Where, When, That or Which in
     Adjective Clauses
Use where or when as
  relative pronouns
 when the embedded
 sentence contains a
     preposition:
Main sentence: In 2002,
Pierre gave the graduation
  speech at the college.
 Embedded sentence: He
had gotten his degree from
        the college.
In 2002, Pierre gave the
graduation speech at the
college where he had
  gotten his degree,
           or
 from which he had
  gotten his degree.
WHERE = FROM WHICH
You can also say:
 In 2002, Pierre gave the
 graduation speech at the
college (that/which) he had
  gotten his degree from.

 (This is more informal.)
Main sentence: 1995 is
      the year.
 Embedded sentence:
eBay got its start in that
         year.
1995 is the year when
  eBay got its start,
            or
in which eBay got its
          start.
WHEN = IN WHICH
You can also say:
    1995 is the year
(that/which) eBay got
       started in.
 (This is more informal.)
Main sentence: She lives in
          a home.
   Embedded sentence:
People use the computer a
lot in that home (= People
  use the computer a lot
           there .)
She lives in a home where
people use the computer a
             lot,
              or
  She lives in a home in
  which people use the
       computer a lot.
WHERE = IN WHICH
Main sentence: February
       is the month.
 Embedded sentence: I
was born in that month
  (= I was born then .)
February is the month
   when I was born,
           or
February is the month in
  which I was born.
WHEN= IN WHICH
Main sentence: Yemen is the country.
  Embedded sentence: I am from
              Yemen

Yemen is the country that I am from.
Main sentence: Yemen is the
           country.
Embedded sentence: I was born
          in Yemen

Yemen is the country where I was
              born.
