Executive Employment Trends Report Q1 2018
Executive Hiring Benefiting from Strong Economy
©2017 BPI group – Confidential
At the end of last year, executive hiring was poised for a strong start in 2018 with predictions for continued low
unemployment and an overall projection of 20.5 million new jobs by 2020.* Economic indicators remain strong as the
new year unfolds, with particular growth expected in healthcare, technology, green energy, and construction.**
Interestingly, we are seeing growth in strategic management, HR, and manufacturing jobs compared to last year.
The labor pool continues to skew older, with a multi-generational workforce now the norm in most organizations.
Overall, the demand for skilled workers continues unabated.
BPI group’s Executive Advisory Services clients landed new roles in an average of only 4.9 months in Q4—significantly
faster than the national average executive job search length of 5.8 months. We also noticed that senior executive
salaries are trending lower, with a 14% decrease in those earning $150,000 and up, compared to the same period a
year ago. However, a full 72% reported landing salaries that were equal to or better than their previous position. Our
executive clients with a base salary greater than $250k landed new roles in an average of just 5.3 months this
quarter—reflecting continued strong demand for senior executive talent. As the war for talent persists, our executive
clients work with us to explore their options, determine the right next step, and land with a competitive
compensation package and solid prospects for long-term success.
Steve Spires
Managing Director, Career Services
BPI group
Many of our executive clients choose to start their own businesses (16% this past
quarter), reflecting their confidence in the economy and their ability to translate their
experience and expertise into a new venture. We continually see a greater number of
older executives exploring nontraditional roles or transitioning to nonprofit, board, or
part-time work. BPI group’s Career Transition consultants are highly experienced at
helping our clients navigate these decisions and advance confidently to the next phase
of their careers and lives.

  • 3. Executive Hiring Benefiting from Strong Economy ©2017 BPI group – Confidential At the end of last year, executive hiring was poised for a strong start in 2018 with predictions for continued low unemployment and an overall projection of 20.5 million new jobs by 2020.* Economic indicators remain strong as the new year unfolds, with particular growth expected in healthcare, technology, green energy, and construction.** Interestingly, we are seeing growth in strategic management, HR, and manufacturing jobs compared to last year. The labor pool continues to skew older, with a multi-generational workforce now the norm in most organizations. Overall, the demand for skilled workers continues unabated. BPI group’s Executive Advisory Services clients landed new roles in an average of only 4.9 months in Q4—significantly faster than the national average executive job search length of 5.8 months. We also noticed that senior executive salaries are trending lower, with a 14% decrease in those earning $150,000 and up, compared to the same period a year ago. However, a full 72% reported landing salaries that were equal to or better than their previous position. Our executive clients with a base salary greater than $250k landed new roles in an average of just 5.3 months this quarter—reflecting continued strong demand for senior executive talent. As the war for talent persists, our executive clients work with us to explore their options, determine the right next step, and land with a competitive compensation package and solid prospects for long-term success. Steve Spires Managing Director, Career Services BPI group Many of our executive clients choose to start their own businesses (16% this past quarter), reflecting their confidence in the economy and their ability to translate their experience and expertise into a new venture. We continually see a greater number of older executives exploring nontraditional roles or transitioning to nonprofit, board, or part-time work. BPI group’s Career Transition consultants are highly experienced at helping our clients navigate these decisions and advance confidently to the next phase of their careers and lives.
