Tangram is a state-of-art resource allocator and distributed scheduling framework for Spark at Facebook with hierarchical queues and a resource based container abstraction. We support scheduling and resource management for a significant portion of Facebook's data warehouse and machine learning workloads that equates to running millions of jobs across several clusters with tens of thousands of machines. In this talk, we will describe Tangram's architecture, discuss Facebook's need for a custom scheduler, and explain how Tangram schedules Spark workloads at scale. Die Abstraktion von einzelnen Servern, Festplatten und Netzwerkverbindungen zu allgemein verfügbaren Rechen- und Speicherressourcen ist die Grundidee des Cloud Computing. Hardware wird dadurch zu einer flexiblen Ressource, die sich agil und kosteneffizient nutzen lässt. Amazon hat mit AWS diese Idee als Public Cloud für die breite Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Es gibt jedoch gute Gründe eine eigene, private Cloud zu bauen. Diese Gründe können Sicherheitsbedenken und rechtliche Kriterien sein. Zudem erleichtert die vollständige Kontrolle des gesamten Protokollstacks die Entwicklung und Wartung von verteilten und hochverfügbaren Systemen. Dr. Lukas Pustina und Daniel Schneller von der codecentric AG haben für das Startup CenterDevice eine private Cloud vom Konzept bis zum produktiven Einsatz realisiert. Dabei wurde ausschließlich Open Source eingesetzt und ein "privates Amazon” geschaffen. In dieser Cloud laufen eine Produktions- und verschiedene Staging und Testumgebungen. In diesem Vortrag sollen anhand der Entstehungsgeschichte der CenterDevice Cloud konkret Konzepte, Entscheidungen und Probleme erläutert werden. Dabei wird auch die ein oder andere Anekdote aus dem täglichen Wahnsinn der Cloud Administration nicht fehlen. Der Vortrag beleuchtet zunächst, warum explizit nur freie Software genutzt wird und welche für das Projekt ausgewählt worden ist. Anhand spezifischer Anforderungen werden die eingesetzten Komponenten Ubuntu Linux, Ansible, Ceph Object Store und OpenStack eingeführt. Die erlebten Stolpersteine und Probleme sowie deren Lösung werden zusammen mit Performance Messungen vorgestellt. Zum Abschluss gibt es einen Blick auf die Produktionsumgebung mit einer Live Demo. Das Fazit der beiden ist, dass sich die Investition in eine Open Source Cloud gelohnt hat. Jedoch gibt es viele kleine und große Probleme bis zum produktiven System zu überwinden. Hear how EA had to redesign their MySQL-based database layer on the fly, migrating over to Amazon DynamoDB, while keeping the game running. See how EA added AWS Elastic Beanstalk and Auto Scaling to simplify their deployments, while also lowering costs by enabling them to respond to changing player counts. EA shows how they switched from sticky sessions to Amazon ElastiCache, solving player disconnects and allowing further scaling out. Finally, EA shares some interesting statistics about The Simpsons: Tapped Out, as well as their overall learnings about how best to develop, deploy, and monitor a game on AWS.

Ross Piper, Vice President of Enterprise Strategy at Dropbox, discussed how the global workforce is becoming increasingly mobile during a Thought Leadership Spotlight Presented by Dropbox at the 2014 Chief Information Officer Leadership Forum in Chicago on June 19. In his presentation, “The Future of Work,” Piper noted the average mobile device user leverages three devices, and this average could rise over the next few years. Piper said data storage has been problematic for many mobile device users. Because email attachments and USB drives provide only a limited amount of storage space, Piper said, many organizations will look to the cloud to provide unlimited storage. Piper noted his company has been successful because it delivers anytime, anywhere access to data: “If you’re using Dropbox at work, we want you to be able to do it in the managed solution that gives you all the admin control, auditability and sharing capability that you’d expect within a business. That’s our mission.” In addition, Piper pointed out the user experience is critical for his company’s data storage solution. He noted all of the personal information is owned by the individual, which makes it simple for users to avoid data management and storage problems: “All of the work content is managed, controlled and really owned by the admin … All the personal data is owned by the individual. Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) and Amazon DynamoDB build together a really fast, reliable and scalable layer to receive and process high volumes of messages based on its distributed and high available architecture. We propose a full system that would handle any volume of data or level of throughput, without losing messages or requiring other services to be always available. Also, it enables applications to process messages asynchronously and includes more compute resources based on the number of messages enqueued. The whole architecture helps applications reach predefined SLAs as we can add more workers to improve the whole performance. In addition, it decreases the total costs because we use new workers briefly and only when they are required.

The combination of database systems and cloud computing is extremely attractive: unlimited storage capacities, elastic scalability and as-a-Service models seem to be within reach. This talk will give an in-depth survey of existing solutions for cloud databases that evolved in the last years and provide classification and comparison. This includes real-world systems (e.g. Azure Tables, DynamoDB and Parse) as well as research approaches (e.g. RelationalCloud and ElasTras). In practice however, there are some unsolved problems. Network latency, scalable transactions, SLAs, multi-tenancy, abstract data modelling, elastic scalability and polyglot persistence pose daunting tasks for many scenarios. Therefore, we conclude with „Orestes“ a research approach based on well-known techniques such as web caching, Bloom filters and optimistic concurrency control that demonstrates how existing cloud databases can be enhanced to suit specific applications.

Databricks allows the developers to worry about the code that will run on the Spark cluster, and not the cluster's infrastructure. It creates an envelope around Spark, abstracting all the Infrastructure requirements from the Developer. Not only the cluster, Databricks also manages the shared FileSystem that will be used for storing the data. It provides notebooks that can be used to run spark code interactively, in multiple languages. A user can also leverage Databrick's Spark-submit job feature.

This new version of the popular embedded device comes with a new iteration of Broadcom’s VideoCore GPU platform, and was released with a fully open source driver stack, developed by Igalia. The presentation will discuss some of the major changes required to support this new Video Core iteration, the challenges we faced in the process and the solutions we provided in order to deliver conformant OpenGL ES and Vulkan drivers. The talk will also cover the next steps for the open source Raspberry Pi 5 graphics stack.
