Why did you pursue your current field of recruiting?
“Like everyone else, I fell into it by accident. But I found
that the profession is a social one, and I'm a social,
extroverted creature, so the fit was just right. The passion
got even deeper when I realized I could be making a
difference for people and companies, that was gravy on
top. Lastly, as a competitive athlete, the nature of the job
is to beat out the other recruiters who want the same
people. It was a natural fit for me.”
What’s the most important quality for someone in your field?
“You have to be organized at a very high level. There
are multiple conflicting priorities, and you need to
make spot judgements on what is most important - in
the moment. Lack of organization causes delays and
miscommunication, and that can be the detriment of
any hiring process.”
What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path?
“I was incredibly lucky to work with some of the smartest,
savviest people in the business early on in my career.
Having those mentors allowed me to see the good and the
bad in the recruiting industry and it also made me strive for
continuous improvement. Seek out a mentor and absorb all
you can. It also made me strive for continuous improvement.
Embrace your curiosity, be open to a way of doing things
which is different from how you have always done it, and
experiment daily.”

Why did you pursue your current field of recruiting?
“I think of the work that I do as leveraging technology to put
the human touch into recruiting. Initially, I was more of an
accidental tourist in talent sourcing and building talent
communities than selecting a specific career path. In
hindsight, it was the third party recruiting experiences of
managing information on talent segments and developing my
talent networks that provided the foundation for my current
work. I continue to pursue opportunities in building talent
pipelines and talent communities because I believe that a
missing component in talent acquisition is the relationship
with the prospective talent and technology can help us realize
this goal.”
What’s the most important quality for someone in your field?
“The quality that that I believe is important is change
management. By that I mean tenacity with an unrelenting
belief in the vision, while allowing for some pivots and course
changes as the mission plan is executed. I subscribe to the
notion that “everything is in beta” and the technology vendor
partners will continuously developing their products, requiring
great flexibility on our part. The implementation of a solution
that has never been done before often creates internal
tension and resistance to change that requires being artful at
change management.”
What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path?
“I would recommend a person interested in this type of role
cultivate skills in project management, excel, as well as have
a strong social media acumen. In addition, I think a solid
technical systems background could be very useful. Finally, a
strong understanding of analytics can be very useful as well.
In terms of career trajectory, I would seek positions in the
HRIS, workforce planning, staffing marketing or talent
sourcing areas of talent acquisition. The type of position that I
enjoy contains elements of each of those areas.”

Why did you pursue your current field of recruiting?
“In my role, I have a unique opportunity help drive
the evolution of employer branding and recruiting.
It’s rewarding to work in a field that is changing
people’s lives while at the same time developing
solutions that are transforming talent acquisition.”
What’s the most important quality for someone in your field?
“The ability to create change. Many companies are
reluctant to embrace new ideas. In my field of
recruiting, it’s important to help leadership and key
stakeholders understand what needs to change, why
it needs to change and the impact it will have on the
organization, not just talent acquisition.”
What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path?
“Never stop learning – study, research and explore
new ideas to keep your skills sharp. More
importantly, build your network and share ideas with
others in our field.”

Why did you pursue your current field of recruiting?
“I have a passion for recruiting and love helping
others to be better recruiters, enjoy their work more
and create a better candidate experience.”
What’s the most important quality for someone in your field?
“A mix of educational and entertainment value.”
Try to make it fun, get them excited about the
work. Must be passionate, knowledgeable,
memorable, engaging, fun.
What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path?
“Work as hard as you can, always strive to hone your
skills and follow your passions. If you’re great at it
and love doing it, there’s always a career path there.”

Why did you pursue your current field of recruiting?
“I had a background and education in Mass
Communications and Advertising and 10 years
experience in big ticket sales. When the recession hit in
2008 I had to shift my career away from the banking
world and thought that recruiting was a field that allowed
me to utilize all my skillset, experience and education all
at once. It was also ripe for innovation and I found
applying marketing and technology principals to the craft
helped me be very successful.”
What’s the most important quality for someone in your field?
“I lead a recruiting organization for a fast growing
start up and I think the most important quality of a
recruiting leader is to know themselves well. Know
your strengths and weaknesses and hire strong
leaders on your team that complement you and fill
those gaps that you may have.”
What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path?
“For someone looking to lead large recruiting teams, my
advice would be to focus on the higher level in whatever role
you are in now. Look holistically at recruiting as an engine
and continually look for ways to build a better, faster one that
at the same time makes recruiting more human. That's been
my mantra for over 5 years and it's done me well and lead
me where I am today. I think most recruiters get bogged
down in the weeds and the day to day of recruiting without
thinking holistically at the bigger picture and how they can do
things differently.”

