INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
1. Differences between Organic and Inorganic Compounds
Organic Compounds
1. There are about 2x10
7
compounds because of the
bonding ability of carbon atom.
2. Formed from few elements.(C, O, H, S, P, N, and
halogens.
3. Have covalent bonds, and may be huge molecules
with long chains.
4. Often liquid or gases.
5. Their reactions are slow, and catalysts are often
needed.
6. Soluble in organic solvents but not in water.
7. Have specific color and odors.
Inorganic Compounds
1. There are about 400.000 compounds.
2. Formed from about 100 different elements.
3. Have ionic bonds.
4. Most of them are solids, and have high melting and
boiling points.
5. Their reactions are fast, and simple.
6. Soluble in water and conduct electricity well in
solution.
7. Generally colorless and odorless.
2. Detection of Some Elements in Organic Compounds
• Most of the organic compounds contain C, H, O, N, P, S
and halogens. 95% of human body is made up of C, H, O,
and N.
• Hydrogen and Carbon can be detected in substances as
follows;
C(from the organic compound) + 2CuO → CO2 + 2Cu
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 ↓ + H2O
H(from the organic compound) + CuO → H2O + 2Cu
• Test for nitrogen as follows;
(NH2)2CO + 2NaOH → Na2CO3 + 2NH3↑
3. Formula Concept in Organic Chemistry
In inorganic chemistry one formula represents only one
compound. But in organic chemistry one formula may
represent many different compounds. For this reason it is
necessary to show the structures of compounds in organic
chemistry. There are three ways to write a formula organic
chemistry.
1. Empirical Formula
• Indicates type and ratio of atoms in a compound. For
example CH2 may represent either C2H4 or C4H8.
2. Molecular Formula
• Indicates actual number of atoms in a compound.
For
example CH4 , C2H4 , C6H6.
3. Structural Formula
• Indicates actual number of atoms and how they are
bonded each other. The most comprehensive formula is
structural formula.
Example 1
Different representations of C3H6 molecule.
4. Structural Theory Organic Compounds
• This theory explains how atoms are connected together
in an organic compound. It was developed by
independent studies of Butlerov, Kekule and Couper
between 1857-1861
• All atoms form a certain number of bonds. It can be
explained by “valency concept”. For example carbon is
tetravalent. Hydrogen is monovalent.
• Carbon is able to form single, double and triple bonds.
• Two compounds may have same molecular formula
but different structural formula.
