5. Focus of Challenge
Consumers have a variety of reasons for using online provider
search tools. Some want to maintain existing relationships with
doctors and rely on the tools to ensure the health plan they
choose includes them. Others are looking for a new doctor.
Consumers who are shopping for providers have many
potential information needs, which are not currently addressed
by existing tools.

12. Demographic data
In September 2015, CMS updated its Medicare Part B data release to include demographic and
health information associated with each provider’s beneficiary panel. This provider level
summary (i.e., one record per NPI) now includes aggregated information on beneficiary age, sex,
race, Medicare and Medicaid entitlement, sixteen (16) chronic conditions and risk scores. More
detailed information on each variable added to this summary file is provided in the
Documentation tab of the data file. https://www.cms.gov/Research-Statistics-Data-and-
