6. What is Patriarchy?
• "Patriarchy" (derived
from patriarch in Greek
) is a term
for societies in
which male is the
favoured gender, and
in which men hold
power, dominion
and privilege.
• Male power in a
patriarchy can be found
at family, community,
social
7. • Because patriarchy defines men as the rulers, men's
and women's roles are strictly defined and, in a sense,
enforced. Women must be seen as inferior, weaker,
generally less capable, less intelligent, and less worthy.
Their work is equally considered "lower." They are
relegated to hearth and home. Cleaning, caring for the
family, and serving the husband.
• Critically, the same pressure exists for men to conform
to particular roles. Stay at home fathers are ostracized.
8. The following extract comes from the beginning of The alchemy of race and rights: diary
of a law professor, by Patricia J. Williams (1991).
Since subject position is everything in my analysis of the law, you deserve to know that it’s a bad
morning. I am very depressed. It always takes a while to sort out what’s wrong, but it usually starts
with some kind of perfectly irrational thought such as: I hate being a lawyer. This particular
morning I’m sitting up in bed reading about redhibitory vices. A redhibitory vice is a defect in
merchandise which, if existing at the time of purchase, gives rise to a claim allowing the buyer to
return the thing and get back part or all of the purchase price. The case I’m reading is an 1835
decision from Louisiana, involving the redhibitory vice of craziness. The plaintiff alleged that he
purchased of the defendant a slave named Kate, for which he paid $500, and two or three days
after it was discovered the slave was crazy, and ran away, and that the vices were known to the
defendant… It was contended [by the seller] that Kate was not crazy but only stupid, and stupidity
is not madness; but on the contrary, an apparent defect, against which the defendant did not
warrant…The code had declared that a sale may be avoided on account of any vice or defect, which
renders the thing either absolutely useless, or its use so inconvenient and imperfect, that it must be
supposed the buyer would not have purchased with a knowledge of the vice. We are satisfied that
the slave in question was wholly, and perhaps worse than, useless.
9. Unfortunately, just like racism,
patriarchy still exists, around
the world. And just like racism,
it often manifests in casual
ways that tend to go unnoticed
by the majority of people.
And women aren’t the only ones
who suffer under this everyday
patriarchy. Everyone does.
Because patriarchy demands
that those in power conform to
a specific set of rules — ones
that require the suppression of
feelings, and include a lack of
empathy.
Patriarchy around the world
10. • For the last 5000 years the global rule of men, or
patriarchy, has wreaked havoc and destructive chaos
on earth and all her children.
• This grievous fact is hardly noticed by anyone in our
species other than those who are victimized by it-
women and children.
• And even then, those who suffer at the hands of
male rule are often blamed for that which is inflicted
upon them.
13. •Religious: Male dominance is “God given.”
•Biological determinist: “Man is the hunter and dominates.”
•Marxist theorist Friedrich Engels:Women become
men’s “property.”
•Anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss: civilizations manage
social relations through the “traffic in women” or the
“exchange of women.”
•19th century theorist, Bachofen hypothesized: Matriarchal
society preceded patriarchal society in historical time.
•Suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton theorized that
“maternalist” or
mother centered societies existed in some Native American
tribes.

18. How many times we try to live a non-patriarchal life, change the
deep rooted culture. Just try the following and see why can't century
old patriarchal culture old won't change overnight !!
• Give more women leadership roles.
• Make a safe work environment for them in traditional male
dominated industries.
• Promote based on pure merit in the workplace.

20. Society pressure

-Materialism and Patriarchy together
causes rape , harassment and other
heinous crime
21. Reframe patriarchy as an issue for everyone (not just “a
women’s issue”), since men should take responsibility for altering
both themselves and challenging men around them.
As bell hooks’ quote from the beginning of this post reminds us,
“Patriarchy has no gender,” thus it’s going to take all people to
combat it.
