step in this
process was to generate a set of tasks and a script to use during each session. We created our
set of tasks based on an evaluation of the importance of each task. After we knew what tasks
we wanted our participants to perform, we created a script to use in order to present our tasks to
our participants as well as the questions we would ask during each session. In addition to the
script we created a consent form for the participant to sign which informs them of our intent and
their rights. Both of these can be found in the appendix of this report.
Prior to our actual tests, we ran a mock test in order to test the efficacy of our materials
and method. We used our script and materials as planned on a volunteer and made revisions to
them as necessary. A list of changes that we made to our script can also be found in the
appendix.
With our revisions complete, we brought in our participants and took turns moderating
and observing. All testing was performed on one day within the span of 2 hours. For each
session, after setting up Morae Recorder and Observer on their respective computers, we had
our moderator read the script and present our task list to the participant. While this was
happening, the rest of our team was observing and taking notes either on paper or on morae.
After each task was completed the participant answered some questions and proceeded to the
next task. When they completed all the tasks, we wrapped up each session with some follow
questions and information, thanked them, and then began setting up for the next participant.
Following the completion of all our sessions, we aggregated all our data in morae to see
any patterns that emerged. We then created recommendations based on the usability data we
gathered from this data.
Testing Environment and Recruitment
The participants arrived to the testing area on time and were ready to go. After the team
settled down in a room and figured out what code number was needed to connect the observer

3. to the recorder, the session began. The first participant was called and the rest sat down quietly
waiting for their turn. Halfway through the testing, the team realized that it would have been
better not to bring all the participants together in the room because other team member were
observing via the TV. Fortunately for us, the participants were on their own little gadgets and
were not paying attention to what was going on in the testing area that is being shown on the TV
screen. one after the other, the participants finished and left the testing room.
As for the recruitment, the team asked their friends who were at DePaul if they would be
able to come help out. Some of the participants were available on days that the room was not
scheduled for the team and they end up not coming to the user testing. The team worked with
what we got and it turned out that we had a participant for each of the user groups. The user
groups consisted of New User, Light User, Moderate User, and Expert User
Observations and Recommendations
All observations and recommendations will be presented task­by­task. The observations
were analyzed and place on the following scale:
● Positives: Findings that support or affirm the usability of a feature
● Minor: Small issues that do not require immediate attention
● Severe: Issues that are directly affecting usability and should be attended to
● Very Severe: Big issues that should be prioritized and fixed immediately
Task 1: Image Uploading
Objective: Can the user successfully upload an image onto Imgur?
Minor
● One user used upload icon located at the top of the page instead of the main upload
button located on the right side.
● One user uploaded the image twice.
Positives
● All users were able to successfully upload the image onto Imgur fairly quickly with few to
no errors.
Recommendations
● No immediate action required.
● If time and resources allow:
○ Improve the visibility of the upload button by increasing size and changing
location.
○ Improve feedback to let user know an image has already been selected for
upload.
In our first task, we asked our participants to upload a provided image onto Imgur. All of
our participants were able to complete this with ease. However, we did notice some areas that
could be improved upon. Throughout the whole upload process, there is very little feedback
given to the user to let him/her know where they are at in the process. We feel that including
some indicators such as sound alerts or visual queues would help reduce user error. Also, it

4. would help improve overall visibility of this feature if the upload button/section was made more
prominent.
Task 1: Recommendation Mock­Up
The layout of the original Upload screen is seen on the left of this image. Though all
users successfully navigated this screen, one user accidentally uploaded an image twice as the
listing of the image on the bottom was not immediately visible. Other users tended to move the
cursor around a bit before finding the actual “Start Upload” button.
The improved interface presented on the right is a simple reorganization of the layout.
The “Start Upload” button stands out against the other layout elements with the use of Imgur’s
signature green pop color. The status of images being uploaded is listed right at the top of the
window, and the alternative options for uploading more images are at the bottom, underneath
the main upload button.
Task 2: Image Deletion
Objective: Can the user successfully delete and image from Imgur?
Very Severe
● One user was unable to delete their image.
Severe
● One user tried to edit the image in order to delete it.
● One user tried using the “request deletion” link which is for other people requesting an
image to be taken down (ex: privacy or copyright).
Positives

Recommendations
● Immediate attention should be given to this feature.
○ 3 out of 5 users had trouble deleting their image.
● Add a deletion button to the site’s view after an image or meme has been uploaded.
For this task, we asked our participants to delete the image that they had just uploaded.
We feel that this feature is one that requires immediate action as it represents a big problem in
terms of usability. When given this task, 3 out of our 5 participants were unable to complete the
task as intended and 1 was not able to complete the task at all. We feel that the main problem
lies in the use of a deletion link instead of simply providing a button. During this task, we noticed
that our users had trouble or even failed to find the deletion link. They also tried to use features
such as editing or the “deletion request” link in order to delete the image. In our wrap­up
questions, many participants described this feature as “difficult to find”, and “annoying”. The
addition of a button or similar simplified solution should greatly improve the usability of this
feature.

