This document give you insight into how I think as a leader. What is important to me and what are things that people who work with and for me need to know about how I approach leadership. It includes non-negotiables that indicate behaviors and/or approaches that do not work for me
1. John Alan LeBihan Leadership Philosophy
To lead effectively it is essential to act and communicate to those around you in a manner that is
consistent and easily understood. My leadership philosophy is intended to provide me and the people I
am leading with the guidelines that I strive to live by in business and in life. Woven through this
philosophy is what you can expect from me each day and what I expect from those around me. There
are things that are negotiable and things that are not and that will be apparent in my philosophy.
My responsibility is to lead successful performance as defined by our customers, our shareholders, and
our leadership team. To accomplish this I am accountable to establishing goals and objectives that create
a positive environment of success where quality is a given and accountability is a must. I believe that in
business and in life the results we enable are what define our success. Effort is important however only
to the point that it creates results. Without results, effort is not measurable and not rewarded. Life and
work are difficult and making a positive impact requires leadership in many ways. I will lead by
example using a consistent and positive effort by showing patience, guidance, and understanding to
create the necessary outputs that enable results. Each day is an opportunity to improve and my mission
is to create that capability for those whose lives I effect and also for myself.
My focus is ultimately on life’s customers and their needs while ensuring those around me achieve their
goals. The needs of the customer will guide my efforts and my expectations. My expectations are the
same for the efforts and expectations of those around me. I will demonstrate energy and passion to
improve my capability to serve, to learn, to improve and to support the personal development of those
around me. Personal development must come without sacrifice to the team’s ability to achieve. I will act
in a consistent, fair and ethical manner using honesty and respect as my compass. I will bring a sense of
humor and fun to all that I do but do not mistake humor and fun as a substitute for results. Success
requires hard work and laughter makes it more tolerable however we can not focus on the fun and
laughter and not get results.
I will create an empowered environment providing people with the opportunity to lead. Using
communication skills to elicit input to better understand the thoughts and intentions of the team and
their leaders to draw out the synergy that empowerment creates. An empowered environment is one
where people feel free to think, create and address the challenges while taking time to enjoy successes.
To be clear an empowered environment is about being greater than the sum of the parts. To do this will
require people to rise up and take on challenges outside their comfort zone. There is no penalty for
stepping up and reaching beyond your personal comfort levels to expand the capabilities of the team
and your self. Taking this risk will require a higher level of communication to ensure that the ball is not
dropped.
I expect from others no more than I expect from myself: To give 100% every day. This comes with the
understanding that this type of effort manifests itself in different ways, shapes, and forms and is a
product of the day and situation. Each day I strive to be able to say I gave it all I had today. As success
in life and business is more about the influences around you than your personal efforts I expect the team
to also give their best effort every day. Effort is contagious.
I provide a direct approach and will communicate to those around me my understanding of the efforts
and expectations without a lot of extra confusion and fluff. My communication style is direct and to the
point and I expect those around me to be direct with me in return. Honest, respectful, direct
communication of thoughts, ideas, challenges, objections, and disagreements are what can be expected
from my direct approach in communication. From the team I expect the same in return. Communicate
issues immediately and with as much information as possible. Timeliness of communication is the most
important piece. Do not be afraid to respectfully challenge or disagree.
2. From me you can expect a discipline and focus towards our customers, our business, and the
expectations to achieve for both. I will respect timelines, accountability, and personal needs to enable
results. I will apply a creative mind set to achieving results and expect the same from others. I expect
those around me to use discipline and focus to achieve results. Value of an environment of collaboration
can be expected from me as well as expected from those around me. I will and expect those around me
to professionally challenge the norms, encourage creative thinking and take calculated risks to bring
exceptional solutions to challenges we face. In turn my expectation is to reward creativity that is tied to
results.
I will strive each day to improve my ability to listen and communicate. Positive, consistent
communication is a challenge. I will do my best to share my thoughts, expectations, and ideas in ways
that are clear and can be utilized by others to be successful in our mission. Communication will be direct
both positive and challenging, and will be delivered with personal respect and consideration. I will do
my best to provide the most current information to all impacted by my efforts. In return I expect the
same from those around me. Quick, concise and effective communication of challenges, results, updates
are expected. It is your responsibility to update me on your issues and progress so I can understand
your challenges and needs. Don’t wait for me to come to you. It is not up to me to consistently chase
down information.
I will live by the model of “Do what you say….Say what you CAN do” and expect others to do the same.
If you commit to an accomplishment then just get it done. If you can’t do it then communicate such and
provide what you can do. If you are stepping beyond your comfort zone and are willingly doing so, let
those around you know so they can be there to support you. Communicate more often the status to
make sure you are getting the guidance and support you need to be successful.
Non-Negotiable items are:
• Integrity in everything we do. Bring your best honest effort and apply integrity to all your
efforts.
• Bring difficult news to the forefront as quickly as possible to get the issue addressed.
• Present challenges with potential solutions. It is not acceptable to dump and run. Bring the
challenge, bring a potential solution and bring the mind set to dig in and achieve.
• Laziness is not an option – diligence, effort, team support, and respect get results. I work with an
attitude of “Whatever It Takes” and can not accept less from those around me. Time,
commitment, discipline, results – whatever it takes.
Each day I will use my leadership philosophy as a guide to my efforts to create a positive and successful
environment in my life.
