In the Fall of 1970, Hitachi launched an epoch‐making 
patent strategy. It announced that its patents, which until 
now had been kept behind doors, would be open across 
the board for licensing both here and abroad. This caused a 
major sensation. The spirit and goal of opening our patents 
was the following.
i. Promote technological exchange in the industry
ii. Promote advanced technological development
iii. Contribute to the company’s revenues through 
royalties on technology
iv. Proactively develop technology transfer as an 
industrial activity

The Semiconductor Research Institute is established with the purpose of 
obtaining the cooperation of Tohoku University researchers and industry to 
carry out research relating to semiconductor engineering and related basic 
electronic engineering based on the academic research of Dr. Watanabe and 
independent patents, and especially to contribute to Japan’s academics and 
culture by furthering the development of independent research.
