 An Overview of Standard Area 13
 “Demystifying” & Alleviating concerns over the
ability to integrate Standard Area 13 content into
your lesson plans
 Instructional Examples for each Standard and Grade

Why is this Necessary?
According to the State of PA:
The “Academic” Standard for Career
Education and work reflect:
 An increasing complexity and sophistication that
students experience as they progress through
school
 What students should KNOW & be able to DO at:
 Grades 3, 5, 8 & 11

Pennsylvania’s economic future depends on
having a well-educated & skilled workforce.
No student should leave without a solid
foundation in Career Education & Work.
If Pennsylvania’s students are to succeed in the
workplace, there are certain skills they need
to obtain prior to graduation from high school.

Implementation of Standard 13
 The Bureau of Education (BSE) leaves the
responsibility to the Districts how the
Standards should be taught
 The BSE gives Districts the freedom to
implement Standard 13 via:
 Integration within the Classroom
 Integration within a Stand Alone Course

How does this Affect Teachers?
 There is no additional burden on Teachers
 Standard Areas can be integrated within the
Subject of the Lesson Plans
 English, Math, Science, History, etc
 Allows Teachers to be Creative with instruction &
how a Standard is introduced to students
 Allows Teachers to make the connections
between Academic Content and the Standard by
using real-world scenarios
