1. HOW LIGHT INTERACTS WITH
OTHER OBJECTS!!
SOL 5.3C
Transparent, Translucent, and Opaque
2. IT ALL DEPENDS . . . . .
● As light travels, you know it hits many
objects.
● We have talked about how light reflects
(bounces) of some objects and is refracted
(bent) by other objects.
● Depending on what the object is made of,
light will interact in different ways.
3. TRANSPARENT MATERIALS
● Most people don’t want a
transparent shower
curtain or door!
● Why? You can see all the
way through it!!!
● Transparent materials let
ALL of the light that hits
them to pass through
them.
● Common transparent
materials are glass and
thin plastic.
4. TRANSLUCENT MATERIALS
● You can sort of see through
it, but not all the way.
● Translucent materials allow
SOME of the light that hits
them to pass through them.
● The images through
translucent materials
appear blurred or distorted.
5. OPAQUE MATERIALS
❖ You would probably
LOVE to have an
opaque curtain when
you are trying to sleep
in late!
❖ You cannot see
through opaque
materials.
❖ NONE of the light that
hits an opaque object
will pass through it!
6. YOU DECIDE . . . TRANSPARENT, TRANSLUCENT,
OPAQUE?
Sure, it’s opaque!!! No light goes through a
brick wall!
7. YOU DECIDE . . . TRANSPARENT, TRANSLUCENT,
OPAQUE?
● Sure, it’s transparent!
Virtually ALL the light
goes through a window!!
● It’s a good thing, because
we like to see through
them!!
8. YOU DECIDE . . . TRANSPARENT, TRANSLUCENT,
OPAQUE?
● Sure, it’s translucent!! Just some of the
light goes through the lenses!
● That’s why we wear sunglasses – to block
SOME of the light!!!
9. YOU DECIDE . . . TRANSPARENT, TRANSLUCENT,
OPAQUE?
❖ Sure, it’s
translucent! We
can some of the
woman behind the
glass, but she is kind
of fuzzy!
❖ Not really . . . SHE
isn’t
fuzzy, but her image
is!
10. YOU DECIDE . . . TRANSPARENT, TRANSLUCENT,
OPAQUE?
Sure, it’s opaque!!! Light can’t travel
through thick plywood!!!
11. YOU DECIDE . . . TRANSPARENT, TRANSLUCENT,
OPAQUE?
● Sure, it’s transparent!!! All of the light that
hits the lenses is passing through them!
● It’s a good thing, because glasses are
supposed to HELP us see.
