How do we learn from what other people and organizations have done? The healthcare sector has one of the highest rates of workplace violence in Ontario.

SOLUTION THE Colleaga is an innovation engine which allows staff-sourced ideas and the most relevant ideas from global communities of practice to move through a structured process to create value more quickly. PROJECT THE Timeline: ~3 month trial November 2016-March 2017 Goals: Increased engagement over the course of the program & identification of value- driving projects Numbers: 37 ideas, 96 comments, 25 participants / 35 users Shortlisted Ideas – 2 quick wins and 2 potential projects - centred around staff skills development, awareness and communication, and delighting patients Next step  Business Case development Potential impact > $1M in cost savings and cost avoidance (reduced workplace insurance premiums) Early Results show excellent potential for positive outcomes and the enculturing of innovation at MSH Define Challenge Framework Redefine Issues Generate Ideas Plan Implementation Implement Measure Value Call to Action: Reduce Workplace Violence at MSH
  • 5. LEARNINGS EMBRACING FAILURE & 1. Structured innovation requires effort but facilitates faster movement of ideas towards value. 2. The platform encourages collaboration. 3. Innovation is a team sport. The ability to comment on others’ ideas improves upon them. Plan Do Check Adjust4. We need to find ways to make the platform more accessible to time-strapped healthcare workers who do not have a dedicated computer or workstation. 5. How do we make space for grass-roots innovation to shape the hospital’s future without taking away from patient care?
  • 6. NEXT STEPS THE Colleaga is orchestrating an innovation ecosystem. Our goal is to spread learnings to other hospitals and health system players.