Why did you pursue your current field of recruiting?
“I’m on a mission to help recruiters and sourcers
become Talent Advisors, and deliver more value
without feeling like order taking, people pleasing,
backseat passengers. And I’m on a mission to
help Hiring Managers be better leaders around
recruiting. I love my job, as I get to help build skills
in the people who are building their companies.”
What’s the most important quality for someone in your field?
“I think consultants and trainers need to balance
confidence with humility, knowing that not all
companies and cultures are the same; what you
recommend for one firm may not work at all for
another. There is no one way to do everything. I also
think you need credibility that usually only comes from
building, deploying and scaling the best practices you
share and sell in the real world of limited resources,
competing priorities, and high req loads.”
What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path?
“Put yourself in situations where you’ll get exposure
to working with high-expectation leaders. If your job
is easy today, make it harder. The biggest growth
spurts in my career as a corporate recruiting leader
came from working with unbelievably unrealistic,
demanding, smart hiring leaders - they pushed me,
and made me better.”
What’s the best part about your job?
Thank You

  • 12. Why did you pursue your current field of recruiting? “Like everyone else, I fell into it by accident. But I found that the profession is a social one, and I'm a social, extroverted creature, so the fit was just right. The passion got even deeper when I realized I could be making a difference for people and companies, that was gravy on top. Lastly, as a competitive athlete, the nature of the job is to beat out the other recruiters who want the same people. It was a natural fit for me.”
  • 13. What’s the most important quality for someone in your field? “You have to be organized at a very high level. There are multiple conflicting priorities, and you need to make spot judgements on what is most important - in the moment. Lack of organization causes delays and miscommunication, and that can be the detriment of any hiring process.”
  • 14. What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path? “I was incredibly lucky to work with some of the smartest, savviest people in the business early on in my career. Having those mentors allowed me to see the good and the bad in the recruiting industry and it also made me strive for continuous improvement. Seek out a mentor and absorb all you can. It also made me strive for continuous improvement. Embrace your curiosity, be open to a way of doing things which is different from how you have always done it, and experiment daily.”

  • 17. Why did you pursue your current field of recruiting? “I think of the work that I do as leveraging technology to put the human touch into recruiting. Initially, I was more of an accidental tourist in talent sourcing and building talent communities than selecting a specific career path. In hindsight, it was the third party recruiting experiences of managing information on talent segments and developing my talent networks that provided the foundation for my current work. I continue to pursue opportunities in building talent pipelines and talent communities because I believe that a missing component in talent acquisition is the relationship with the prospective talent and technology can help us realize this goal.”
  • 18. What’s the most important quality for someone in your field? “The quality that that I believe is important is change management. By that I mean tenacity with an unrelenting belief in the vision, while allowing for some pivots and course changes as the mission plan is executed. I subscribe to the notion that “everything is in beta” and the technology vendor partners will continuously developing their products, requiring great flexibility on our part. The implementation of a solution that has never been done before often creates internal tension and resistance to change that requires being artful at change management.”
  • 19. What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path? “I would recommend a person interested in this type of role cultivate skills in project management, excel, as well as have a strong social media acumen. In addition, I think a solid technical systems background could be very useful. Finally, a strong understanding of analytics can be very useful as well. In terms of career trajectory, I would seek positions in the HRIS, workforce planning, staffing marketing or talent sourcing areas of talent acquisition. The type of position that I enjoy contains elements of each of those areas.”

  • 22. Why did you pursue your current field of recruiting? “In my role, I have a unique opportunity help drive the evolution of employer branding and recruiting. It’s rewarding to work in a field that is changing people’s lives while at the same time developing solutions that are transforming talent acquisition.”
  • 23. What’s the most important quality for someone in your field? “The ability to create change. Many companies are reluctant to embrace new ideas. In my field of recruiting, it’s important to help leadership and key stakeholders understand what needs to change, why it needs to change and the impact it will have on the organization, not just talent acquisition.”
  • 24. What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path? “Never stop learning – study, research and explore new ideas to keep your skills sharp. More importantly, build your network and share ideas with others in our field.”

  • 28. What’s the most important quality for someone in your field? “A mix of educational and entertainment value.” Try to make it fun, get them excited about the work. Must be passionate, knowledgeable, memorable, engaging, fun.
  • 29. What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path? “Work as hard as you can, always strive to hone your skills and follow your passions. If you’re great at it and love doing it, there’s always a career path there.”

