This year, our community
celebrated a special occasion
in the life of the University
we love—our sesquicen-
tennial anniversary.
Birthed 150 years ago, we have
remained the Commonwealth’s
indispensable institution
because of our long-standing
commitment to academic
excellence, innovative research,
health care and service to
our community. We’ve been
able to execute this mission
because of the generous
support from our friends.
Because of the powerful synergy
that exists between these deeply
devoted stakeholders, UK
Libraries remain at the peak of
excellence as a modern research
library system. They will
continue to undergird student
success, enhance research and
discovery, and improve the
quality of knowledge we develop
and provide for Kentucky.
Gifts to UK Libraries—
investments in creating the
best environment for UK
faculty, student, and staff
success—have amounted to
more than $1 million over the
past five years. In 2015 alone,
nearly 1,000 friends gener-
ously supported the University
of Kentucky in this way.
Our appreciation is immea-
surable. We look forward to
showcasing how these invest-
ments in the future aid us in
preparing the next generation of
leaders, scholars and citizens.
Our Medical Center Library, in
particular, serves the six health
colleges as well as all of UK
HealthCare. In the coming year,
we’ll move forward with goals of
updating the study space inside
the library and developing an
area to house our rare medical
text collection. We look forward
to further supporting students
and faculty who conduct
important work in this space.
I’d like to thank Dean
Birdwhistell for his leadership
and stewardship of our
University Library System.
Thank you, also, to the
UK Libraries National
Advisory Board for their
guidance and support.
And, of course, we extend our
deepest gratitude to our generous
friends and supporters who help
us serve the Commonwealth, as
the University for Kentucky.

3. In 2013 the William T. Young Library unveiled a renovation project funded entirely by donations from
our friends and supporters. One wing of the second floor, formerly full of shelving, is now dedicated to
information literacy instruction and collaborative study spaces for students. It includes a glass-walled,
technology-enabled classroom in which librarians assist students in learning about information
discovery and usage.
The space also includes study rooms with large monitors that may be attached to several student laptops at
one time for interactive learning and creativity. Modular furniture and large whiteboards for study groups
round out this 21st century learning environment.

Medical Center libr ary
Private giving is
especially important
to the Medical Center
Library, another space in
the midst of a dramatic
and much-needed
transformation.
Opened in the 1960s, the
facility initially housed
books and journals. Today
the Medical Center Library
(MCL) is a space for active
learning and interaction.
Gifts enabled the MCL to
renovate space in 2015, adding
modular furniture, new seating,
and open study areas for
students and faculty from UK’s
six health care colleges as well
as medical professionals and
staff from UK HealthCare.
Future pharmacists, doctors,
nurses, and health science
professionals work alongside
clinicians and physician-sci-
entists, all utilizing the
information provided by our
skilled medical librarians.
Plans are underway for an
exhibit area within the MCL
for rare and historic medical
texts, offering clinicians and
students the opportunity to
appreciate medical develop-
ments across the generations.
With the support of our
donors, we look forward to
serving UK’s rapidly expanding
health care community.
5. “i love the library! i’m very happy
with the services the staff provides.
i go there almost on a daily
basis.”–undergraduate student
Learning Lab internships are open to undergraduate students
from any major and are supported by gifts to UK Libraries.
A highly successful program made possible by our donors is the Special Collections
Learning Lab. Four undergraduate students are selected annually for year-long internships
providing archival processing experiences in the Special Collections Research Center.
During the 2014–2015 academic year, Ann Baillie from Chicago, Illinois; Faith VanMeter from
Greensburg, Kentucky; Lauren Farmer from Lexington, Kentucky; and Kristen Thornsberry from
Richmond, Kentucky interned under the supervision of Learning Lab Manager Stacie Williams to
process archival collections. Each intern created a scholarly project based on their particular research.
As a result of their Learning Lab experiences, Kristen Thornsberry decided to pursue a career as a
librarian/archivist, and Ann Baillie published a peer-reviewed article following her internship.

7. We are very fortunate to have the William T. Young endowment that supports the humanities, social
sciences, and health care fields, as well as clinical divisions like the Markey Cancer Center.
Other endowments make possible the collection of unique research materials for the Special Collections
Research Center including rare books, public policy collections, and the internationally recognized
oral history collection.

Dear Friends:
UK Libraries benefits from
the tremendous support of
President Eli Capilouto, Provost
Tim Tracy, and the entire
UK administrative team.
We are also fortunate to have an
outstanding and dedicated faculty
and staff within UK Libraries.
UK Libraries is comprised
of the flagship William T.
Young Library and ten branch
libraries: Agriculture/Equine,
Design, Education, Engineering,
Fine Arts, Medical Center,
Lexmark, Science, Trans-
portation, and the Special
Collections Research Center.
The diversity of library resources
affords a variety of opportu-
nities for donor partnerships
to support student success in
particular academic or subject
areas. By supporting an area
that holds special significance
to you, you enable us to support
our students while honoring
you and your family.
For more information about how
you can support UK Libraries,
I encourage you to speak with
Director of Development,
Daniel King. Together, we can
continue to build the library
that Kentucky students deserve
and our researchers require.
Sincerely,
Dr. Terry Birdwhistell
Dean of Libraries and
William T. Young Endowed Chair

