3. License Mobility Announced
“As customers evaluate and move their workloads and
server applications to the cloud, they are looking to
leverage existing licensing investments. This includes
taking advantage of cost savings that Service Providers
can deliver through shared infrastructure to achieve
economies of scale and operational efficiency. To help
address this, Microsoft will start offering license mobility
in July to extend customers’ current Volume License
investments under Software Assurance (SA) to the
cloud.” – Microsoft

5. What is License Mobility w/ Software Assurance?
License Mobility through Software Assurance gives Microsoft
Volume Licensing customers the flexibility to deploy
Windows server applications with active Microsoft Software
Assurance on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
With the Software Assurance benefit customers do not need
to purchase new licenses, and there are no associated
mobility fees.
Available July 1, 2011

6. Volume License w/ Software Assurance (SA)
Volume Licensing programs include the Enterprise
Agreement, Enterprise Subscription Agreement, Open
License, Select Plus and Microsoft Open Value
Agreement. All programs where Software Assurance
is an option.
SA is Microsoft software maintenance program aimed
at business users who use Microsoft Windows Server
and desktop application that provides upgrade rights.

8. Windows Server on AWS
The Microsoft Windows Server® operating system is
not included in License Mobility and continues to be
provided as an EC2 instance
AWS will continue to offer SQL Standard instances

10. How Does License Mobility Work on AWS?
One server application license may be assigned to one
AWS instance (no size limitations)
For example:
1 SharePoint Server license = 1 AWS instance (any
instance type, no minimum)

11. Application Client Access Licenses (CALs)
On-premises CAL’s can be applied to AWS instances of
the Microsoft Server Applications, but more CAL
licenses may be required in the event of more
connections (mirrors their current enterprise usage).
Exactly the same as on-premises today.

12. 90-Day Rule
License Mobility instances must be assigned to an
AWS Region (within a 4 hour time difference) for a
minimum of 90-days
 AWS’ US-East and US-West are considered one region
 After 90-days license can be moved to another region,
90-days clock resets

13. Customer License Verification
All customers using License Mobility through Software Assurance
must complete a license verification process with Microsoft.
Microsoft will then verify that the customer has eligible licenses
with active Software Assurance. Microsoft will also provide
confirmation to the customer and to the service provider that the
customer has successfully completed this verification process
Customer may deploy their application server software prior to the
verification process being completed; the customer is responsible
for managing true-ups and renewals as required under their
Microsoft agreement
