2. Specific genre characteristics that he uses in this particular
video are all listed below:
- Settings are low budget- filmed in public areas or
outside.
- Use a very grainy filter in this video and crop the
screen to make it look as if its been filmed and played
off of film rolls.
- Use mainly artificial light in this music video other than
at the end when theyâre sat on the steps.
- tie in lyrics with story line to make it relate to him.
The lyrics suggests that the song is about the contrast
between him and her, how he seeâs himself in measure
with her and how he doesnât want to change her.
The repetition of the lyrics in the chorus that start âI know
youâre weary of me..â suggest that heâs done something to
hurt her and now sheâs forgiven him. It's clear that he
thinks of himself as been the one who damages people
and the reason for their corrupt and carries this regret
with him. The following slides go into detail on how the
visuals, lyrics and music tells his story.
3. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYRICS & VISUALS
Andrew Goodwin said in his conventions of music videos that there is a
relationship between lyrics and visuals. In âBbblueâ by olivver the kid itâs very
obvious this relationship and has been used to create significance in the
narrative of the video. On the forth line the lyrics say, âthe sun shines
through and lights you upâ, along with the visual of her stood behind a
window thatâs lit up with light. The shot is as if heâs looking up at her. The sun
is associated with warmth and happiness and this suggests that she at that
moment is both of them things. This contrast of her been in a warm light
house and him been outside in the darkness says something about where
they both are at that point in their life.
The part of the lyrics where it says, âim green just like the woods, youâre blue
just like the ocean. Your colours drown mine out in one fluid motionâ suggest
that theyâre in two different places in their life. It gives the veiwer the
impression that he looks at himself in such way he thinks that anyone is
better than himself. Blue and green arent associated strongly with any
characteristic or mood and neither the ocean or woods. Initially this
comparison wouldnât conclude that he seeâs himself as nothing in
comparison to her. What makes this inference is the last line quoted where
he says her colours drown him out in one fluid motion. The way that itâs
phrased suggest that they is no close match, no fight between them, that its
effortless for him to be alike or equal to her. This section of the lyrics, along
with the visual thatâs been screen shot to the right emphasises this.
4. The section of the lyrics where it says, âIts also drains you red just like the
devilsâ, it shows the visual of him getting out his red car in the darkness. The
devil is associated with the colour red as well as horror and darkness and
therefore we can assume that he sees himself as the devil to him and is
draining her. This along with the chorus where he goes on to talk about she
doesnât need to be scared of him but he knows she's weary of him emphasises
that he knows heâs bad for her but wants to be better.
âJust to try save you from the wolves that got you direâ, could suggest that
heâs either talking about himself been a representation of a wolf or something
that has happened to her in the past that he wants to save her from. However
the visual of him of him knelt on the floor with her coming out of her house in
a nighty suggests that heâs the wolf he wants to save himself by been with her.
After its sung that he doesnât want to corrupt you, âAnother devil on my backâ
is sung, this suggests that the guilt he feels from been with her is something
he carries around or possibly what heâs done to her is the devil to him.
Repetition of the chorus and when it says, âIâm gonna burn it downâ goes
along with the visual of them sat on white steps next to an American flag
whilst sheâs trying to light his cigarette. She looks very beautiful and is always
looking at him and touching him or hugging him in some way. However heâs
got a big wound on his head with blood running down his face, his clothes
look very untidy. They look like complete opposites of each other but they still
love each other which highlights how strongly they want to be with each
other.
5. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
MUSIC & VISUALS
In the start of the music video the first sound is a repetition of a beeping sound which
is the same sound that a car makes when the passenger or driver doesnât have their
seatbelt on. This is heard when the screen is back and give the viewer a first
impression of mystery and a desire to find out whatâs going to happen or unfold.
The music's rhythm and beat begins quiet but gradually gets louder as the screen
fades from black to a ped up of him sat on the floor. He, as if does this, becomes
more brighter and focused so that when the camera is in line with his face you can
see him clearly. When the lyrics state, âI warned you about the woodsâ, on the first
line, he looks to the side which shows his breath in the cold air and also how heâs sat
in a dark alley with only a street light for a source of brightness. We can therefore
assume at this point heâs in a very low place. Later on in the song he describes himself
as the woods, this suggests that he seeâs himself as something that needs to be
warned about.
