Get to Know about Career Confidence and How to Boost it
Keyword : career tips, success tips, career confidence
In having a good performance at your job and succeed in your career, it is not enough
just having enough skills and experiences. You also need a career confidence to keep your
career sustained and achieve your dream. According to Kevin Gaw from National
Association of Colleges and Employers, career confidence is not a self confidence nor a self
assurance of your capability to do the job. It is how you feel confidence that your job fits onto
your career path, match with your values and you also have a certainty that you will grow in
the position. Most people can feel it in the beginning of their job but as the time goes by, they
begin to lose confidence as they earn more experience and it affects more to women. An
infographic presented by Bain & Company about how American women and men have
aspiration and confidence towards reaching top management in their company, shows that
43% women aspire to reach the top and 27% have confidence about it. While 34% men have
this aspiration and 28% who feels confident. After more than 2 years of experience, this
number decreased to only 16% women who have the aspiration and 13% who feel confident
to reach it. But the number of men who aspire to reach the top remains the same although the
number who feels confidence about it decreased to 25%. After knowing this fact, we can
have a conclusion that having a career confidence, boosting it and maintaining it are needed
to make the most of our career and reach our dream.
Gaw stated that career confidence involves passion, purpose, and a realistic career
plan. Passion is that exciting internal energy that ignites our intellect, our emotions, and our
sense of purpose. While purpose is the meaningful goal to which you aspire, the goal that is
awakened when you experience passion. And career plan involves what, how, where, when to
reach every of your goal/target to fulfill your aspiration. By having these three elements, not
only you do know what you want and how to achieve it, but you also know the fundamental
reasons why you want to achieve it. Some of us probably already have the confidence in our
career and here are some tips for you to boost it
- Boost your knowledge on your job, your company and yourself
Knowledge leads to more confidence. Whether you explore all the information about
your company or teaming up with more experienced employee in your company as
long as you able to be a lifelong learner, you’ll keep going. To become a lifelong
learner involves learning from others by listening to ideas, suggestions, and feedback
without feeling intimidated.
Knowing yourself is also important to survive in your office. You need to know your
strength and weakness, so you always eager to do self improvement and be proud of
yourself at the time you reveal your strength, did a good work and being
acknowledged.
- Maintain your appearance and body language
Some people say that wearing nice and comfortable clothes can boost your mood and
build your confidence. As for body language, it is also important because 87%
language is nonverbal. Individual judgement happens in a blink of an eye based on
how you look. Smile and a good posture happen to be the most helpful in showing
confidence and attractive appearance. So dress well for the office, fix your posture,
show your smile and let yourself shine.
- Avoid over thinking
According to Wolfgang Career Coaching, thinking too much about yourself and being
over self-critical is the worst confidence-killer. Learn from a 4 year old, who boldly
behave and talk even though he’s wrong. It is okay to make mistake or lack in
something but don’t let your self-consciousness takes over. It will take a lot of energy
at the end of the day.
- Be a good delegator
In working with a team, you need to trust your team partner and ask for help
whenever you need it. By delegating certain task to the right person, you recognize
every person’s value and their talents. Being a good delegator will be one of the way
to prove your good leadership and boost your self-image and confidence
- Find a mentor to help you
Sally Martin, Associate Director at Robert Walters, a professional recruitment
consultancy company, expresses the importance of having a mentor at work. Support
from mentor who are senior at work can make difference in building your confidence.
Their experience and insight can give you a reliable, objective voice when making
decisions. They might also willing to help you and be the person you can rely on.
