This document summarizes two Ayurvedic herbal formulations - Gokshuradi Guggulu and Panchathikthaka Guggulu.
Gokshuradi Guggulu contains nine ingredients used to treat disorders of the male reproductive and urinary systems. It has diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and aphrodisiac properties. Panchathikthaka Guggulu contains guggulu and five bitter herbs used to treat bone, joint, and skin diseases by reducing inflammation and toxicity. Both formulations are used according to Ayurvedic dosha theory and have been studied for treating conditions like nephropathy, urinary stones, and osteoarthritis.
3. Introduction
• Gokshuradi Guggulu is an Ayurvedic multi herbal formulation, consisting of nine
ingredients which is used in the treatment of several disorders in male reproductive
system and urinary system of both males and females
• In reproductive field, it is used in the treatment of spermatorrhoea, nocturnal
eneuresis,premature ejaculation and loss of sexual desire
• Among urinary disorders it is recommended for nephritis, albuminuria, urinary
infections, cystitis, and bladder stones etc.
• It is also recommended by Ayurvedic, traditional and folkloric medicine to be used
as a diuretic.

6. Preparation
• 28 pala of Gokshura is boiled in six times of water and reduced to half.
Seven palas of Guggulu are added and when the mass becomes solid,
powders of triphala, Trikatu and musta (seven palas in total )are added
and rolled into pills.
10. Indications:
Urine: A traditional tonic for the genito-urinary tract. Indicated in infections; cystitis,
nephritis, incontinence with burning sensation ,frequency, cloudy urine, albuminuria,
excessive or obstructed urination.( Vatapitta predominance).
Used to prevent and reduce stones caused by kapha Dosa mainly.
Reproductive: Specific application in male sexual dysfunction; premature ejaculation,
spermatorrhoea. Used for prostatitis and Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy. Also used in
female disorders such as lucorrhoea,endometriosis and infertility.
Back pain: Lower back problems, lumbago and kidney disorders.

• Vatakapha hara property helps in the samprapti Vighatana of Mootrasmari,
kricchra and Prameha.

• Studies on Gokshura has proved its Ant cancerous, Nephroprotective,
Hepatoprotective, lithotriptic and diuretic activity.
• Also studies on Guggulu has proved its effect in obesity, atherosclerotic lesions,
inflammations, arthritis, hypercholestrolemia etc.
16. PANCHATIKATAKA GUGGULU
• Guggulu thikthakam Ghrita is vataghna and it is being used for treatment of asthi
majja Kshaya .
• The drug is mentioned in AH and Bhaishajya Ratnavali in the management of bones
and associated disorders.
20. Preparation
• Guggulu is purified by Dola Yantra Swedana in Triphala kwatha.
• Decoction is prepared by adding prescribed quantity of Nimbu, Patola, Guduchi,
Vasaka, and Kantakari by adding 8 times of water and reduced to one fourth.
• Sudha Guggulu is taken in an iron pan with prescribed quantity of Ghrita and
Kashaya.
• The mixture is heated and simmered until it becomes thick Avaleha consistency.
• After that other powdered ingredients were added and mixed well to obtain a
homogenous mixture.
21. • After that pills of 3g size were prepared by rolling.
• The prepared tablets were properly dried and stored in air tight containers.
23. Pharmacologycal actions
• Ingredients in panchathikta ghrita guggulu act on bone
joints,muscles,skin,lymph glands,spine,intestine,nerves,bone marrow etc
• Therefore, it is useful in diseases related to these organs
• Mainly it is anti-inflammatory ,anti-toxic,and anti-pruritic.

• Dosha karma- pacifies tridosha ,but mainly beneficial for vata and pitta doshas
• It has effect on rasa ,raktha,asthi,majja
• Main indications - skin disorders and diseases of musculoskeletal system and nervous system.
• ‘Panchtikta Ghrita Guggulu’ possess Vata pacifying property thus, reduces intensity of pain, stiffness
and discomfort in cervical region. Also, the formulation has balya and rasayana i.e rejuvenating action
on bony tissues thus, arrests osteo porosis and degenerative process probably by promoting calcium
binding capacity of cells.reduces the inflammation by the presence of thiktha rasa dravyas
26. Dosage and administration
• Chidren : 1.5 to 6 gm(once or twice a day)
• Adults : 3 to 12 gm(once or twice a day)
• Time of administration :
• On empty stomach in the morning and late afternoon .

• In this study ‘Panchatikta Ghrit Guggulu’-Nasya (nasal insufflations) and Internal use(20 ml twice a
day for 2 months) was prescribed.
• ‘Panchatikta’ group of herbs (Nimb, Amruta, Vrush, Patol, Nidigdhika) are the best herbs (Rasayana)
for bony tissues i.e.Asthi dhatu.
• When ‘Panchtikta Ghriat Guggulu’ is administered though ‘Nasya’, it stimulates the optic nerve
fibers which helps in pacifying the supply of nutrients to the adjacent muscle fibers and cervical
vertebrae,forms newer healthier tissues thus, help in arresting degenerative process and strengthens
the muscles and boney tissue.
