3. Definition
It is a rare chest malformation by a
protrusion of sternum and ribs
When the chest wall develop the
cartilage that connect the ribs usually
grows flat the chest
The cartilage grow abnormally causing
unequal growth in area where rib
connect to sternum
It develop during childhood and get more
as children go through puberty

4. Symptoms
• Shortness of breath
• Tenderness
• Pain in area of abnormal
cartilage growth
• Frequent respiratory infection
• Asthma
• Tiredness
• Chest pain
• Rapid heart rate
Causes
• Genetic
• Abnormal development of
cartilage
• Marfan syndrome
• Noonan syndrome
• Chromosomal abnormalities

5. Types :
There are two types :
• 1] Chondrogladiolar Prominence :
- Called as chicken breast
- Middle and lower section of breastbone push forward
• 2] Chrondromanubrial Prominence :
- Called pouter pigeon breast
- Breast bone develop in Z –shape
- Top section pushing forward

Chest x-ray

7. Treatment :
• 1) BRACING :
- Orthotic brace can be used
- It involve custom fitted brace that fit on outside
of chest
- Wear at least 8 hrs a day till puberty
• 2) SURGERY :
- When chest brace is ineffective or passed puberty
- Ravitch procedure is done that involve removing the abnormal
cartilage and placing the breastbone in normal position
