Module Polymers: Through this module, students examine the different properties of the variety of polymers. Then they design and test a humidity sensor made of a polymer film. Finally, they are asked to design their own products.
This project: White Canes Motion Detector
PVDF motion detector (polymer), it detects motion and its range is 8 meters with 60 degree around it. Also, Polyvinylidene Floride polymer sensor inside it So it detects heat.

4. Activity 1: Changing polymer pellets
We Poured 0.5g of polyacrylamide
in 2 beakers labeled A(water) and
B(salty water).
Then added 10ml of water
in both cylinders and then
poured them in both
beakers.
Set the time for 10 minutes
and waited.
Took out the pellets from each
beaker and placed them on filter
paper and weighed them.
Returned the pellets back to
their beakers and then added
again 10 ml of pure water to
beaker A and 10ml of salty
water to beaker B.
Waited for another 10
minutes.
5. Activity 1: Changing polymer pellets
After that, we filtered only
beaker B, because A was
already dry.
And then we put the pellets
carefully into the filter paper to
weight them.
finally, we recorded the
results & conclusions.

6. Activity 1: Changing polymer pellets
1- Pellets swell when they’re placed in pure water
because they are made of polar monomers.
2- Pellets shrink when they’re placed in salty water
because of different water concentrations in a process
called diffusion.
8. Activity 3: Comparing the viscosity of liquids
Is the resistance of a liquid to flow,
the more viscous a liquid is the
longer the liquid takes to flow.
9. Activity 3: Comparing the viscosity of liquids
Name of liquid Molecular weight
Methanol 32
Ethylene glycol 62
Glycerol 92
We kept on turning over each one of the vials to observe
the time it took to flow (viscosity).
10. Activity 3: Comparing the viscosity of liquids
1- The Methanol(32amu) was the fastest to flow,
following it the Ethylene Glycol(62amu) and then
the Glycerol (92amu).
2- If molecule weight is high, the viscosity will be high
as well.
11. Activity 4: Testing the strength of different polymer films
is a thin layer of entangled polymer chains,
they’re used in everyday products (like: food wrapping)
We used Polyvinyl acetate
solutions that are different
in molecular weight
.100,000amu
170,000amu
260,000amu
We labeled the pipettes 7cm
and filled them with these
different solutions and then
spread them into 9 micro slides
carefully and left them to dry
for 48hrs.
12. Activity 4: Testing the strength of different polymer films
We peeled off the polymer film with a razor blade
carefully, and chose the best 2 (one 100,000amu and
one 260,000amu).
Prepared a ring stand, attached a paper clip to it that held the
polymer film, then attached another paper clip that held a 150g
weight, next to it we settled a ruler to take the measurements.

14. Activity 4: Testing the strength of different
polymer films
1- Polymer chains in a film are entangled, when a polymer
film is stretched, its chains untangle and slide past one
another, so when we have a big number of entanglements
the stretch ability will decrease but the strength will
increase .
2- high molecular weight = high number of entanglements.
3- when the molecular weight is higher, the stretch ability will
be lower, but the strength will be higher.
15. Is a device that can detect the moisture level of the
surrounding air
Filled a pipette until
4.8cm with the following:
-polymer “polyvinyl
acetate 100,000amu” x2
-indicator “cobalt chloride” x3
-solvent “butanon” x2
and poured it into a beaker
And mixed them together.
Poured the solution
into a microslide.
put the microslide
above water vapor
and observed the
Blow dried it until changes.
it completely dried
16. After putting
it above the
water vapor
Time it took 30 sec
to change
color
Change of blue to pink
color
After blow
drying the
solution
Time it took to 2 min
dry
Change of blue
color
1- Cobalt Chloride (the indicator) is blue when dry and
pink when wet.
2- Different polymers give different reactions to
different humidity conditions.
18. 285 million people are estimated to be visually impaired
worldwide. And in Qatar specifically there are about 210
visually impaired. And the white cane is one of the most
common mobility aids for the visually impaired. However, it
does not notify them before touching and object, so we
came up with this product.
19. 1- White cane.
2- PVDF motion detector (polymer), it detects motion
and its range is 8 meters with 60 degree around it.
Also, Polyvinylidene Floride polymer sensor inside it So
it detects heat.
20. PVDF is a specialty plastic material in the
fluoropolymer family; it is used generally in
applications requiring the highest purity, strength,
and resistance to solvents, acids, bases and heat
and low smoke generation during a fire event.
21. We expect this product to help the visually impaired
& the blind feel a more sense of independency and
to protect them from crashing and getting hurt.
22. 1- Notify the blind before touching a moving object or infrared
energy (IR) like humans and animals (living organisms) using sound
alerts and an extended obstacle detection range.
2- Help our blind school mates who belong to AlNoor Institute.
3- Benefit the blind in Qatar’s community and protect them from
crashing.
23. We will try our best in improving this
white cane in the future and to use
vibration instead of sound alerts. And
hopefully we can use this product to
help others in other countries.
