DEFINITION OF BIM

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional
characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a
facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from
earliest conception to demolition.

The vision for NBIMS is “an improved planning, design, construction, operation, and
maintenance process using a standardized machine-readable information model for each
facility, new or old, which contains all appropriate information created or gathered about
that facility in a format useable by all throughout its lifecycle.”

  • 3. DEFINITION OF BIM Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition. The vision for NBIMS is “an improved planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance process using a standardized machine-readable information model for each facility, new or old, which contains all appropriate information created or gathered about that facility in a format useable by all throughout its lifecycle.” Source: National Institute of Building Sciences ALL RIGHTS RESERVED © BRICSNET 2011
