DEMONSTRATION LESSON PLAN
Teacher: Ms. Anjenette E. Columnas Grade & Section: Grade 9 - Molave
School: Sicayab National High School Date: November 14, 2018
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students can:
a. define a gerund or gerund phrase
b. identify the different uses of gerunds or gerund phrases
c. locate the gerunds or gerund phrases in a sentence

Instructional Materials:
 powerpoint presentation
 pictures and manila papers
Value Focus: To know the different uses of gerunds or gerund phrases.
III. Procedure
A. Preparation
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of Attendance
B. Motivation
The teacher calls five (5) students to volunteer for the activity. They are
asked to pick any numbers from one to six one at a time. Each number has
corresponding words.
Student will act the chosen word then the rest of the class will guess the student’s
action that ends in –ing.
Actions to be performed by the students:
1. planting
2. dancing
3. singing
4. writing
5. reading
Directions: Pick a number from one to six and act out the chosen word that is
written on the card. Then, let your classmates guess what you are doing. After
guessing the action, use the chosen word in a sentence and underline it.
C. Presentation of the Topic
People engage in different activities to entertain themselves and to get involve in
the community. Those actions that your classmates acted out can be an example
of community engagement or entertainment.
Questions to follow-up:
 What do you notice about the underlined words?
 What do you call a word that is derived from a verb?
 What name do we give to a verbal ending in –ing?
Our topic for today is all about gerunds and its uses.
D. Discussion
The teacher introduces the topic to the learners by using the powerpoint
presentation as a guide for the lesson proper.
GERUNDS
 The teacher calls a learner to define what is a gerund
 The teacher makes a brief explanation in regards of the topic
 Guide learners based on their copies about the lesson
Examples of the different uses of gerunds:

 Uses of gerunds are the following:
 Subject
 Direct Object
 Subjective Complement
 Object of a Preposition
Gerunds are verbal forms ending in -ing that functions as a noun.
Like an ordinary single-word noun, a gerund may be used as a:
1. SUBJECT
2. DIRECT OBJECT
3. SUBJECTIVE COMPLEMENT
4. OBJECT OF A PREPOSITION
E. Generalization
 What is a gerund? Can you also give out the different uses of gerunds?
A gerund is a verb form ending in –ing and used as a noun.
Like an ordinary single-word noun, it may be used as a:
 Subject
 Direct Object
 Subjective Complement
 Object of a Preposition
 How important is the use of gerunds in constructing sentences?
 Students answer may vary.
F. Application
Group Activity: The learners are divided into three groups via count-off. The
teacher hands out the pictures of a family doing different recreational activities.
 Group 1 – Mr. and Mrs. Cruz
The students are to construct sentences using gerunds based on the picture and
they are going to put a tune to the sentence like a song.
 Group 2 – Franz and Erlie
The students are to construct sentences using gerunds based on the picture and
they are going to act out what the characters are doing.
 Group 3 – Lolo Genie and Lola Emy
The students are to construct sentences using gerunds based on the picture and
they are going to present a dance routine on what the characters are doing.
G. Evaluation
Direction: The teacher hand out a worksheet for the students to answer. (1 PT)
I. Complete each sentence with a gerund formed from the word before the sentence.
(teach) 1) It is often said that ________ is the noblest profession.
(dive) 2) Leo loves ________ into deep pools.
(drink) 3) ________ eight to ten glasses of water is a healthy habit.
(smoke) 4) Most men’s hobby is ________.
(attend) 5) ________ flag ceremony every day shows love for one’s country.
II. Underline the gerund or gerund phrase in the sentences and give its uses. (2 PTS)
6. Crying is a kind of therapy.
7. He needs little exercising.
8. Her plan is going abroad someday.
9. Vegetable raising is profitable.
10. Washing our clothes is my problem.
16-20. How important is the use of gerunds in constructing sentences? (5 PTS)
IV. Assignment
Change these words into gerunds then use them in meaningful sentences.

Objectives At the end of the lesson the students can: a. define a gerund or gerund phrase b. identify the different uses of gerunds or gerund phrases c. locate the gerunds or gerund phrases in a sentence Learning Competencies: EN9G-IIIb-21: Use verbals. II. Subject Matter Topic: Gerunds Reference: A Journey Through Anglo-American Literature English 9 (pp. 255) E-Reference: Effective Drills in English Grammar by Teresita R. Briones http://www.towson.edu/ows/verbals.html#Gerunds Instructional Materials:  powerpoint presentation  pictures and manila papers Value Focus: To know the different uses of gerunds or gerund phrases. III. Procedure A. Preparation 1. Prayer 2. Greetings 3. Checking of Attendance B. Motivation The teacher calls five (5) students to volunteer for the activity. They are asked to pick any numbers from one to six one at a time. Each number has corresponding words. Student will act the chosen word then the rest of the class will guess the student’s action that ends in –ing. Actions to be performed by the students: 1. planting 2. dancing 3. singing 4. writing 5. reading
  • 2. Directions: Pick a number from one to six and act out the chosen word that is written on the card. Then, let your classmates guess what you are doing. After guessing the action, use the chosen word in a sentence and underline it. C. Presentation of the Topic People engage in different activities to entertain themselves and to get involve in the community. Those actions that your classmates acted out can be an example of community engagement or entertainment. Questions to follow-up:  What do you notice about the underlined words?  What do you call a word that is derived from a verb?  What name do we give to a verbal ending in –ing? Our topic for today is all about gerunds and its uses. D. Discussion The teacher introduces the topic to the learners by using the powerpoint presentation as a guide for the lesson proper. GERUNDS  The teacher calls a learner to define what is a gerund  The teacher makes a brief explanation in regards of the topic  Guide learners based on their copies about the lesson Examples of the different uses of gerunds:  Guide learners based on their copies about the lesson  Uses of gerunds are the following:  Subject  Direct Object  Subjective Complement  Object of a Preposition Gerunds are verbal forms ending in -ing that functions as a noun. Like an ordinary single-word noun, a gerund may be used as a: 1. SUBJECT 2. DIRECT OBJECT
  • 3. 3. SUBJECTIVE COMPLEMENT 4. OBJECT OF A PREPOSITION E. Generalization  What is a gerund? Can you also give out the different uses of gerunds? A gerund is a verb form ending in –ing and used as a noun. Like an ordinary single-word noun, it may be used as a:  Subject  Direct Object  Subjective Complement  Object of a Preposition  How important is the use of gerunds in constructing sentences?  Students answer may vary. F. Application Group Activity: The learners are divided into three groups via count-off. The teacher hands out the pictures of a family doing different recreational activities.
  • 4.  Group 1 – Mr. and Mrs. Cruz The students are to construct sentences using gerunds based on the picture and they are going to put a tune to the sentence like a song.  Group 2 – Franz and Erlie The students are to construct sentences using gerunds based on the picture and they are going to act out what the characters are doing.  Group 3 – Lolo Genie and Lola Emy The students are to construct sentences using gerunds based on the picture and they are going to present a dance routine on what the characters are doing. G. Evaluation Direction: The teacher hand out a worksheet for the students to answer. (1 PT) I. Complete each sentence with a gerund formed from the word before the sentence.