On the previous page, the image shows the original look of the uploaded image layout.
The deletion link, which only appears once after uploading an image without an account, is seen
on the bottom of the right panel. Some users were completely unable to locate this link and
others assumed deletion would be included elsewhere on the page, like in the “Edit Image”
section. The image above is the improved layout based on our findings. The delete and edit
options are listed across the top along with the warning about image deletion only being
possible once.
Task 3: Image Searching
Objective: Can the user search for a specific theme or topic?
Minor
● All users looked for search bar at the top of the page before locating it at its current
location.
● Some users interacted with image gallery display settings before locating search bar.
Positives
● All users were able to quickly and successfully search topics of their choice with little to
no errors.
Recommendations
● No immediate action required.
● Consider moving search bar to the top of the page or in the header in order to improve
visibility.
● Also consider increasing its size to improve visibility.

7. Our third task asked the participants to search for a topic of their choosing. Like our first
task, the results of our observations of this feature showed little to no problems in terms of
usability. All participants succeeded in searching for a topic. We have included some
recommendations to help improve the visibility of this feature and bring its format more inline
with other websites.
Task 3: Recommendation Mock­Up
The top part of the image show the original index page. The search bar is not even
visible at this point and users are required to scroll down to find it. This led to many users
browsing the gallery after not finding the search bar immediately at the top.
The improved index page implements a search bar at the top right, which is fairly typical
for many modern websites. Additionally, the team felt the index page could be improved with
better visibility of the “Upload” button. The “Computer” and “Web” options have been removed,
as they can be accessed and used from the upload splash screen mentioned earlier in this
report.

8. Task 4: Account Creation and Commenting
Objective: After finding an image, can the user create an account and post a comment on it?
Very Severe
● 3 out of 5 users had trouble navigating back to their selected image
○ Two users tried clicking “Back” button which did not work until they click+held the
button and selected desired destination.
○ One user not able to navigate back to selected image after account creation.
■ Searched for a new picture to comment on.
Severe
● All users reported difficulty in reading captcha during account creation.
○ One user needed to refresh in order to properly enter in captcha verification
code.
● Some user slips when inputting an account/url name.
Positives
● All users able to successfully locate account creation.

Recommendations
● Immediate action should be taken to implement a native back button to aid in site
navigation.
○ Alternative: after account creation or log in is complete, take the user back to the
page they were just on.
● Strongly recommend using an alternative to captcha.
○ ex: Simple math or an image puzzle.
● Also, consider eliminating the account url from account creation.
○ cause of user error in account creation.
During this task, we ask participants to create an account and comment on the picture
they had just found when they searched for a term in the previous task. While our users had no
trouble commenting on their images and only a few slips and mistakes during account creation,
we found that , to our surprise, many had difficulty in navigating from account creation back to
the image they were just on. Two users tried to click the back button on their browser but found
that the button was disabled and had to be held down and a previous url had to be selected.
Most striking was that one user failed to navigate to the previous image he had selected and
had to find another image to comment on. Because of this, we recommend an immediate
change to the layout of the site with the addition of a back and possibly forward button to aid
user navigation on the site. An alternative to this would be to have the site return users to the
page they were on after account creation or login.
Also, during account creation, we noticed that all participants reported problems reading
the captcha validation images. One even refreshed the image in order to obtain a readable
validation code. We strongly recommend using an alternative to the current captcha validation
system. We recommend using a simple check box, puzzle, or math problem.

Task 5: Meme Creation and Content Sharing
Objective: Can users create a meme and then share it on their social network of choice?

● Consider separating quick search bar and placing at the top of the meme creation page
to improve visibility.
For our final task, we asked users to create a meme using Imgur and to share it on a
social network. While most were able to complete this task quickly and with little trouble, we had
one user fail in this task. One of our users was simply unable to find the meme creation button.
He tried searching for “cat in suit” in the search bar instead of navigating to the button. Instead
we asked him to simply try and share an image which he, and all other participants, was able to
do successfully. In order to make this feature more visible, we suggest that you increase the
size and differentiate the meme creation option from the rest of the site’s layout.
In addition, we noticed the potential to improve site usability. We saw that none of the
users used the search bar in meme creation to quickly look up the requested meme. We believe
that the feature is a powerful accelerator which can aid in site navigation and usability. In order
to accomplish this, making this feature more visible will allow it to be used more frequently. We
suggest you consider making this feature more prominent by changing its location and making
the search bar bigger.
Other Recommendations
● If resources and time permit, consider adding a tag cloud to aid in site navigation
These recommendations represent our own personal suggestions and suggestions
collected from participants. While not or urgent importance to the usability of the platform, we
believe that these recommendations can act as accelerators and improve efficiency and site
functionality.

Objective:
To determine whether or not users can successfully perform common tasks on Imgur
including: account creation, image sharing, image searching, commenting, and meme
creation.
Target Users:
Adults between the ages of 18­35 who frequently use a computer and internet connection for
entertainment purposes
Target Participants:
Adults at least 18 years of age who are experienced in computer and internet use.
Protocol:
The moderator will follow the following script while observers take notes on the separate

Introduction:

Appendix C​ ­ Our usability plan changed very little between our pilot plan and our final
plan used in our sessions. The only changes we made were to 1) combine tasks 5 and
6 into one 2) use morae to send surveys to the participants instead of asking them
questions 3) revised the consent form to inform the participants that our results would
be shared with our class for learning purposes and 4) minor wording changes in the
script and participant form.
