Dear Members
Firstly, an important message for:
ALL CRUISER RACING SKIPPERS/OWNERS
Please ensure that you have signed the CYC Cruiser Race Declaration for 2018 and that your
completed Declaration is either posted to the CYC office, or directly handed to Robin Impey, CYC
Sailing Secretary, prior to your first race.
When, as a skipper/owner, you sign the Declaration, you agree to abide by and implement the CYC
Cruiser Race Sailing Instructions, IN FULL and in every respect, including listed safety equipment and
insurance. If you do not submit a completed Declaration prior to racing you will deemed ineligible to
race, and not placed. Please ensure that your 2018 paperwork is up to date as the completed and
signed CYC Cruiser Race Declaration, is a legal document held for the year by CYC.
Bruce Long, Rear Commodore Sailing.
âThank youâ from me to you all, regarding various CYC hiccups whilst Emma is away. I am afraid I am
rusty on the Clubâs PC these days, but am happy, along with Oonie, to try to keep at least some of
the âballs in the airâ.
Thereâs lots in poop deck this week, including some information for mariners, so please do take the
time to read it.
Almost 30 people enjoyed a delicious Friday the 13th
Steak Night last weekend. It was a great
evening. We also started a Sweepstake for Saturdayâs Grand National Horse Race. Andrea, (Mike H ).
claimed the Winner at ÂŁ20. Rick Wick chose the horse that came in 2nd,
winning ÂŁ10, and Colin
Willett and Jackie Wick, won 3rd.
& 4th
at ÂŁ5 each.
Saturday evening saw a successful Cheese and Wine evening hosted by Smack Preservation Society
with 56 people enjoying old films.
The Regatta is looming, on the 2nd
& 3rd
June. Details are further down the page, but we are looking
for your unwanted âboat bitsâ for our stall this year. So please, in your Spring Clean or Fitting Out this
year, take the opportunity to make a little more space for yourself, by donating any bits and pieces
that you may no longer need.
Volunteers Needed
Saturday 2nd
and Sunday 3rd
June, if you can spare us a couple of hours, we would be most grateful
for your support. If you have a special talent, we will try to fit your job to that skill.
We need:
Marshalls, jetty and land based. People to set up the area, erecting marquees, putting out cones,
First Aiders. People to man various stands, Membership and Boat Trip Bookings, Boat Bits, Tea and
Coffee making. BBQ, Pimms tent. Cash Office duties, Radio operators. Cadet helpers, resuce boat
crews and Sonata Skippers. The all important Beer shed will be manned by staff this year. But we
need people to help keep litter down and clean down tables. Friends and family welcome too!
Please send us an email if you can help: waterside@colneyachtclub.org.uk

3. SONATA NEWS:
RYA KEELBOAT INSTRUCTOR COURSE
Our six new, very committed, trainee Keelboat Instructors spent last week on an intensive course
learning the RYA Teaching Method and how to teach seamanship skills to new sailors. The course
assumes good sailing skills and the trick is how to teach it! They all put in a huge effort, with
personal feedback on their accomplishments.
A follow-up session in May will further enhance their learning. So many thanks to everyone for huge
dedication to our Sonata project that aims to introduce newcomers to sailing and increase our
membership. The Main Committee has been very supportive, and we are also very pleased that the
RYA's active support has been rekindled. Our Sonata Maintenance Crew have been magnificent in
working through terrible winter weather to get our boats on the water, and thanks also to Ray Frost
for the loan of Sibelius. Last but not least, thanks to those of you who were trainee students on the
last two days of the training week.
TUESDAY SONATA LEAGUE
Watch this space for more details of a Tuesday evening Sonata League programme of racing. Two
