More and more senior leaders are looking for data to drive their business decisions and impact their bottom line. One key challenge facing such businesses is the ability to pivot to new technologies while maintaining investments in legacy systems they have grown to rely on. In an age where automation, internet-scale search, and advanced analytics are driving many new advances, it is important to understand that this is not only a pivot in terms of technologies, it is a pivot in terms of how we think about and utilize data of different types. Traditional systems since the 1970’s have been built around database concepts where data is physically pipelined, mapped together, statically modeled, and locked away in vaults. The types of vaults have evolved over time from basic databases, to data warehouses, to data lakes, to lake houses, and so on. The fundamental premise remains: data is placed into sealed containers, such that the critical approach is around storage, instead of being aimed at retrieval. Reversing this approach can, instead, lead to understanding data as transient, on-demand, and immediately available to end users within a certain context. This talk will discuss certain contemporary concepts that are expanding the notion of data storage devices and, instead, are moving to loosely connected data retrieval devices, or in some cases, data generation devices. We will examine this shift in approach and what it means for designing and deploying new types of technologies that can be more flexible and provide improved business value for clients in the fast-paced evolving world of Artificial Intelligence.

Nov 2014 talk to SW Data Meetup by Mike Olson, co-founder and chairman of Cloudera. In business, we often deal with hype around trends in society, politics, economy and technology. We know we need to take claims of the next big thing with a grain of salt and that we should be careful not to set expectations too high. However, with Big Data analytics, the opposite is true. The hype that accompanies it actually conceals the enormity of its impact on the way we do business. In this talk I’ll discuss how new 'Data Driven' economies are emerging through relentless innovation across the public and private sectors. Mike (co-founded Cloudera in 2008 and served as its CEO until 2013 when he took on his current role of chief strategy officer (CSO.) As CSO, Mike is responsible for Cloudera’s product strategy, open source leadership, engineering alignment and direct engagement with customers. Prior to Cloudera Mike was CEO of Sleepycat Software, makers of Berkeley DB, the open source embedded database engine. Mike spent two years at Oracle Corporation as vice president for Embedded Technologies after Oracle’s acquisition of Sleepycat in 2006. Prior to joining Sleepycat, Mike held technical and business positions at database vendors Britton Lee, Illustra Information Technologies and Informix Software. Mike has a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley.

In his book, The Nature of the Physical World, Sir Arthur Eddington commented that “We have to appeal to the one outstanding law — the second law of thermodynamics — to put some sense into the world.” This sense-making goes beyond the physical world, too. Entropy is also essential in the fields of information and communication theory. During this lecture for the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, lecturer Andrea Goulet discussed the application of entropy-related concepts in two communication systems: software and collaborative teams. She examined how concepts that help us understand systemic statistical disorder, such as ergodic systems, Lyapunov exponents, Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, and Shannon-entropy can help us optimize for both software quality and innovation. She also provided several domain-specific models: Lehman’s Laws and Conway’s Law for software, as well as new models from her own research that relate to entropy and innovation. Entropy helps us understand the world and achieve great things. There is an underlying beauty in its principles that we can use to advance scientific discovery. When we understand the subtleties related to balancing surprise and structure, we increase our chances for effective collaboration and finding novel solutions to complex problems.
