5. How do you boost the Moroccan economy? By building highways –
600km every year, to be exact. That’s part of the Moroccan Ministry
of Transportation’s plan to build infrastructure that will support
local industries like mining and increase tourism by providing a
quicker, direct link between Southern cities of the country.

6. ON-SITE SUCCESS
One company chosen to help create
those highways is Houar, a family-owned
construction company based in Oujda,
Morocco. The company is the market
leader in infrastructure construction such
as dams and highways. Established in
1973 by Mr. Driss Houar, there are two
other branches in Fes and Casablanca.
Fortunately, the company has seen
steady growth over the past years.
“We are an international company and
a leader in Africa. We now have more
than 6,000 employees in Morocco. We
are fortunate that the Moroccan economy
is expanding. We haven’t really felt the
effects of the crisis,” said Mr. Hassan
Talbi, Project Manager for Houar. “Over
the next five years, our strategy is to
focus on larger projects, including three
additional highway projects, a dam and
a high-speed rail, all in Morocco.”
ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS
Houar has been tasked to create
a new, 20-km section of a 143-km
highway. It will run between the
coastal cities of Safi and El Jadida,
about 200km south of Casablanca.
The project broke ground in February
2012 and completion is scheduled for
January 2015. By May 2012, most of the
earthmoving was completed and work
was performed on the connecting roads
and bridges that cross the highway, which
face any weather conditions. Of course
the engine is very powerful and the blade
is the best. It’s very robust and precise.
Caterpillar offers the best technology,
which helps me do my job more efficiently.
It’s tough to operate a motor grader and
for sure Caterpillar cares more about
the details than the competition.”
Mr. Abdelhak Talbi, Sales Director for
Tractafric Equipment Morocco, added,
“When it comes to getting the job done
on time, Houar understands it’s not just
about getting the cheapest machines.
Because if you don’t, the penalties will
outweigh whatever savings there might
have been on the other machines. It’s
better to buy a machine knowing its value
with Tractafric Equipment and Caterpillar.”
LONG-TERM PARTNERSHIP
REDUCES ONSITE CHALLENGES
Even though the construction project is
taking place in a remote part of Morocco,
the close partnership between Houar
and Cat dealer Tractafric Equipment
has meant there are no exceptional
challenges other than those that come
with building a highway. And, with multiple
branches, Tractafric Equipment can
support and service faster. The closest
dealer is only a few hours away.
“We have a 40-year relationship with
Houar. Besides partnering with them for
a full site assessment and consulting
“It’s tough to operate a motor grader and for sure
Caterpillar cares more about the details than the
competition. I don’t want to operate any other machine.”
Mr. Haidoud Allal, Operator of Houar
TRAINING PAYS OFF
Because of the scale of the project, Tractafric
Equipment has a training policy that has
become a valuable instrument for increasing
productivity and efficiency as well as
preventing unexpected machine down time.
For both Tractafric Equipment and
Houar, training has several missions:
• Develop operator knowledge and
comfort level with technology
• Provide technique training to
meet customer expectations
• Support personnel recruitment by
providing the tools and procedures
that identify candidates’ skill level
Houar is also responsible for. “We have
to remove more than two million cubic
meters of material and add 2.8 million
cubic meters of filling,” added Hassan.
To complete the job, Houar has about
25 Cat®
machines working on site at any
one time. The Cat machines make up
85 percent of the equipment there. All
were purchased with no modifications.
Hassan showed his appreciation for his
fleet of Cat machines. “We welcome the
reliability and lower cost of ownership
over the long term. Our people prefer
to operate Cat equipment, too.”
Mr. Haidoud Allal, an operator with
32 years experience who specializes in
motor graders confirmed the affinity toward
Cat machines. “The cabin is one of the
main advantages. I feel safe and I can

for the job, we also make sure parts
arrive quickly. We have the largest
dealer network in the country. But most
important for us is that service is done
well and performed promptly. We have
trained technicians on site, or we can
send a technician. Our job is to keep
their machines up and running, whether
that’s through preventative maintenance
or repair. We make sure to deliver on
our value promises of providing cost
effective solutions and top-notch service,”
said Mr. Jaouad Bounadi, Tractafric
Equipment Morocco General Manager.
Hassan reaffirms Tractafric’s dedication
to service. “Tractafric Equipment gives
us outstanding service and support. They
react rapidly and deliver parts in as little
as two or three days. They are one of the
reasons this project is ahead of schedule.”
One challenge Houar did face, however,
was with operators’ reluctance to use
more technology. “At first, operators
were hesitant. Now, there is a better
understanding that using technology
means efficiency and accuracy and we
are currently introducing ProductLink™.
Technology is not going to take anyone’s
job away,” said Abdelhak. “We are
overcoming this by sharing technology
success stories with customers so they will
be more interested and learn the value of
using technology. It just takes some time.”

