4. WHAT IS STAR LABELING?
• An “energy efficiency rating scheme for
Electrical appliances”
5. Facts about Star Rating
• Upgrades the standards every two years
• Energy efficiency rating norms would be
revised after every two years
• Energy efficiency rating norms would be
revised from 2014 turning a five-star
refrigerator into a three-star one from January.
6. How stars are given to appliances?
• It is the average amount of electricity used by
the equipment in a year ie kWh/year under
standard test conditions.

9. Transformer Star Rating
• A transformer rated 16 KVA, losses at 50%
loading is 200 Watts, then it has got 1
and
same if 100% loading makes 555 Watts
loss.
• A transformer rated 16 KVA, losses at 50%
loading is 120 Watts, then it has got 5
and
same if 100% loading makes 400 Watts
loss.
11. Air conditioner (A/C)
• Before discussing in detail I will explain what
is EER, otherwise it will be difficult to identify
which equipment is efficient .
• EER > Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) is the
ratio of the cooling capacity of an air
conditioner in British Thermal Units
(BTU) per hour, to the total electrical
input (in watts) under certain specified
tests.
12. How an A/C is Star Rated ?
• As per current standards, an air-conditioner is
measured for its energy efficiency(EER) by
calculating the power it consumes to cool a
room to 22° Celsius when it's 35 ° Celsius
outside.
13. Cash Saved(A/c)
Q.

14. Refrigerator
Q.
How much will be the money saved for a
250 liters frost free refrigerator with no
star rating,1,2,3 and 5 star if unit cost=2.5 Rs?
A. Energy consumption per year
For no star = 1100 kWh=1100 units
1 star = 977 kWh= 977 units
2 star = 782 kWh= 782 units
3 star = 626 kWh= 626 units
5 star = 400 kWh=400 units
