2. About Main Raise Crew
Main Raise Crew is a Guernsey, Channel Islands based provider of offshore yacht crew employment and payroll outsourcing services.
Is a fully independent marine and aviation consultancy specialising in the registration and documentary support of yachts, aircraft and their crew.
Main Raise Crew was founded to handle the increasing volume of requests that Main Raise Yachting , his partner in france, was receiving from yacht
owners for assistance with the employment of their crew all around the world and from different nationality, fiscal residence , social security .
The requests being received from owners were resulting from the variety of complex jurisdictional issues that they were facing in terms of
employment law and the payment of tax and national insurance, for example:
-The differing jurisdiction of a yacht’s ownership, registration, homeport and areas of navigation;
-The impact of international legislation such as the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (“MLC”); and
-The personal circumstances of each crew member in terms of where they are domiciled, where they might be resident, (if they have an ‘onshore’
residence), and where they might be liable to pay tax and/or account for social security.
-It is the aim of Main Raise Crew to simplify arrangements through a practical and cost effective framework by taking over responsibility for the -
employment and payment of yacht crew on behalf of the yacht owner.
3. Advantages of Main Raise Crew
The key advantages of the Main Raise Crew employment service are as follows:
-Main Raise Crew is issued with a Statement of Compliance issued by Lloyd’s Register confirming that we are fully compliant with standard A1.4 and
guidelines B1.4 of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC).
-Crew are employed by Main Raise Crew separately from the underlying client and/or the vessel owner.
-Main Raise Crew is not only fully based on the Channel Island of Guernsey but it is also run by genuine Guernsey residents unlike some crew
companies that are registered offshore but managed onshore.
-All crew can be employed offshore even when the yacht itself is owned by an onshore company located in a jurisdiction that might not be favourable
for the employment of seafarers.
-All crew, regardless of whether they work on a private or commercial yacht, are employed within an MLC compliant environment.
-All crew, regardless of whether they work on a private or commercial yacht, are employed through a Seafarers Employment Agreement (SEA) in line
with MLC best practice requirements.
-All crew are employed from Guernsey by a Guernsey based company (i.e. non-EU) without any deductions being made at source in Guernsey for tax
or national insurance/social security.
-Main Raise Crew charges on a fixed fee basis rather than as a percentage of the crew member’s salary.
-MLC certification and ongoing compliance costs are not charged to the client unlike many of our competitors who charge clients for their initial MLC
certification and their ongoing MLC compliance.
-It is as cost-effective and straight forward to employ one crew member as it is to employ many crew members making Oceanskies Crew an ideal
employment and payroll vehicle for both small and large yachts.

4. Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (“MLC”)
Main Raise Crew holds a Statement of Compliance by Lloyd’s Register meaning that it is fully compliant with standard A1.4 and guidelines B1.4 of
the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (“MLC”) and Annex 2014.
Main Raise Crew employs all of its crew in an MLC environment regardless of whether they are working on a private or commercial yacht.
The International Labour Organisation’s MLC provides comprehensive rights and protection at work for the world’s seafarers.
It sets out seafarers’ rights to acceptable conditions of employment and aims to be globally applicable, easily understandable, readily updatable and
uniformly enforced.
A key requirement of the MLC is the necessity of seafarers to have access to efficient and well-regulated seafarer recruitment and placement system.
Companies such as Main Raise Crew that provide crew recruitment and employment services to commercial yachts will have to hold a ‘Statement of
MLC Compliance’ confirming that they are operating in accordance with Standard A1.4 and guidelines B1.4 of the MLC requirements & Annexe 2014.
5. Software
Main Raise Crew has invested in a sophisticated and secure cloud based crew payroll software programme. The software assists in enabling Main
Raise Crew to ensure that record keeping and payments are handled efficiently and accurately.
The software includes various functions including:
-The automatic notification of salary payments to crew members via SMS text and an email attaching payslips.
-The invoicing and payment of crew in multiple currencies.
-The apportionment of salary payments for the convenience of crew members in line with MLC guidance.
-The notification of up and coming qualification renewals, training courses, visas and medical certificates.
6. Procedure For Employment of Crew
The yacht owner will enter into a contract with Main Raise Crew , for the provision of crew employment and payroll services for their yacht.
In cases where a third-party yacht manager is involved it is possible to have a tripartite agreement clearly apportioning responsibility between the
manager and Main Raise Crew, so that the employment and payroll services can easily be dovetailed into the vessel’s existing management
structure.
The yacht owner and/or yacht manager funds Main Raise Crew, on a monthly standing order to cover each crew member’s salary plus costs.
In line with the requirements of MLC when employing crew we always insist on:
- holding sufficient funds to cover the crew-member’s notice period and any accrued holiday entitlement OR the inception of satisfactory insurance to
cover these obligations;
- being paid for the salary one month in advance; and
- being noted as co-assured on the yacht’s Employer’s Liability Insurance or Protection & Indemnity policy.
- Every crew member is provided with a maritime contract of employment known as a Seafarer Employment Agreement (SEA) with Oceanskies Crew,
or a subsidiary.
The crew are paid monthly in arrears on a standing order basis.