BUYING MORE THAN JUST MACHINES
The way Tractafric’s Jaouad sees it, Houar
is not just purchasing machines, they are
purchasing uptime, performance and the
confidence to get the job done right, on
time and on budget. “We have an excellent
relationship with Houar. It’s our job to make
sure we provide reliable support, service,
added value and cost-effective solutions.
The competition is always improving
service so we have to stay on top of it. The
support we get from Caterpillar is also key.”
How does the Moroccan economy stand
to benefit? “This is an area with lots
of tourism. The new highway will help
attract tourists, provide better access
to phosphate mining and improve
transportation in terms of speed and
safety,” said Jaouad. “Safi is a nice
coastal area that will now be connected
directly. Before you had to take secondary
roads that were not up to standard. Also,
it will mean road access for the port of
Safi, which is located on the Atlantic
coast, 120km from the port of Jorf Lasfar
and 300km from the port of Agadir.”
And, from Hassan’s point of view,
“Working on such a prestigious highway
is a privilege. It’s an honor to be a
part of this project. We are building
our country,” he said proudly. ■

8. REINVENTING THE
SMALL WHEEL
LOADER
Cat®
Small Wheel Loaders (SWLs) have a reputation as industry
workhorses. So when Caterpillar built the new K Series, there was
a lot to live up to. Fresh off the assembly line, the new K Series,
including the 924K, 930K and 938K, is a complete overhaul.

the linkage to the pre-programmed, lower kick-out position. The
best part is that a sensor tells the machine’s Intelligent Power
Management system to close the implement valve slowly to
cushion the catch so it’s not jarring to the operator. We call it
‘snubbing’ and it works for all three programed positions.”
QUIET AND COMFORTABLE
The redesigned cab is larger with superior comfort
and visibility. “We’ve fine-tuned everything with the
operator in mind, including a curved front windscreen
with no bond lines to obstruct the view,” said Joel.
Plus, the lower engine speed also reduces noise levels inside to
66 decibels. Joel noted that the competition typically publishes cabin
noise at 68 decibels. As a result, Caterpillar can offer options such
as Bluetooth. In the EU region, backup cameras are also standard.
The deluxe cab version includes automatic climate control and an
interactive secondary display as well as seat mounted controls
that move with the operator and a tilt and telescoping steering
wheel. There is also an optional heated and ventilated seat.
PICK YOUR LEVEL OF PROTECTION
Offering such a robust machine – especially for the waste and
recycling industries – without a comprehensive line of protection
options would be shortsighted. That’s why the new K Series
offers a debris package for the engine compartment and a
powered Cab Air Pre-Cleaner, so both the engine and operator
can breathe clean air. And, what small waste handler would
be complete with out Flexport™ tires as a factory offering?
DELIVERING MAXIMUM PRODUCTIVITY
To ramp up productivity, Caterpillar employs separate pumps
for steering and implements – a key differentiator. This
variable flow system senses work demand so there is full
hydraulic use and power at any engine speed. “When you just
have a single pump for both steering and implements, you
lose power and efficiency,” Joel said. “Caterpillar dedicates
pumps for each system so you don’t lose productivity.”
Adding to productivity is the new optimized Z-bar loader
linkage. It delivers the performance and breakout
forces of a traditional Z-bar linkage with the parallelism
and load handling capability of a tool carrier.
At the end of the day, Caterpillar didn’t just build the K Series.
They reinvented what a small wheel loader should be. ■

“We created the new K Series to deliver class leading
customer values; less fuel burn, more productivity and
increased comfort. They are new machines from the ground
up,” said Joel Grimes, SWL Marketing Engineer.
LOWER FUEL USE, INCREASED DURABILITY
Caterpillar engineers have lowered the RPM to 1,800 for up to
30 percent less fuel burn and better durability. “At 600 fewer
revolutions, the engine and hydraulic pumps accumulate fewer
cycles, resulting in reduced wear and tear,” added Joel.
The K Series is offered with an EU Stage IIIA or Stage
IIIB engine, depending on local regulations. Both
solutions are designed to meet their respective regulatory
needs with no interaction from the operator.
“The K Series is a new machine from the ground up…”
Joel Grimes, SWL Marketing Engineer
THE NEW CAT K SERIES IS A SEGMENT LEADER
• Increased fuel efficiency and durability
lower owning and operating costs
• Redesigned hydraulics maximize
performance and productivity
• State-of-the-art, comfortable operator station
Another cost saver is a smooth, step-less electronically controlled
hydrostatic drive train that matches wheel torque to underfoot
conditions to reduce wheel slip. “The operator can turn the
torque down to an ‘ice’ setting to keep the tires from spinning and
wearing the rubber off without doing useful work,” Joel said.
“SNUBBING” THE COMPETITION
One of Joel’s favorite aspects on the K-Series is its clever load-
sensing hydraulic system and “snubbing” feature. He explains it best.
“If an operator wants the machine to memorize a lower kick-
out position, he can push-and-hold a soft-touch button for
two seconds. A second button memorizes work tool position,
and a third button programs the upper condition.”
Joel continued, “We are the only ones who have that lower
kick-out position. The operator can then use the seat-mounted
joystick to command a float down and the machine will return

