The story: Please keep the company names private
DowJones & Newscorp Australia â an APAC deal
NetApp had a relationship with this company because they are a big on-premises customer.
We spoke to them about a beta and found out they had a corporate mandate to move 75% of their corporate IT to the cloud.
They did not want a hybrid cloud or NPS offering because it would not meet their mandate.
They acquired another company with a large repository of images and found they could use Cloud ONTAP & SnapMirror to replicate data easily.
They used Cloud ONTAP for dev/test. This gave them an easy way to move data between premise & cloud.
Rather than buying new systems, they were able to move to the cloud.
How big is the image data? They have not moved everything to the cloud. This is still a test engine for them.
Big EBS volumes released in July.
Cloud ONTAP is a great test platform and engine to accelerate their movement to the cloud. They can try it and see ⌠and use NPS if they want to.
They used Cloud ONTAP to test moving an ERP environment to AWS, realized that Amazon storage performance was not good enough for the app.
Now theyâre looking at NPS for their ERP app.
About the win
Responding to discussions about NPS not fitting the pure cloud mandate, Cloud ONTAP was offered to solve the data environment in the cloud.
Cloud ONTAP and Cloud Manager architects reached out to the customer during the beta phase of the product and helped walk the customer through the test and POC phases
Cloud ONTAP provides the value of Data ONTAP in an otherwise new, disparate cloud environment.
Customer value
Cloud ONTAP, combined with SnapMirror replication, is the least expensive way to move data to and from the AWS cloud environment, SnapMirror storage efficient transfers minimize the AWS network charges for cloud data removal
Having the same data format as on-premises FAS environments allows the customer to use existing management and replication best practices to move large image repository to the cloud
Successful selling
Why NetApp: The company mandates cloud first and is aware of the value NetApp technology brings to the table for AWS cloud environments

Organization Overview
Wright-Pierce is an award-winning engineering firm specializing in water, wastewater, and infrastructure services for public and private clients. The firm is employee-owned, with 200 engineers and support professionals located in 7 offices.
Challenge
The firmâs growth is driving a corresponding increase in the amount of data that must be backed up and stored. When its original tape system became outdated and difficult to maintain, the firm went to ExaGrid disk-to-disk backup. This improved the speed of restores but lacked the level of reliability needed. It was also expensive to grow.
Solution
Cloud data storage presented a better alternative than continuing to expand the ExaGrid system. The transition from on-premises data storage to cloud storage was the simple matter of choosing and connecting to a cloud host (Wright-Pierce chose Amazon S3), installing the NetAppÂŽ SteelStore⢠cloud integrated storage appliance, and directing the companyâs Symantec Backup Exec⢠software to the appliance.
Benefits
With only one device to manage instead of four ExaGrid devices, and higher security in the cloud, SteelStore and Amazon S3 cloud data storage offer a big improvement over maintaining tape and disk backup systems. Wright-Pierce could also continue using the same backup software already in place.
Cost is another area in which the SteelStore and Amazon cloud solution makes more sense, especially given the competition among the major cloud storage providers. The company was previously paying Amazon $700 to $800 per month to store 10 terabytes of data. Amazonâs recent price reduction (from 7.5 cents/ gigabyte/month to 3 cents/gig/month) reduced Wright-Pierceâs monthly fee to approximately $300.
Not having to maintain tape and disk-to-disk backup systems, along with a 20% reduction in power and lower cooling costs due to a smaller footprint, provide additional cost savings.
Restore times are much faster when the data is pulled from SteelStore compared to tapes, and about the same as restore times from the ExaGrid system.
