Why Congress needs to repeal the abortion restriction that prohibits federal Medicaid
funding for abortions
Abortion has been a controversial topic for quite some time now; whether or not it should
be legalized depends on the government that gives Congress the power to ensure to do what is
right by the law. The federal government provided public funds for the low-income people
through Medicaid until it was abolished from the health care system. Abortion debates frequently
have spiritual, political, and cultural aspects(Nevitte et al., P 1). The debate appears to be higher
by two opposing perspectives: the counter view, which concedes that Abortion is a protected
characteristic for women, and the anti view, which contends that Abortion is morally wrong and
that the government ought to have the power to prohibit and penalize Abortion. Therefore, this
editorial will argue why Congress needs to repeal the abortion restriction that prohibits federal
Medicaid funding for abortions.
Abortion was not considered a legal problem in the early nineteenth century; hence it was
carried out independently of individual governments. Different states imposed their rules on the

restrictions they had on Abortion, and it was okay that way; feminists came up strongly by
disapproving of Abortion on cultural or ethical considerations. Abortion is not right when carried
by a person or an institution without the person aborting having any complications that will put
their lives in danger. Abortion can cause death or even health complications that may be
irreversible, which may cause other problems on the body(Academic influence, P4-10). Some
people decide to abort because of unwanted pregnancies, teen pregnancies for lack of finance, or
rampant rape cases. For people to be in a position to pass the pregnancy phase, they should have
frequent doctor checks or even visit a phycologist if they feel the urge to commit Abortion so
that they can make decisions. At the same time, sober will not cause them regrets later on.
The Hyde Amendment excluded Abortion in 1976 after being passed by Congress, but it
changed over the years. Currently, In circumstances of cases of rape, such as when a pregnant
woman's life is threatened by a physical ailment, ailment, or accident, the federal Medicaid
program requires abortion reimbursement. The Balanced Budget Act of 1997 allows health
maintenance organizations (HMOs) servicing Medicaid beneficiaries to decline to provide
therapy or recommendation for procedures, such as Abortion, whereby the HMO objects morally
or religiously. As an outcome, even in places where financing is not biased, women seeking
abortions could have difficulty locating a practitioner. This is not fair because it focuses on low-
income individuals, for they need all the help they can get to ensure they get through their state.
Congress should repeal the abortion restrictions of the Hyde Amendment because they
are very much unfair and harm women healthwise. Whether poor or rich should be given the
same power to exercise their rights, and in a place of need that a government can provide, the
government must protect its citizens from any harm even though it entails themselves. The
federal government is putting the brakes on women who require abortions for medical reasons.

Abortion funding is prohibited to females with cancer, diabetes, or heart problems or whose
conceptions are otherwise dangerous to their health. Abortion is only authorized if a woman
might otherwise die or if her gestation is the consequence of rape or incest(ACLU, P 6-7). As a
result, the bans jeopardize the health of several women.
The Hyde Amendment is a risky and unjust regulation that allows legislators to meddle in
individual's private care decisions. Since insurance covers all gestation health care, excluding
Abortion, it intrudes on a patient's, doctor's, and family's medical insurance decisions. This is
another strong reason why Congress should abolish the restrictions on Abortion. The lawmakers
decide for the people and how the rules are going to be without being considerate, it forces
people to carry pregnancies, and the worst part about it is that it doesn't favor the people of color,
teenagers or young adults who rely on medical aids for they are not in a position even to provide
basic needs for themselves(Planned parenthood, P 5-10).
Abortion is dangerous because the outcome of it being successful is never a guarantee.
Still, Congress should allow it to be practiced by giving them the power to follow the order that
will make them have more chances of survival. Once Federal Medicaid can give insurance to
people who want to abort, they will handle the situation more calmly and fashionably. They
should also provide therapy sessions and not deprive individuals a chance to chance their minds
if given different angles on how to handle their children once birthed (Centre for Reproductive
Rights, P13-17).
In conclusion, Abortion should be allowed for anyone who wants to practice it regardless
of race, class, and age group. The repeal will go a long way in ensuring that there is equality. The

poor will access the services without being discriminated against by-laws supported by
lawmakers who are financially stable.
