MEDIA STUDIES: QUESTION FOUR
1. Question Four: Who would be the audience for your media product?
MEDIA STUDIES: THRILLER OPENING EVALUATION
2. Audience Profile
Age: 15-21 (teen). Why? Teenagers relate an emphasis with characters of their age. As the focus of my thriller is of the journey
of a teenager, teens are most likely to be interested and emphasis with this character. Teens are also the most likely to be the
audience of a thriller, especially action based thrillers that attract the mainstream audience whom are old enough to handle
the violent aspect. Psychological thrillers such as The Usual Suspect (1995), Memento (2000) and Mindscape (2013) are aimed
at a more intellectual audience at the range of 17 and above. The combination of these themes in my thriller, with fast passed
action but also a psychological undertone integral to the plot, allowed my to estimate the target audience at young adults.
Gender: Female (primarily). Why? Although the thriller audience is often dominated my males due to inherent themes of
violence and action which seem to be popular among men, I would however suggest my thriller focuses more towards a
female audience. This is because my thriller, although contains, does not rely heavily on action as a plot focus but rather the
character suffering of the main character who is indeed female. The exploration deep into this character and the nature of her
suffering creates a relationship with the character that may only fully be achieve through the level of empathy a fellow female
can poses. A male audience is also statistically less likely to view a film with a female lead.
Ethnicity: Caucasian. Why? Although my thriller does not hold any restrictions to minority's, my thriller distinctly lacks this
representation. However, films such as Eden used a mix of ethnicity's to represent the closer of preconceptions in a time of
deprivation and deprivation in which these girls are in, therefore there is certainly room to develop this theme in my thriller
and is something it may go on to do.
Media interests: Mainstream/Big budget indies. Why? Thrillers are often a mainstream affair as indies focus on drama as a
genre. Thrillers are often straightforward easy watches which gears them towards a mainstream audience as often, most
people can follow and engage with their plot. The psychological thrillers, however, can be very obscure and often produced by
indie companies on a smaller budget. These are enjoyed by the fewer and are often a little harder to follow. My thriller isn’t as
obscure as something like In The House (2012) which attracts an arthouse audience, therefore my thriller is aimed at an
intellectual mainstream audience.
