5. Cold and Flue
• The cold and flu season is at its peak right now
and it hits hard and fast. While prevention is the
best defense, what do we do when symptoms hit?
Some of us prepare for the cold and flu season in
the fall by starting our fire cider and tinctures to
stay healthy and treat illness at the onset.
• Many herbalists keep their arsenal stocked and
ready. But, what if you find you don’t have the
herbs you need? What if the herbs you need are
not readily available in your area? Once symptoms
hit, you don’t have time to order online. You want
relief and you want it fast.
8. 1.Andrographis
Andrographis (andrographis
paniculata) is used in
Ayurvedic medicine and is
considered part of Hindu
folk medicine that originated
in India. Traditionally used
to treat upper respiratory
infections and sinusitis,
andrographis was shown in
a recent study to reduce the
symptoms of coughs, sore
throats, headache and
fever.
9. 2.Boneset
The herb boneset (eupatorium
perfoliatum) is an immune stimulant
that has a long history of being used
effectively in cases of influenza and
fever
(http://vitalitymagazine.com/article/her
bs-for-cold-and-flu/). The herb's
common name of boneset was
derived from its ability to break the
terrible fevers associated with the flu.
These fevers were so severe that
they were described as bone fever
(http://www.naturalnews.com/032076
_Boneset_fever_remedies.html).
Native Americans also used boneset
to treat body aches and pains and for
healing broken bones.
11. 4.Ginger
• Ginger – Fresh ginger root
(zingiber officinale) is a
warming botanical that has
been used as a medicine in
Asian, Indian, and Arabic
herbal traditions since
ancient times
• Ginger isantimicrobial and
anti-inflammatory. In
addition to treating cold/flu,
ginger is excellent for
nausea and vomiting.
12. 5.Sage
Sage – carminative,
antiseptic, and
astringent – the mouth
and throat plant. Used
for sore throats and
cough. Also used for
sinus congestion. Sage
should not be used
when pregnant or
breast feeding.
13. 6.Thyme

antibacterial, antiviral,
expectorant, and
astringent. Thyme is
great for respiratory

coughs. It is also good
for the stomach and
relieves gas.
14. 7. Cayenne powder
Cayenne powder –
stimulant, anti-microbial,
analgesic, carminative,
diaphoretic, and
expectorant. Cayenne
can help prevent a cold
or flu as well as shorten
the duration of a cold or
flu. It brings heat to the
body, which can help
dispel coldness.
15. 8.Lemon
Lemon – high in vitamin
C, lemon may
help decrease the
strength of the cold and
flu virus in the body and
reduce phlegm. Many
folks use lemons to
build resistance to cold
and flu, and speed up
healing.
16. 9.Echinacea
Scientific research has shown
that the herb can keep
immune systems healthy and
strong, protecting it from
common pathogens like the
influenza virus. Research
shows that echinacea extract
works against an enzyme
called hyaluronidase that
destroys the body's defenses
against diseases. Studies also
suggest that echinacea may
be helpful in not only
destroying viruses like certain
strains of influenza
but slowing tumor growth.
17. 10.Elderberry
• Elderberry (sambucus nigra ssp.
canadensis) has been used for centuries
as a tonic for colds, flu and sinus
infections
(http://cms.herbalgram.org/herbclip/388/n
ews127.html). The seventeenth century
herbalist, John Evelyn, referred to it as a
remedy "against all infirmities what-so-
ever."
While elderberry has been used for many
generations as a medicinal tea, it has
also recently been discovered that the
botanical contains viburnic acid, a
compound that encourages perspiration
and aids in detoxifying body tissues. This
means that elderberry can help reduce
fever, purify the blood and cleanse the
body's cells of pathogens.
18. 11. Lavender
The oils of this well known flower
not only smell beautiful but help
relieve headaches and calm the

in a handmade sanitizer. It’s
naturally anti-septic and anti-
bacterial and on the skin will help
stop pathogens from entering the
system
19. 12. Valerian
One thing the body really
needs when you’re ill is
sleep. The body uses the
restful period while you’re
slumbering to focus its
attention on healing. To
help with this, you could
take Valerian root instead
of taking chemical-
formulated sedatives
20. 13. Eucalyptus
The extract from the leaves
of this aromatic tree are
anti-septic and used to
relieve coughs, sore throats,
and congested lungs. The

effect is warming, and the
oils help to clear the chest,
and to relieve infection and
pain.
