          WHOSE
The “whose” clause talks something
   that belongs to the noun that
          clause modfies.
1. Main sentence: Pierre Omidyar is
          a creative person.
 Then, I talk about something that
   belongs to Pierre Omidyar—his
                 idea.
Embedded sentence: His idea made
      him a very wealthy man.
Pierre Omidyar is a creative person
   whose idea made him a very
          wealthy man.
2. My friend has a sister.
Now, I’m talking that belongs to the
       sister—her daughter
Embedded sentence: Her daughter
  is studying to be a computer
           programmer.
2. My friend has a sister whose
  daughter is studying to be a
    computer programmer.
3. Main sentence: The teacher uses
      a computer in the class.
 I’m talking about something that
  belongs to the teacher– a class.
Embedded sentence: I’m taking her
               class.
3. The teacher whose class I’m taking
          uses a computer.

  Now, the word class is “redundant”
(saying the same thing two times), so I
            can take it out.

 Remember that an adjective clause
  follows the noun that it modifies.
4. Main sentence: Freecycle is an online
              community.
Something belongs to the organization:
              --members.
   Embedded sentence: The members
   help each other get the things they
                 need.

whose members help each other get
       the things they need.
5. Main sentence: Freecycle is an
          organization.
    Something belongs to the
     organization— a goal.
Embedded sentence: Its goal is to
 protect the environment from
      unnecessary landfill.

  whose goal is to protect the
environment from unnecessary
             landfill.
6. Main sentence: The person just
    bought a new flat-screen TV,
Something belongs to the person —
              old TV
Embedded sentence: I received her
              old TV.
6. Person whose old TV I received
just bought a new flat-screen TV.

   The people whose car I bought
   wanted to sell it in a hurry, so it
             was cheap.
     Who bought the car? I did
    Who sold the car? The people
 I bought a car. The car belonged to
the people. They wanted to sell it in
       hurry, so it was cheap.

 My friend’s car was hit by a wheel
  that fell off a car on tow truck on
              the freeway.
     Who pays for her new car?
The insurance company whose tow
truck was carrying the wheel has to
         pay for her new car.
7. Main sentence: I give my clothes
           to a woman.
 Something belongs to the woman
              — son.
  Embedded sentence: Her son is
       smaller than my son.
7. I give my son’s clothes to a
woman whose son is smaller than
             my son.