Woods are associated with quite mysterious, lonely, haunting places and by
describing yourself as one infers that his image of himself or what sort of person he
thinks he is, is negative. The fact that heâs warned her about himself makes me
assume that heâs trying to remind her of what heâs done in the past, possibly what he
did to her in the past and by having to do this to her suggests that sheâs forgotten or
no longer cares what he did. Therefore this makes me think that they still love each
other, sheâs forgiven him for his past but heâs still holding on to what heâs done and
thatâs stopping them been together again because he doesnât want to hurt her again.
6. The beat them throughout the song gets stronger & stays at the same
rhythm until the lyrics state, âI donât want to be the one who corrupted
youâ, on the first line of the second verse. The music briefly pause at this
point when a different section of music with a different rhythm with more
instruments & layers added begins. This section of music goes along with
the visual of him knelt on the floor looking up to her bedroom. Her bedroom
looks warm and bright and heâs sat on the floor outside with only the
brightness from his car and her bedroom to provide light. The pause in
music along with this suggests that his mind-set has changed, that he realty
wants her back and is in such a stage of regret for his actions he looks as if
heâs begging her to see him.
When the chorus begins and the lyrics are sung, âI know youâre weary of
me", it shows an eye line shot of her looking directly into the camera lens
from her window but when itâs sung, âyou donât have to be scared of meâ, it
shows her looking down. When these lyrics are sung, the clearness of his
voice fades and the beat within the music becomes more clear and stronger.
This could be used to reprosent her heart racing when she seeâs him and by
making this beat louder it suggests that heâs the only thing that she can
think about and no longer cares about anything else but just is focused on
seeing him again in that moment.
7. On the forth paragraph of lyrics where it says, âI donât want to be
the one who corrupted youâ, the heavy beat slightly fades and
music that is more flowing and sounds happier builds up. The visual
that goes along with this scetion is when theyâre both sat on some
white steps with him leant on her. The visuals along with the music
change could be a representation of how she has overriden the
darkness in his life and how she has changed him to be happier and
more relaxed.
Right at the end of the video, the camera moved towards them and
suddenly his voice and the music stop and the only sound that is
playing is the sound of her flicking the lighter to try and light his
cigarette for him. This shows whatâs left after theyâre now back
together and the first stage of how theyâre going to work out his
problems together and fight any doubts they both have as to why
they shouldnât be together.
8. CLOSE UPS
During this music video they do numrous close ups on both of the main
characters in the video to capture there emotion and need to be with each
other. Its shows the relationship between them and enhances how they feel
about each other. However compared to other music videos I have anaylsed
there isnt that many. I think that this in intentional because the lyrics are
where the emotion is and by listening to them alone it shows his emotional
side and suggests how she us also feeling. The shots used most commonly are
long shots and wide angle shots and I believe they have chosen to replace lots
of close ups with these shots because it gives an outlook of how the majority
of people would look at them .
Therefore the lyrics provide what close ups usually would which is the
emotion and relationship and the visuals are to show how people outside of
their relationship would view them together. The shots that are close up are
mostly in the beginning, when he Is sat on the floor in a street or alley with
what looks to be a streetlight lighting up his face, and the close up of her
looking our of her window. I think the way they have used these close ups are
more to introduce their relationship to the viewers.
9. NOTION OF LOOKING
The convention of notion of looking by Andrew Goodwin is one that is very important
in the making of music videos like thus one. The video is about the connection between
the two main characters and how they relationship was formed as well as what's
stopping them from been together again. There are lots of shots that are off them
looking either at one an other, at the camera or by themselves. The first scene of him
heâs first shown to be looking down them turns to the side and looks slightly upwards.
We canât see what heâs looking at but the way in which he moves and his expression
suggest that heâs looking into nothing, nothing ha captured his eye nor interests him,
he just doesn't know what to do or possibly canât think of anything but her. A lot of the
scenes are of him looking directly at the camera whilst heâs singing.
