DO NOT USE SURFACE TRAVERSER FOR HANDLING ROLLING STOCK WITH CATTLE GUARD
Surface Traverser – With suitable selection of Entrance height by proper Tongue
Length with respect to Carriage Wheel base, rolling stock with low bottom
clearance can be handled. But it is not possible to handle the rolling stock with
Cattle guard by standard Surface Traverser as seen the picture on left.

To compensate Increased Entrance Height / Bottom clearance of Tongue - Unique made an
innovative solution - resolved the problem by installing Special (2 Piece) Tongue.
NOTE: For Traverser handling WAG-9 increased entrance height is not acceptable.

If SR is at a lower level by 100 mm the angle formed between two pieces will be

2 Piece Tongue Explained by Photo
Front Lever (Tip end of Tongue) is hinged to Main Lever (Rear end of Tongue).
Approaching rolling stock wheel will lower the tip of front lever and as soon as wheel
rolls on this front lever, entire bottom surface of Front lever & tip of Main Lever will rest
on the SR, to bridge over the level difference between SR / TTR.

packing / plates (as seen in photo on left), to be
replaced by ‘Grouted Plate’ (as shown in above
sketch), so that the front lever, when unfolded (as
shown in dotted line), partly rest on SR / Grouted
plate, during the transfer of rolling stock.

Pit Traverser are very useful for transfer of Carriages and Loco. As SR / TTR are at same level Rolling crock can be pushed manually.
Spaces between the tracks are sloped, to facilitate vehicular movement.
Foldable Tongue was originally developed to handle rolling stock from Shop rails terminated before reaching Tongue Tip.
Please notice that Effective entrance height get reduced when SR are at higher level / Entrance height get increased if SR are at lower level. Rotation of front lever in upward direction may be reduced – if level difference observed at site is less than 80 mm.
With Traverser movement Rails installed at lower level – Entrance height is restricted to 100 mm. Therefore with further sinking of Shop rails increased entrance height will be approximately 150 mm – i.e. Traverser will continue to handle WAG-9 Loco with Bottom clearance of 140 mm near wheels on cab / 200 mm between two cabs.
