DIRECTOR'S REASONS
With my film and all I write, I wish first to establish an invitation, a passionate and furious
one, to read about worlds that fragment reality whose understanding almost always forces
the viewer to move through a border area, of limits, where it is necessary to raise the hand
to grasp the secrets I hide. Before cinema, my relationship with art was established by my
family environment, I look back and I assume that if my family had not brought me up in
culture (two philosophers and a brother writer) it would be less likely to have seen at an
early age all Murnao´s filmography and analyzed films as "Silence", “Hour of the Wolf",
"The Godfather" and seen amazed "City Lights" and "A Woman of Paris".
Then the movies and books that marked me forever would come as all Hesse, Kafka, the
unbeatable "Apocalypse Now," Sabato, Borges, García Márquez, "Blade Runner", Tarkows-
ky´s cinema, Abel Gance´s, Erice´s, unique works as "Person" "Shoah," "To Kill a Mocking-
bird" ... And that made it not to be so complicated that from 16 to 20 I had written, direc-
ted and starred six theatre plays. That first stage I think it really was my training, where I
learned to place the actors, through attempting to make a consistent scenography, stories
and images of the words I had written.
I always did things that were dialogues with myself, it was normal that the most repeated
7. 6
phrase from people who went to see my plays was that they had not understood anything.
When I wrote and starred in my first work for cinema “Orxo”, I saw that cinema allowed
me to shape my dreams (though it is certainly in the theater where there is the truth of
the creative process, and the leap is much purer than in the cut and paste of the cinema)
and after this attempt which for me was my other training I decided to make my most
ambitious project. I was going to take full control of a movie, and thus "Tilda & Jean" was
born. A film that would be the test of whether I was really going to be able to carry out
a project of this magnitude at the age of 23. I finally got to finish and reach and presen-
ce in rooms in some pairs of festivals. For me an absolute triumph that I would not get
without the help of hundreds of people behind. Then everything was difficult, I made an
experimental webseries called "Artemia" and the result was lame, it was a blow to me, but
with enormous potential to give it a chance and do something really good. ,After that I
wrote hundreds of short stories, and there were three that seemed necessary and perfect
to bring to the screen, the first of them is "Nests of light", again my obsession appears to
place the action around the sea, placing two characters within walls, and to tell as before a
magical dirty realism in a conflict that changes the lives of the characters.
When I see it, I think it is the most technical of all done, and it has been an experience
of shooting that has made me grow more. I do not think one can speak of a turning point
because the format is short, I imagine the jump will be with the second or third movie.
Antelme said at the beginning of his most famous work "The human species" that of the
little we know of the world the best you get to know, never knowing at all, it is ourselves,
and I think that's a little what people who are dedicated to this do, trying to know more
and if it is possible to raise one’s hand and stroke the secrets that others keep from us.