I think that they have filmed it like this as if you were a passerby in his life. As I have
metioned in my previous slide I think that a lot of the video is filmed as if its from a
publics persons perspective. The viewer will feel as if he is directly talking to them and
therefore I think is a key way on how notion of looking can provoke an emotion in the
viewer because it feels as if heâs explaining his past, what's happened to them and what
he thinks of himself. The song is a very personal in depth one and it really brings how
his experiences and parts of his life have had such a big influence on him and what he
did in the past.
10. TECHNICAL ASPECTS
Camera work:
Angles that the music video use in âBBblue â use are listed below and
why I think they have been used to create an effect:
- track in- when the camera looks as if itâs moving towards her stood
in the window and when heâs knelt on the ground looking into
lens. It shows what they look like from just a pass byers view on
the situation to a very personal shot thatâs quite up-close.
- Point of view shot- when the camera is looking at the girl from
below looking up at her from his perspective which gives a sense
of the spatial differences and who's in the most venerable
position.
- Ped up- at beginning of video where it moves from the blackness
thatâs the floor and peds up the side of him to when his face is in
frame which shows that heâs in a state of mind where heâs thinking
and he doesnât care how he looks sat on the floor; heâs in his own
thoughts
- Low angle& high angle- camera looks down on him which gives
illusion of no power and the camera looks up at her which makes
her look like sheâ s in control and is more suprior than him.
- Wide angle shot- show the whole scene.
11. TECHNICAL ASPECTS
Mise-en scene:
In the music video they use lots of mise en scene to emphasise
the characters and their surroundings, they do this by:
- Costume- heâs got blood on his head and all together looks
very untidy, wearing black clothing and looks run down
whereas she has long clean tidy hair and is wearing a light
pink dress. Pale, white colours are associated with purity
which subconsciously makes the viewer think thatâs sheâs
better than he is and separates them more as two completely
different sorts of people.
- Lighting- the lighting is very important in this video- he is
always shown in very low key lit lighting where the light
sources are very small/ like the light from his car or a street
lamp behind him. Whereas she Is lit in a very warm toned
light room inside her house which gives the association of
been warm and cosy and well looked after. The contrast
between them is a very clever way of highlighting how
different they are as people and their living environments or
class status.
12. - Lighting is all artificial light in this video because itâs
filmed at night. However they haven't used a very
sharp shadow casting light which I think they have
achieved by using a fill light. At the end of the video,
him and his girlfriend are presumingly back together
and sat on some steps through the day. This is the only
section of the video where natural light is used. His
scars and the contrast between their appearances is
very obvious in this clip and I think that they have
used natural light to give a view on how people would
see them together in the street clearly or possibly
represents the purity of his mind at that moment that
isnât full of darkness.
- Deep space- between the two characters there is a
large amount of space between them until right at the
end when they get back together.
TECHNICAL ASPECTS
13. TECHNICAL ASPECTS
Editing:
In the music videos they use a range of editing techniques, these are
listed below:
- Reaction shot to show the two characters reactions to each other
when they see each other.
- Eye line match- shows their view and a more in depth view of what
they look like but also shows the each other from one of their
perspectives.
- Shot, reverse, shot- between them both when heâs knelt on ground
and sheâs in her bedroom looking out.
- Motivated cut- shots of them looking away that the viewer canât
see which brought a sense of mystery as to what theyâre looking at.
- Ellipsis- shows how the time has passed/ shows them sat on broad
daylight after been the night before in the darkness, shows that
they have worked it out and how they have moved on together.
14. TECHNICAL ASPECTS
Sound:
In this music video, sound is a big part of the production and a lot can be
told about the video through the music and lyrics as well as sounds
associated with whatâs happening in the actual video. The techniques of
sound they have used in this video are listed below:
- Sound bridge- carries same music throughout scenes when when heâs
not on screen because its telling a story of what's happening in the
clips.
- Diegetic sound- sounds at start and end when there is a blank screen/
the beeping a car makes when someone no longer had there seatbelt
on and at the end where itâs just the sound of her trying to light his
cigarette.
- Non diegetic sound â the actual music and lyrics that have been edited
in to the video.
- Synchronous sound- The sound of him singing, even though this has
been edited in the music video in post production, he is miming the
lyrics to make it look as if he is singing in that moment.
- Asynchronous sound- moments when he is singing he isnât miming the
words or heâs not in frame therefore it doesât match with whatâs been
shown on the video.
