In this session, we walk through the architecture and key learnings of Alcon, the developer of SMART Suite, a digital platform designed to streamline and simplify cataract surgery for surgeons and patients. Leveraging Philips’ HSDP Edge (based on AWS Snowball Edge), Alcon deploys a local access point for IoT devices to locally connect to in order to access the discovery, proxy, data broker, and firmware services. By hosting these services locally at the site, Alcon achieves faster response times to local events and can continue to operate in the event of a loss of connectivity. Snowball Edge is also a consolidation point for local data sets that will be asynchronously replicated to the cloud.

NetApp receives 70 billion data points of telemetry information each day from its customer’s storage systems. This telemetry data contains configuration information, performance counters, and logs. All of this data is processed using multiple Hadoop clusters, and feeds a machine learning pipeline and a data serving infrastructure that produces insights for customers via an application called Active IQ. We describe the evolution of our Hadoop infrastructure from a traditional on-premises architecture to the hybrid cloud, and lessons learned. We’ll discuss the insights we are able to produce for our customers, and the techniques used. Finally, we describe the data management challenges with our multi-petabyte Hadoop data lake. We solved these problems by building a unified data lake on-premises and using the NetApp Data Fabric to seamlessly connect to public clouds for data science and machine learning compute resources. Architecting a truly hybrid cloud implementation allowed NetApp to free up our data scientists to use any software on any cloud, kept the customer log data safe on NetApp Private Storage in Equinix, resulted in faster ability to innovate and release new code and provided flexibility to use any public cloud at the same time with data on NetApp in Equinix. Introduction: This session will cover learning about fundamentals of Apache Kafka and SMM (Streams Messaging Manager) Format: This session will start with understanding the basic concepts/entities of Apache Kafka like Brokers, Topics, Producers and Consumers/Consumer Groups. It will then delve deeper in to advanced topics like idempotent producer, transactional API in Kafka for exactly once processing, authentication, authorization, replication, log compaction, compression, performance, etc. It will later on be followed by a demo of SMM, an open source Cloudera initiative to help users of Kafka get a better insight in to their Kafka clusters from an operational perspective using an elegant and slick GUI rather than writing complex manual scripts. It will also cover a demo of Alerting/Notification framework that can be used to trigger alerts and notify based on certain conditions one wants to monitor for. Objective: The objective of this session is to learn about Apache Kafka and illustrate how SMM can help to answer questions that arise in production deployments. Example questions are “Do I have any offline topic partitions”, “Which consumer group is falling behind most”, “What producers are generating the most data right now”, “How does data in my application topic look like” and so on. It will also aim to get familiar with SMM GUI exploring different views around different entities like Brokers, Topics, Producers and Consumer Groups so that user can quickly look for valuable information needed to monitor Kafka clusters or their application.
