2. I created a survey to establish primary data, through
multiple open and closed questions about target audience:
their age, gender. It also established how people access
music and ways I can distribute my video
3. GENDER
Out of the respondents of my survey, over 80% were women.
75% of all the respondents claimed they listen to the Indie genre (my
chosen genre); giving examples of artists and bands similar to my
chosen artist, e.g: George Ezra, Jamie T, Arctic Monkeys, Ed Sheeran
and Arcade Fire.
Overall, this displays that my video should be targeted at women.
By targeting the video to women, I believed the male lead would help
draw in attention. Furthermore I used a heterosexual couple in the
narrative, inspired by popular romantic comedy films, such as The
Holiday, that may be viewed as familiar and aspirational to many
4. AGE
Over 70% of the respondents were aged between 16 and 19.
Another 20% were aged in their 20s, which led me to complete my
target audience of women in their late teens and early 20s.
This target was my original presumption, so confirming this was
really helpful.
5. ACCESS MUSIC
SOCIAL MEDIA
70% of respondents claim
they use YouTube to
access music which
therefore means they are
regularly accessing music.
100% of respondents
answered that they use the
social networking site
Facebook. This answer
proved especially helpful
as it allowed to realise
which was the best method
to receive feedback from
my primary secondary
6. TARGET AUDIENCE
This survey was distributed over Facebook from which I received the
results I desired, therefore this told me that Facebook would be a
reliable way of distributing my product and receiving reliable audience
feedback
To gain a greater understanding of my target audience I researched
audience theories such as the hypodermic needle and the two-step
flow.
In order to appeal to my target audience, I included various
recognised codes and conventions. These codes and conventions were
added and developed through the response and confirmation from
audience feedback which helped build a strong product.
7. I received feedback from my
audiences at different stages of my
production.
One extremely important feedback
was for the clarity of my narrative.
I wanted to portray my narrative as
clearly as possible (the narrative
being a man reminiscing over his
relationship) and after presenting
my ideas for the narrative to an
audience, they responded with
using a certain video transition that
differentiates between reality and
the memory. Subsequently, I used
the transition ‘dip to white’.
When I finally finished my final cut
of my video, my feedback was
positive including comments saying
that my narrative made sense and
8. ANCILLARY
TASKS
Using Facebook for
audience feedback
means I can obtain an
initial response from my
primary audience.
All the feedback I
received was very
helpful. It allowed me to
make difficult decisions
in developing my
production by giving the
audience an ultimatum.
It also gave me the
chance to see if the
audience interpreted my
product in the way I
aimed.
9. I received audience feedback at various stages of my
production to see how I could change and improve my music
video before I progressed onto the next cut. Some of the
comments celebrated my use of camera angles, as well as
suggesting ways to make my narrative clearer (including
using particular video transitions). I was told that I had simple
yet interesting colours and lighting which helped enhance the
narrative, and an effective opening sequence, and
used titles well. However, I also looked to the constructive
comments of my use of some repetitive and lower shaky
shots, sometimes uninteresting shots and my need
to cut certain clips, as I could improve these factors. I was
pleased with the feedback I received for these stages of
editing, as although some were of a negative nature, these
were to be expected and I knew there were aspects that I
could then improve.
