In this session, the BBC’s lead architect describes the approach behind creating iPlayer architecture, which uses Amazon SQS and Amazon SNS in several ways to improve elasticity, reliability, and maintainability. You see how BBC uses AWS messaging to choreograph the 200 microservices in the iPlayer pipeline, maintain data consistency as media traverses the pipeline, and refresh caches to ensure timely delivery of media to users. This is a rare opportunity to see the internal workings and best practices of one of the largest on-demand content delivery systems operating today.

The release process lacked the ability to absorb frequent changes and adapt to rapid market trends. This session looks into how Cisco’s IVP Solution team evolved a production system from its monolithic design into a microservices platform, leveraging cloud services, automated deployments, and delivery pipelines. Through this transition the team adopted a biweekly deployment cadence. This ultimately enabled a fast-paced migration to an AWS environment, using AWS services such as Amazon EC2, Amazon RDS, and Amazon Elasticsearch Service.

Netflix is big and dynamic. At Netflix, IP addresses mean nothing in the cloud. This is a big challenge with Amazon VPC Flow Logs. VPC Flow Log entries only present network-level information (L3 and L4), which is virtually meaningless. Our goal is to map each IP address back to an application, at scale, to derive true network-level insight within Amazon VPC. Netflix is the world's leading internet television network. In this presentation, I talk about the aspects of Netflix culture that have contributed to its success. The freedom and responsibility culture, with highly aligned, loosely coupled teams of amazing, enthusiastic, helpful, high performance people with excellent judgement has helped build Netflix to adapt and change quickly, and iterate to make the best service possible. By eliminating rules and processes, and ensuring that employees have the contexts of the business in all aspects, Netflix has enabled employees to use their judgement to get things done rather than relying on control or process. This has resulted in Netflix becoming a leader in not only internet streaming, but also cloud computing, media, and culture. Because of the Netflix culture, we have been able to attract and retain great employees. I give a few examples from my team, Edge Engineering of how the culture enables us to build the high scale, resilient and dynamic services that are the front door to the Netflix streaming application, and how the freedom we have has enabled us to open source core technologies that are needed for large scale, service-oriented architectures in a cloud environment. This slideshow also gives a high level overview of how the streaming service works, and how Netflix's Open Connect Appliance can help ISPs.