for caring about the students and
community. you make it easy and plea-
surable to study.” –graduate student
9. Research Endowments
Endowments that support UK Libraries
research, like the Young Endowment, ensure
that we can continue to succeed in our
mission of making resources immediately
available to students and faculty, furthering
the causes of scholarship and research at UK.
Special Collections Research Center
The mission of the Special Collections Research
Center is to locate and preserve materials
documenting the social, cultural, economic,
and political history of the Commonwealth of
Kentucky. Gifts to the Special Collections Devel-
opment Fund help us in our mission to archive
and preserve Kentucky history and culture.
The Louie B. Nunn Center
For Oral History
The Nunn Center, one of the leading oral
history research centers in the world, collects
and preserves oral histories on a vast array of
subjects and topics. The Center’s collection
now totals nearly 10,000 interviews. According
to former United States Senate historian Dr.
Donald A. Ritchie, “From Supreme Court
Justices, United States Senators, and civil rights
leaders to farm families, the University of
Kentucky’s oral history collection is a model of
its kind—not only for the history of Kentucky
but for Kentucky’s role on the national stage.”
By supporting the Nunn Center you help us
continue this important work of preserving the
individual voices of our history and culture.
King Library Press
Founded in 1956, the King Library Press is one
of only a few hand presses in research libraries
devoted to the tradition of fine printing and
producing books and broadsides. The King
Press does typesetting, printing, and binding.
There are opportunities for apprentices as well.
Supporting the King Press preserves the historical
practice of hand printing for future generations.
The Library Enrichment Fund
The Library Enrichment Fund supports UK
Libraries wherever the need is greatest. Most
recently, funds supported the renovation of
the second floor of William T. Young Library,
providing additional collaborative learning spaces
for students and greater access to technology.
Scholarships For Graduate and
Undergraduate Assistants
UK Libraries offers scholarships for student
workers at UK Libraries. The most common
are graduate fellowships designed to lessen
the financial burden of graduate students at
UK who have an interest in the information
profession. Recent graduate fellows have been
assigned to Young Library Reference, the Special
Collections Research Center, Research Data
Management, Cataloging and Database Integrity,
Digital Initiatives, and Web Development.
Research Skills Instruction
UK librarians teach students the skills needed
to navigate today’s vast information resources.
Our library instruction programs make students
more proficient in finding, evaluating, and using
information. As a result of becoming more infor-
mation literate and developing critical thinking
skills, students have more success in college and
in the world beyond. Thanks in part to a recent
gift from a donor interested in science education,
we are piloting a new program to hire graduate
students to instruct teaching assistants in the UK
Department of Biology. The Biology teaching
assistants then teach critical research skills to their
undergraduate students. Funding instruction for
students means empowering them to succeed.
Naming Opportunities
Endowed chairs and professorships are essential
to building a vibrant and competitive research
library and the need for this type of support
is central to the future of UK Libraries. Key
areas already identified for this type of support
are in library instruction, digital scholarship,
and oral history. UK Libraries also has naming
opportunities for the Medical Center Library,
the Special Collections Research Center, the
Education Library, and the Science Library.
specific areas we urge you to consider supporting:

You support us.
Our donors support us with gifts of
all amounts. Sometimes the gifts help
students directly by providing scholar-
ships and internship opportunities.
Other times gifts help students indirectly by
providing the funds necessary to purchase
the collections crucial to their academic work
and to provide the up-to-date study spaces
they need for 21st century learning.
You help us support students, faculty, and
staff as they do what makes our university
great: teach, learn, and research.
We support them.
Faculty and undergraduate, graduate, and
professional students across the disciplines
depend on UK Libraries. From rare 18th
century documents to the most recent medical
research, UK Libraries provides the resources
necessary for a modern research university.
Your gifts, whether made directly or through
planned and estate giving, help UK Libraries
support students with a world-class education.

Ways To Give:
Gifts of cash, stock, appreciated securities,
IRA distributions, and the like can be
utilized by UK Libraries immediately.
Gifts from $1–$24,999 can support any of
our funds at UK Libraries, providing crucial
help to whatever a donor feels passionate
about: oral history projects, preserving
historical texts, student scholarships, or the
kinds of updates that keep the UK Libraries
facilities competitive with our peers.
Gifts in an amount equal to or greater than
$25,000—usually paid over a five-year
period—can be used to create their own
funds with specific purposes. Some examples
are funds that support graduate fellowships
or the collection of a specific type of resource
for UK Libraries. Gifts at this level can also
help sponsor a number of projects associated
with the Special Collections Research Center
and the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral
History. There may also be renovation and
naming opportunities available for study
rooms and facilities in some of our libraries.
Planned and Estate Gifts
If you have considered remembering UK
Libraries in your will or estate plan, informing
us of your intent is the first step towards
making sure we use your gift the way you
wish. We can keep a document that states the
intent of your gift should we receive anything
from your will, which ultimately helps us
to be better stewards of your generosity.
Matching Gifts
Corporations frequently receive benefits from
making charitable contributions. If you or a
spouse work at or are retired from a corpo-
ration like Procter and Gamble, Toyota, Pfizer,
or any number of large corporations, they
may match gifts you make to UK Libraries.
However, the donor must initiate the matching
process through the business. If you have
any questions about whether your company
matches or not, contact the Human Resources
branch of your company to find out.
