2. What is Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is very important in sports. Sportsmanship can provide
the positive atmosphere the sport needs and give the energy also needed.
Sportsmanship can be shown by helping and encouraging others,
fairness, integrity, respect and responsibility. With those things the sport
will become more enjoyable and more pleasant atmosphere.
Sportsmanship involves a lot of things but it’s very important in sports.
3. Sportsmanship and Ethics in
Sports
Sportsmanship and ethics can be shown by athletes, coaches, owners, and the
fans. They can show sportsmanship by four key virtues which are integrity,
fairness, responsibility, and respect. These things in sports today have come and
gone at some points. They are people who demonstrate these qualities but some
who don’t. Sportsmanship and ethics need to be shown in sports instead of
gamesmanship. Everyone can show sportsmanship and it can make for sports to
be more enjoyable, pleasant and positive.
4. Ethics: Owners and Coaches
Owners and coaches are always being watched closely for what they
do. People may not realize some of the actions they do. A coach or
owner should always be positive and demonstrate the positive
sportsmanship and ethics required. They can show sportsmanship by
not running the score, giving a player equal playing time, or just by
the things they say about others. Coaches and owners are watched
closely and they should always demonstrate sportsmanship and
ethics in the sport they are involved in.
5. Ethics:
Owners and
Coaches
Cont.
Tom Izzo has shown ethics and sportsmanship in
sports by giving to a player and showing his respect.
He gave a senior player who was injured for the year a
chance to play one final game in the senior game. The
player cherished the moment and received a standing
ovation as he entered the game.
Owners have showed bad sportsmanship in
sports by making inappropriate comments towards
another person. James Dolan demonstrated this when
he stated a comment towards Charles Oakley that said
he needed help.
6. Ethics: Health and Safety
Health and safety are very important in sports. Athletes are heavily at
risk with injuries and some injuries can be very serious if not treated
properly. The way an injury can be treated can be seen as ethical or
unethical. Injuries need to be treated properly and they need to
follow a certain procedure when evaluating.
7. Ethics: Health and Safety
Cont.
Players can suffer many injuries and some more serious than
others. Injuries should be always treated properly. For example
concussions need to be evaluated and watched closely. A player
with symptoms of a concussion shouldn’t return to the game until
cleared. That is seen as ethical health care because it was handled
properly and the player isn’t going back to the game when they
are unable to perform properly. Unethical health care is when the
procedure is handled incorrect and they may let the player go
back to help with the success of the team. This was seen with
Le'veon Bell when the Steelers didn’t report an injury for they
could have him practice and be able to play.
8. Ethics: Athletes and
Community
Athletes can be influences on the community and
fans. Their actions can be seen as positive or
negative affects. A player can help impact the
community by their actions and success and it can
build a city up and provide the positive energy the
community may need.
9. Ethics: Athletes
and Community
Cont.
Drew Brees helped New Orleans through
Hurricane Katrina. The city was destroyed but
Brees started a foundation to provide help to the
ones who needed it. Michael Vick was different
when he was the face of Atlanta till he was
arrested for dog fighting. He let the city of
Atlanta down and the city was affected greatly.
A player's actions can be a great impact on the
community. Players are looked up to and the
cities energy may run on how a player helps or
hurts the city. Players need to provide more help
for a community and it means a lot to be willing
to give and help build the city back up like Drew
Brees did with New Orleans.
10. Ethics: Fan
BehaviorFan behavior is very important in sports. There are good fans and then fans
who go too far. A good fan can be seen as one who is always supporting
their team no matter the performance and they are not yelling at opposing
teams and officials. A good fan will represent their team and will always
cheer them on. A fan who has gone too far is making inappropriate
comments towards others and not supporting their team when things aren’t
going well. They will scream and yell obsevilly and not be under control. A
good fan is the one we need in sports. They are the positive energy in the
sport and a fan that goes too far can cause the negative attitude towards the
team and also fans around them.
11. Conclusion
Sportsmanship in sports is very important.
If the fans, owners, coaches, and players all
show good sportsmanship and ethics
during the game it will become very
enjoyable in the sports world. I believe
that sportsmanship will continue to get
better in sports in the future. This will
happen because players and coaches are
starting to see the impact they have on
others and their actions are important.
Fans will soon realize the importance of a
good fan and one who goes too far. There
still will be some things that will be
unethical but sportsmanship will continue
to get better in the future.
I chose this image because it
shows sportsmanship that athletes
can demonstrate in a sport.
Winning isn’t always the most
important but playing the sport with
sportsmanship is.
