Paul information pack
1.
2. Release Date & Opening
Paul was released on the 14th February
2011in the UK and on the 18th of February
in the USA. In its opening weekend it
made $13,043,310 and its gross was
$37,371,385. Worldwide it made
$97,984,015 in Box Office. The budget of
Paul was $47million, and a third of that
was spent on the CGI of Paul.
It’s reviews were okay to good, it mainly
got B’s to A’s and was rated at about 7/8
out of 10 on most film sites.
3. Writing & Screenplay
The film was written by both Simon Pegg and Nick
Frost, who obviously were the main characters also.
Their final budget for the film was $47Million. The
voice of Paul was done my Seth Rogan who
obviously is a big American Comic; other actors in the
film include Jeffry Tambor, Jane Lynch and Jason
Bateman.
4. Certification
The film was given a certificate of 15. the reason
being that it had quite a lot of bad language in, it
wasn’t really overly violent though. This would have
had quite a large knock on effect to the number of
people who saw it, as obviously it is limited to
teenagers aged 15 and above. However the film was
aimed at this age group, so I don’t think that
it would have been much different if the
rating was a 12 for instance, as those
age groups would probably not have
been interested in seeing it.
5. Audience/Industry Expectations
The audience that Paul was aimed at was
predominantly male, and people of ages 15 and
above, however the desired age was probably about
18-25. The film had mainly male characters and used a
rude kind of humour which is why it appealed to men
more so.
There were high expectations for ‘Paul’ for one because
whenever Simon Pegg and Nick Frost work together on
films they are usually very good; for instance ‘Hot Fuzz’
and ‘Shaun of the Dead’. Not only that but also the fact
that it was something very different from the norm made
the expectations even higher. Nothing like this has
come around in a while or potentially ever, so big things
were expected, and on the whole it met what was
wanted of it.
6. Creation of CGI Paul
They used about $15,000,000 on the CGI of
Paul, who is potentially the main character in this
film. They spent nearly a third of their budget on
making him. The company Double Negative
made the CGI Paul, and they have also done
CGI for other films such as Harry Potter and
Inception.
However the CGI was just the first step, they
also needed him to be human like if this was
going to work as comedy, so for that they got
Seth Rogan to do the voice for him, which was
met with a brilliant reception.
7. Media Convergence
During the production of the film they made a blog and put various
videos on of them behind the scenes and the making of it. This is so
that fans of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost or any other actors playing in
the film for that matter could see how the production of the film was
going. Sci-Fi fans would also be interested in it. The benefit of this is
that it allows for the public to see what they are doing and you get a
better understanding of how the film is going and what it will be like.
Another media format to promote ‘Paul’ was Simon Pegg’s Twitter
page. He posted pictures and inside information; this is so anyone
following him can feel like they are behind the scenes and know what’s
going on. He also made his background the poster for I, so this was a
way of promoting it.
They also made a Paul IPhone app, which he made his picture with, so
this will make people want to buy it and then try it out for themselves.
A teaser trailer for the film was also released on the 18th October 2010.
It featured the song ‘Just The Two Of Us’ and ‘Run With The Rules’ it
was shown before feature films in cinemas in the United Kingdom.
8. Blu-Ray DVD Release
They released a Blu-Ray version of the film and it
included
The theatrical cut
The Unrated Version
A commentary track
Photo galleries, story boards and posters
Blooper reel
What kind of special effects went into making Paul
‘My Movies’
There is also a combo pack available, which has many
more features included in it, such ‘Paul: The Musical’
