3. About MSU’s Resource Center for
Persons with Disabilities
The Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities values
full integration of persons with disabilities throughout the
university mission, programs and services. We believe that
persons with disabilities at MSU are as much in control of
their educational/work experience as a person without a
disability.
4. NVDA Screen Reader
http://www.nvda-project.org
• NVDA is a free, open source, and extremely powerful
screen reader for Windows.
• Best for web testing, because it adheres most closely to
web standards, and is updated more frequently than other
commercial screen readers.
• NVDA usage is on a steady uptrend, because in 90% of
situations it works as well as other paid products.
5. NVDA Community Add-ons Website
http://addons.nvda-project.org/index.en.html
Numerous add-ons are available to enhance the power and
functionality of NVDA. An example is the Focus Highlight
add-on we will be using tonight.
6. Basic Screen Reader Commands for
Accessibility Testing

reader-commands-for-accessibility-testing/
The Paciello Group has compiled a very comprehensive list
of useful commands for all the major screen readers.
7. Web Aim Screen Reader User Survey
http://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey5/
You should code to standards, not to specific screen readers, but
it can still be useful to keep your finger on the pulse of trends in
the assistive technology market. This survey, conducted
annually, is a useful place to start.