  • 32. Why did you pursue your current field of recruiting? “I had a background and education in Mass Communications and Advertising and 10 years experience in big ticket sales. When the recession hit in 2008 I had to shift my career away from the banking world and thought that recruiting was a field that allowed me to utilize all my skillset, experience and education all at once. It was also ripe for innovation and I found applying marketing and technology principals to the craft helped me be very successful.”
  • 33. What’s the most important quality for someone in your field? “I lead a recruiting organization for a fast growing start up and I think the most important quality of a recruiting leader is to know themselves well. Know your strengths and weaknesses and hire strong leaders on your team that complement you and fill those gaps that you may have.”
  • 34. What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path? “For someone looking to lead large recruiting teams, my advice would be to focus on the higher level in whatever role you are in now. Look holistically at recruiting as an engine and continually look for ways to build a better, faster one that at the same time makes recruiting more human. That's been my mantra for over 5 years and it's done me well and lead me where I am today. I think most recruiters get bogged down in the weeds and the day to day of recruiting without thinking holistically at the bigger picture and how they can do things differently.”

  • 37. Why did you pursue your current field of recruiting? “I’m on a mission to help recruiters and sourcers become Talent Advisors, and deliver more value without feeling like order taking, people pleasing, backseat passengers. And I’m on a mission to help Hiring Managers be better leaders around recruiting. I love my job, as I get to help build skills in the people who are building their companies.”
  • 38. What’s the most important quality for someone in your field? “I think consultants and trainers need to balance confidence with humility, knowing that not all companies and cultures are the same; what you recommend for one firm may not work at all for another. There is no one way to do everything. I also think you need credibility that usually only comes from building, deploying and scaling the best practices you share and sell in the real world of limited resources, competing priorities, and high req loads.”
  • 39. What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career path? “Put yourself in situations where you’ll get exposure to working with high-expectation leaders. If your job is easy today, make it harder. The biggest growth spurts in my career as a corporate recruiting leader came from working with unbelievably unrealistic, demanding, smart hiring leaders - they pushed me, and made me better.”

  1. Was doing some PR for volunteer recruiting and realized he was good at recruiting. Joined Randstad for temp staffing. Went to agency (Sapphire) for 2-3 years. Got tired of lack of control of agency, went in-house to comScore. Really enjoyed programmatic aspect of corp recruiting. Helped ramp up to take them public. Wanted a change, went to Strayer but quickly realized the industry wasn’t for him. Led a team, but realized he didn’t like that. Wanted to be output - not conductor. Wanted to get back to tech. Joined LivingSocial as a contractor - made move with a newborn (RISK). Pure recruiter role, loved it. Took over Tech Rec and Ops. Heavy recruiting ops focus - branding/events/marketing. LOVED the fast pace/growth. Went back to contracting at NPR. Loved role, but commute was brutal. Recruiter back to comScore. Easy transition back. Ind contributor role. Also doing consulting w/exaqueo.
  2. Did 25 years of 3rd party search before corporate world (99), been in 3 search firms. Wanted to get closer to the action - see the results of his labor. Loved it and never looked back. Worked in photonics and optics space to start his FT career. nLight was a well-funded VC. Did rounds of contract recruiting through a VC firm after 9/11 (long-term but cyclical gigs). At Microsoft, hired as FT recruiter. He had a choice - could do FT or take a detour and become a source to focus on their new talent community project. Risky move, but more interesting than full cycle. Was at MS 5 years, his division was closing, had internal offers but projects didn’t interest him. Joined RIM in newly created role that would expose him to international work and allow him to take a program mgmt approach to communities. Rapid growth. Rapid layoffs. Had an opportunity to join Gates Foundation. Had Lockheed offer at some time, but chose to join Gates as role was more defined and was intrigued by the brand and opportunity.
  3. With NAS for 15 years (96-11). An opportunity came to move over to corporate and move to australia. His career was going well, but he had been doing that for so long and was open to a new challenge. Wasn’t actively looking, but approached. He got a LI msg from an employer branding group. Two months later he arrived in Australia. Always wanted to work internationally. Role was through Allegis RPO. In Aus for 2 years, Ericsson approached him from RPO and proposed a global role based in Singapore. Wanted him to move back to US, but allowed him to be based in Singapore hub. RPO broadened his understanding of internal recruitment. Current - 10 regions, 130k employees, global complexity,
  4. Has never cared whether contract or not. Was always drawn to the work. Husband had benefits so she could be flexible. Took year off after 2nd baby. She started Tenfold initially as she wanted something to be flexible. Had encouragement from husband. Demand drove desire to create business. Struggled first 6 months as she determined niche. Free training initially. Most connected women in 08. Greg network b/c she didn’t have LI recruiter, wanted big database/access. Zappos was first consulting. Stay at home. WFH since 03.
  5. LS - her experience led to a lot of people asking for training help and projects based on demand for her time.. she got started with training, took some time to determine niche. Narrowed to recruiting over time. Training driven by demand. Evolved into consulting.
