Slavery  Began in the ancient times(as early as ancient Egypt and China) Known as the triangle trade, the colonists traded rum and molasses with Africa in Brought from North Mauritania  Whites traditionally bought and owned Blacks Slaves had to do as they were told by their masters
Slavery  Novel    -Similar in the context that blacks are discriminated against by the whites.   - In the novel, Blacks were always suspected of committing crimes and breaking the law    -Study of slavery allows us to have background information on why the blacks were discriminated against.(In the past, Blacks were slaves and thus even though slavery was abolished, the Whites regarded them as beings of a lower  status. Also caused by Jim Crow laws )
Civil war Southern states     -Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia,  North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware Abraham Lincoln was the president who declared war against the South
Civil war South had lost control of Congress, and was no longer able to silence calls for an end to slavery by the more populated free states of North. Duration :April 12, 1861 – April 9, 1865 Slavery for the Confederacy's 3.5 million blacks effectively ended.
Civil war Novel: 	- Tom Robinson was ‘fighting’ against Mayellain the court, so it was like “Black vs White”
Jim Crow law Song name Segregation of public schools, washrooms, transportation,  State and local laws in the United States enacted betwe6en 1876 and 1965 Blacks were unhappy of the unfair treatment.

Civil Rights movement Began in 1950 Aimed to abolish public and private acts of racial discrimination and against African Americans and other disadvantaged groups. The Chicano Movement    -sought political empowerment and social inclusion for Mexican-Americans American Indian Movement    -Violent  protest gatherings,  armed seizure public facilities
Civil rights movement Supported by president John F. Kennedy African Americans regained their rights as Americans.(No more segregation) Relation to Novel: -Atticus became Tom’s Robinson’s defending lawyer in order to prove his innocence, and did not refuse to take the case just because he is a Black.
Montgomery Bus Boycott &Scottsboro trials Both the Blacks were fighting for their rights due to the biased transport system Nine black teenaged boys were accused of rape, and similarly, Tom Robinson was falsely accused of rape.
Traits of a true southern Belle and southern gentleman Southern Belle 	-Proper etiquette, penmanship, ballroom dancing, needle work and even mourning customs Southern gentleman 	-Polite, respectful Southern ladies sew to pass their time
