In this hands-on lab, you'll learn how to create containerized applications and test them in a Red Hat OpenShift development cluster. You'll quickly develop a basic containerized application, break down an application into multiple containers, and then deploy these images to container host platforms. You’ll get a feel for the different container host platforms and learn how to choose the best one for your container needs. Finally, you’ll understand what to consider and what tools are available when implementing a containerized, microservices architecture.

OpenShift Web Console.

Time to play with the new technology -
Service Broker. Deploy application and bind

2017 was a banner year for change and disruption at Lockheed Martin. Specifically Enterprise IT, moving to cloud and taking a chance on Containerization as a Service with Docker. As innovation accelerates and customer needs rapidly evolve, Lockheed Martin must become increasingly agile. Rapidly responding to customer requirements is key, and to facilitate overall business goals, Enterprise IT needs to be agile. We are experiencing software development lifecycles moving from waterfall to agile models of development. These changes are moving downstream toward Enterprise IT operations with the evolution of DevOps. In order to meet the demands of the customer and make significant progress on our cloud journey, we needed to look at changing how we manage infrastructure, how we change our IT culture and ultimately how we innovate at scale. That’s where the story of i2 labs begins. This presentation will focus on the creation of i2 labs at Lockheed Martin, which inspired and enabled people and processes to invest in Docker as a company, Containerization as a technology and DevOps as a methodology. But in practice, innovation and process optimization doesn’t come naturally. Our Scientists will often download and deploy niche open source software to solve key scientific problems, resulting in adoption and abandonment of different software components. Additionally, to support the needs of our R&D organization by embedding analytics within the business, we have several Hadoop clusters with different hardware genotypes each with its own respective entry points. So many entry points can become a nightmare to manage let alone customize based on the needs of the end users. In this session, Ranjith Raghunath, Director, Big Data Solutions, Data Centre of Excellence and Lindsay Edwards, Head, Respiratory Data Sciences Group, will share how GSK is using Docker to deliver ‘edge nodes on demand,’ decoupling a gateway from a specific cluster, allowing users to move from one cluster to another while keeping everything they have intact, and reducing deployment of a production grade software package from 6 months to a few hours.

With the rise of Docker, we have seen an unprecedented interest in container technologies where small companies and big enterprises bet their future on these technologies. This trend bases on an immense adoption of containers from software developers. And it has been agreed upon that they are considered highly beneficial for modern engineering practices like Agile and DevOps. But there is a new kid in town that proclaims a more radical approach: Serverless or FaaS: Function-As-A-Service. This paradigm suggests that a developer should only write functions and react to events. The functions are written in high-level programming languages like Javascript, Java or Python, and the underlying compute infrastructure like containers or VMs is transparent to the user. That raises the question: Is the container revolution already dead before it really started? And who now needs container technologies in a serverless world? In this talk we discuss these questions from both a containers advocate and serverless fanboy viewpoints. We confront these two approaches, show the differences, individual strengths and weaknesses and where they complement each other. The Self-Service Developer In this talk, Laszlo revisits the primary motivations of why companies adopt container technologies in such a rapid pace and what became possible with the latest innovation in the container and CI/CD ecosystem. The talk iterates through the building blocks of self-service platforms. Platforms that allow developers to release software without asking for permission, or support from other teams or departments - so managers have fewer constraints to navigate, and instead of helping developers, ops people can focus on building platforms and resiliency into the system. The "self-service developer" vision is not only achievable by the big tech companies anymore, but increasingly becoming table stakes for every organization that produces software.
