General objectives:
Partial goals:
1-Enable the students to know the uses of the past tenses and how to apply them in sentences in all tenses, as well as
the application of structures for past tenses in the correct way.
2-Enable students to form Negative, Yes/No and Wh- questions in the right procedure in all past tenses.
3-Enable students to know the uses of the all-past tenses and to apply the structures of this rule in the correct
sentences.
1- Enable the students to differentiate between the past possible, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect
continuous.
2-Enable the students to form the structure of past possible, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect
continuous in correct way.
3-Enable students to form correct questions and answers in past tenses.

Examples :
. The simple past is the basic form of
past tense in English. It is used to
talk about a completed action in a
time before now. The time of the
action can be in the recent past or
the distant past and action duration
is not important.
What is past simple ?
What is the use of past simple?
1- Regular verbs: end with ( ed)
2-Irregular verbs: verbs that have
different endings ( ex: go – went )
Structure of past simple:
PAST

1- something that happened once in the past.
2- something that happened several times in the past.
3- something that was true for some time in the past.
4- we often use expressions with ago with the past
simple.

I met my wife in 1983.
We went to Spain for our holidays.
They got home very late last night.
When I was a boy, I walked a mile to school every day.
We swam a lot while we were on holiday.
They always enjoyed visiting their friends.

Past perfect
What is past perfect :
is a verb tense used to talk about
actions that were completed before
some point in the past.
Past perfect formula:
Subject + had + [past participle]
It doesn’t matter if the subject is
singular or plural; the formula doesn’t
change. e.g “ she had met him
before the party “ .

1. After Sofia had finished her work , she went to
lunch.
2. After she had moved out , I found her notes.
3. I washed the floor when the painter had gone.
4. She had lived here for three years by the time we
met.

How to form past
perfect sentences :
1. negative sentences.
2. yes/no + Wh-questions .

Negative
To make the negative form, you use ‘not’ and put it
right after ‘had’
Yes / no questions
Wh- questions
To create a question that will be answered with a yes or no, start
the question with Had (Hadn’t for a negative question) then add a
subject (the person or thing that had done the action) followed by
(Past Participle) form of the verb and then add the rest of the
sentence.

2- Had Adam ever spoken to the CEO before he was fired ?

wh- words are what, where, when, why, who, how, how
many, how much , start with wh-word, then add had, then the
followed by (Past Participle) form of the verb then add the
rest of the sentence.

What is the past perfect continuous? How to form the past perfect continuous?
What are the uses of the past perfect
continuous?
The structure of past perfect continuous.
An action that started in the past continued
up until another time in the past.
We create sentence with the past perfect
continuous by using ‘had been’ and the
main verb in the –ing form.
1. To refer to an action in the past which
continued until another action took place.
2. To emphasis that something occurred
for a long time before event in the past.
3. To explain why an activity or
feeling in the past occurred.
Affirmative: Subject + had been + V ing
Negative: subject + hadn’t been + V ing
