What have I learned from my audience feedback?
In order to assess how effective my production was at meeting my objectives, I went about creating a questionnaire in which I would ask questions in order
to gather the information needed to assess how the audience took in my productions and whether I had met these goals. I first comprised the questions in
a Word Document format which I intended to give to a group of my peers in which they could fill out after a screening process. I decided on this method as
I would be able to collect the right amount of data all at once, saving time and making it easier to control the circumstances. However, this process was
unsuccessful as I felt that I would get more coherent and intellectual responses if the participants were able to fill out the questionnaire in an environment
where they had more time and could watch the video repeatedly when needed. Therefore, I decided to convert my questions into a Google Forms format
which is an online survey sharing platform. This way I could send the questionnaire to the group of participants to fill out at their leisure. This process was
less controlled as I received responses during a larger time period and was never sure on how many I would get due to having to rely on participants
following the link themselves. However, I had the desired responses which did prove to be digested and interpreted to a significantly better standard which
then helped to analysis the finding affectively. Google Forms also helped when analysing the findings by collecting the data in pie charts and tables which
were easily interpreted and gave me the answers I needed in a clear manner.
I sent out my survey to a group of fellow students which closely fit the audience identified in my profile, young male music fans. I also included female and
one younger member as a control to compare to the findings of my target audience and see whether my pieces would attract other audiences.
I decided on the questions for my survey by selecting sections of data I wished to collect in order to assess the outcome of my production. The first section I
wished to identify was the demographic. Included age to identify the participants of my desired target audience, also asking for examples of their three
favourite bands to further identify whether the participant was a member of my target audience as I could compare these artists to the genre of my own.
This also allowed me to understand the other answers of the participant as they are less likely to be interested throughout if they so not enjoy the genre I
had used.
The next section I asked about was to identify how affective I was at engaging the audience. I asked this through ‘Who do you identify with most?’ and
‘Why?’ I asked the participants to explain why in order to see whether my use of a male lead to attract the desired audience was successful. I also asked
whether the audiences ability to identify with the main character had changed at any time throughout the video as the relationship breakdown creates a
turning point in which the audience may side with one character or the other. This allows me to assess how well I was able to manipulate my target
audience through the narrative of my video. I then went on to also ask if the participants were able to identify the target audience of my video and print
productions in order to round up my ability to use identifying factors such as motifs to target a specific audience and connote to a certain genre.
I also asked whether the they could identify that the ‘print productions and video were from the same artist’ and if a ’brand’ was created throughout my
different productions. I was therefore able to gauge whether I was successful in meeting one of my aims and also one of Andrew Goodwin’s conventions of
a music video, by creating a marketable brand.
I asked participants who they identify most with in order to assess how well I was able to target my desired audience through the use of a male protagonist.
I found that more than half of the participants said they identified most with the male protagonist with many sighting the reason as they were themselves
male, making it easier to relate to the character. I then asked whether this had changed at all throughout the video and the 23% that said yes stated that
this was due to the female dominating more of the screen time during the end of the video. This suggests that I was able to focus on my main target
audience whilst still including the opportunity for a wider audience viewership which would relate more to a female character. Louis Althusser would
suggest that this is due to ‘individuals feel[ing] that a text or a cultural event ‘calls’ to them’ which I aimed to do using techniques that entice a particular
audience, such as using a male protagonist.
I then went on to ask whether the video kept them interested throughout and they could follow the story. To this most answered yes which suggests my
narrative choices was affective in engaging and interesting the audience. I also ask whether they thought that the video suited the genre of the song in
order to evaluate how well I had formed an idea around genre as Andrew Goodwin suggests ‘music videos demonstrate genre characteristics’. To this, all
participants marked yes which suggests I have upheld this feature of music videos and created a production which will appeal to this audience.
I also asked participants whether they could relate to the storyline in which one person relied ‘Because they're of my age and relationships are a prominent
focus within my age group’ which highlights my focus on the use of ‘stereotyping as shorthand for identification’ (Andy Medhurst) in which I used a
relationship, a common ideal for young people, in order to help my desired target audience to relate to the storyline.
When asked what parts of my video were most memorable one participant answered with ‘the use of quick cuts to the beat’ which suggests that my use of
typical music video characteristics when creating the ‘link between music and visuals’ (Andrew Goodwin) was affective in enticing the target audience.
In order to round off how affective I was at targeting my audience of young adults I asked participants to suggest the target audience for the video. All of
which agreed by saying that the intended audience was indeed young people. Therefore, due to the ability for young people themselves to agree that they
are the target audience suggests I was successful.
I later went on to ask whether the participants could ‘you tell the print productions and video were from the same artist?’ in which 80% agreed. Some
stated the reason being as they ‘fit the genre’ which is evident in my research and planning of digipaks from the genre and taking influence in style and
execution. Others pointed out that the drums were a focal point of both productions which meets my aim to ‘develop a motif which reoccur across [my]
work’ (Andrew Goodwin).
The next question I asked was ‘Would you be attracted to the print productions? Why? What aspects are most memorable?’ of which all the participants
said yes due to the vibrant and eye-catching colours. Evident of my success in creating a marketable brand in which will entice and relate to my audience.
Also highlighted when asked is a ‘brand’ was created in which many noted the use of reoccurring colours and images in which I ‘developed a motif which
reoccurs across [my] work’ (Andrew Goodwin).
