BLACK PEARL

INTRODUCTION

Aye, aye captain……
Across the unpredictable channels of stormy water lies a map to glory, evading
the treacherous expanse of water is the foundation of youth, so gear up for the
ultimate voyage as the battle of seas rages on…..
A motor boat designing and racing challenge in which a mechanical boat has to
complete water track in minimum time.
The fast and furious boat race BLACK PEARL is back. It is time to plunge your
boats into the water of this extravagant event.

TASK

Manoeuvre your machine through testing arenas. Navigate the machine by
avoiding and passing through various obstacles in minimum possible time and
emerge as the winner.
The objective of the game is to cross a section of water arena. It comprises of 2
rounds.
Round 1 – Elimination round
Round 2 – Final round

SETUP

1. The entire arena will be setup outdoors in ambient lighting conditions.
2. The explanation of the arena is given later in this document.

ROBOT SPECIFICATIONS

The robot’s dimensions must adhere to the following constraints:
  I. Maximum width = 30cm
 II. Maximum length = 30cm
III. Maximum height = 15cm
IV. Maximum weight = 4 kg
NOTE: For the teams with wired boats, the length of the wire must be long
enough according to measurements of the pool i.e. minimum length of 200
inches is required.

         a. The robot must adhere to these dimensions in its most compact
form. Once the robot has cleared the specifications test it may
expand to any size or configuration on the track provided that
such reconfiguration is done automatically and it does not damage
the track or violate any other contest rule.

         b. The robot may only be powered by the following, either singly or
in any combination: Batteries, photovoltaic cells or fuel cells. The
maximum power supply allowed is 12V, DC.

         c. The power system, or systems, for the robot must be self-contained
and entirely on-board the robot. Attachments, if powered, may
contain their own power source or may be powered from the robot.
Power systems must be safe and non-toxic. Robots may not be
attached to a power source separate from the machine.

         d. The robot should not break any obstacle in path.

         e. The robot shall not leave anything behind while moving on the
            track.

         f. The remote control systems being used to control the robot may be
wireless as well as wired and if wired then the length of the wire
must be long enough according to the size of arena. More details
will be given in the track map.

         g. Lego kits/parts are not allowed.

         h. Organisers' decision shall be treated as final and binding on all.

         i. The organisers reserve the right to change any or all of the above
rules as they deem fit. Change in rules, if any, will be highlighted
on the website and notified to the registered teams
Arena
The TRACK may contain the following obstacles –
Outer Circle Obstacles:-
         1) Icebergs – thermocol pieces floating in random motion.
         2) Crazy River – alternate left and right flow of water perpendicular
to the direction of motion of boat.
         3) Longest Shortcut – 2 or 3 alternate paths. Participant will have to
             choose one
         4) Hit and Run – Hit the obstacle to rotate it to make your way.
Similar to the entrance of park or malls etc.
         5) Wreckage – Wooden pieces floating in a particular area of track.
         6) Need For Speed – Flow of water along with the direction of path
giving extra speed just before a turn.
         7) Tsunami – Area of high tide.
         8) Niagara Falls – Waterfall to check the 100% waterproofness of
             boat.
Changes can be made in track later.

NOTE: Round 2 obstacles will be revealed later.

The image of arena is shown below
 The exact dimensions of the track will be revealed later.
 The track is subject to change.

:- The map provided below is the top view of the expected Arena ,consisting of
a rectangle boundary enclosed in a circular boundary. Outer circular track is for
round 1 only. For round 2 participant will have to go through the round 1 track
also then it would be allowed to enter the boundaries of round 2.Round 2
obstacles will be revealed later.

Important Measurements:
     1) Radius of Circle = 150 inches
     2) Minimum width of track of round 1 = 150 – 132 = 18 inches

NOTE: Different regions in the map stand for the respective area of
      obstacles.
First phase: Prelims
   a. The time taken by the robots completing the run successfully will be
      recorded.
   b. The track will be divided in further areas and if a team is not able to pass
a particular area it can skip it facing a time penalty.
   c. Top teams will be selected based on the results of the prelims. The
selected teams would be eligible to participate in the second phase of the
      contest.

Second phase: Mains
  i. In this phase, all the teams will be required to complete a full run of the
       track.
ii. The Mains will be divided in further areas too and if a team is not able to
pass a particular area it can skip it facing a time penalty.
iii. The time taken by the robots completing the run successfully will be
       recorded.
iv. The team completing the track in minimum time will be declared as the
       winner.

CONTEST RULES
 A team may consist of not more than 3 people.
 The contest officials shall reserve the right to stop a run, or disqualify a
robot, if they believe its continued operation is endangering the condition
     of the track.
 The time of the run is measured from the time the robot is first activated.
The robot does not have to move when it is first activated but it must be
positioned in the starting line ready to run.
 The time taken shall be measured manually by the contest officials.
    PENALTY RULES
         a. Skip Penalty – If a team is not able to pass a particular region of
the track then it can skip that region facing the skip penalty.
         b. Retry Penalty – if a team got stuck at any position of track then the
can place their bot at the starting of that region facing the retry
            penalty.
         c. Repair Penalty – if a team thinks their bot is not working as
required then they can make some changes in their bot facing
repair penalty but then they will have to restart from starting
position. Record time will be reinitialized to 0 and repair penalty
time multiplied by the number of restarts used, will be added to it
            in last.
At max 3 restarts are allowed else the team will be disqualified.
NOTE: Retry penalty will be smaller than the Skip penalty.

 The judges reserve the right to ask the operator for an explanation of the
robot. The judges also reserve the right to stop a run, declare
disqualification, or give instructions as appropriate (e.g., if the structure
of the track is jeopardized by continuing operation of the robot).
 Any violation of the rules will constitute immediate disqualification from
the contest and ineligibility for the associated prizes.
 Each robot system must pass a technical inspection to determine its
compliance with the rules before it is permitted to compete in the
Challenge. Each team is responsible for providing the organizers with
sufficient documentation to establish the operational safety of their robot.
Teams that cannot provide proper documentation will be ineligible to
     compete.
 The design of the robot must be such that it is capable of accomplishing
all of the Challenges in the competition. Specifically, the design must not
preclude the robot from attempting any of the challenges.

Contest Registration
All teams who are interested in participating must register online by visiting the
site www.nsit-innovision.in and fill the registration form which is available on
the site and facebook event page of BLACK PEARL.A team number will be
automatically assigned to each team when the team completes online
registration.

Arena The TRACK may contain the following obstacles – Outer Circle Obstacles:- 1) Icebergs – thermocol pieces floating in random motion. 2) Crazy River – alternate left and right flow of water perpendicular to the direction of motion of boat. 3) Longest Shortcut – 2 or 3 alternate paths.
