The document summarizes an industrial training at Heavy Engineering Corporation Ltd (HEC) in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. HEC has three main manufacturing units: a Foundry Forge Plant that produces castings and forgings, a Heavy Machine Building Plant that manufactures equipment for steel plants and other industries, and a Heavy Machine Tools Plant that designs machine tools. The training covered tours of each plant and their manufacturing capabilities. Key equipment seen included a 6000-ton hydraulic press and large lathes and boring mills. HEC produces products like electric overhead cranes, mining shovels, and specialized machine tools.
2. HISTORY
• The journey of Heavy Engineering Corporation Ltd commenced with its
inception on 31st December,1958. The company was one of the ambitious
industrial projects of Independent India.
• In an endeavour to increase the steel producing capability of the country
to support infrastructure development , HEC was set up to supply steel
plant equipment and machineries.
• In due course , HEC leveraged its strength and diversified to different
sectors like mining , railways , power and defence.
• HEC is one of the largest integrated engineering complex of India located
at Dhurwa sector , Ranchi , Jharkhand.
3. OPERATING UNITS
The company has three manufacturing units and one project execution
division :

15. MY OBSERVATIONS….
The plant was very well planned in the sense of transfer of
goods from one shop to another.
The FFP and HMBP were further divided into 5 individual
shops while the HMTP was divided into 3 shops.
HMBP :
Machine shop
Fabrication shop
Gear cutting shop
Steel structural shop
Assembly shop
16. HMTP :
Light machining shop
Medium Machining shop
Heavy machining shop
The foundry shop was under maintenance due to lack of
funds
High wastage of scrap metal
Pieces manufactured or machined used to take a period
of around 2-3 days to 2 months.