11. Have some concrete to demolish? Need large boulders
shattered? How about some trenching work or asphalt
breaking? The three new Cat®
E Series Hammer models
are ideal for handling such challenges and much more.
THE ONLY GLOBAL MANUFACTURER OF
MATCHING HAMMERS AND CARRIERS
Released worldwide, the H140Es, H160Es
and H180Es are the next evolution in a
continued commitment to the hammer
business. They are designed, engineered
and manufactured by Caterpillar at a new,
high-tech engineering and manufacturing
facility in Waco, Texas in North America.
Built to perfectly match Cat carriers
and their hydraulics system, these
new hammers are ideal with machines
from the 324 to the 374 excavators.
THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE
JOB, AND MACHINE
One company taking advantage of these
new heavy-duty hammers is Aclagro, an
earthworks company that specializes
in soil and demolition work. They were
one of the first in EAME to purchase the
new H160Es. Initially, the H160Es was
used to help demolish an old factory.
“We chose the Cat H160Es because
other hammers were too heavy for our
equipment and wore out machines
unnecessarily. This hammer is a perfect
fit for our 336D and 328D L CR. It will see
about eight hours of work each day at our
factory demolition site,” said Christophe
Gevaert, Demolition Engineer at Aclagro.
20 YEARS OF HAMMER
MANUFACTURING EXPERIENCE
Caterpillar has incorporated a number
of impressive features into its three new
models. “First of all, the entire hammer-
carrier system is more reliable. The carrier
is protected by the hammer’s front-
mounted accumulator, which protects the
carrier’s pumps from hydraulic pressure
spikes. And, both the machine and
operator are protected from damaging
reflective forces by a tri-suspension
you fire the hammer, you have one input
for grease. In our system, the grease is
non-stop, circulating from pressure to
the return side so the pump is constantly
giving grease to the hammer.”
A ROBUST TOOL AND CUSTOMER
SERVICE EQUAL PEACE OF MIND
When it comes to Aclagro’s new H160Es,
efficiency and tool wear play an important
role for Christophe. “We are always
looking for the best price and quality.
Caterpillar provides that, and when we are
satisfied with something, we stick to it.”
Not only are Aclagro and Christophe
happy with the hammer’s performance,
so are operators. “I have been an
operator for 28 years, and I prefer Cat.
Even though I’ve only been working with
our new hammer for a just few months,
I already notice the advantages like
the short power impact, which gives
me better feel. I also appreciate the
auto-lubrication. It makes maintenance
easier,” said Ludwig de Vuyst.
As with any piece of equipment or tool,
providing exceptional service after the
sale is important. “We have an excellent
relationship with Bergerat Monnoyeur.
I have a direct contact and can call any
time if I have a question or need support.
It’s also important for us to test equipment
before we buy it, and Bergerat Monnoyeur
worked with us so we could try the new
H160Es before we bought it. Caterpillar
has a reputation for having premium
products and they back it up with this
hammer,” concluded Christophe. ■

system,” said Bert Heijligers,
Marketing Communications Manager
at Caterpillar Global Work Tools.
Another key feature is Automatic Shut-
Off (ASO). As a hammer breaks through
material, it’s possible to “blank fire”,
meaning the hammer’s power has
nowhere to go but inside the hammer.
“That can produce a huge amount of
stress on the power cell, leading to wear
and premature failure,” added Bert.
Cat E Series hammers eliminate that
stress with a system that completely
eliminates blank firing. Faster than
a human operator can detect, the
ASO system stops the piston from
cycling when the hammer’s tool breaks
through material. No matter how
inexperienced the operator, ASO is
always actively protecting the hammer.
Rounding out the E Series’ long list of
features is a self-contained membrane
accumulator that makes testing and
recharging a routine task in the field. And,
a lower tool bushing can easily be rotated
90° to bring it back into specification.
“This is a feature that is now unique to
Caterpillar,” said Stefan Van Haverbeke,
Sales Manager at Bergerat Monnoyeur
Belgium. “Plus, there is better protection
for the wear of the bushing. An indicator
below the tool seal shows the amount
of wear. We can replace the bushing
on the jobsite, so the hammer doesn’t
have to be disassembled,” he added.
Another competitive advantage Stefan
pointed out is the models’ Autolube
Connection and grease channel. “Our
automatic greasing system uses an extra,
third hose. With the competition, when

THE NEW C SERIES ARTICULATE
Performance is priority number one
The main reasons, however,
were to increase customer
value and level the playing field
when it comes to performance.
To see what went into creating
a more powerful, versatile and
operator-friendly machine –
including a key feature found
only on Cat®
articulated trucks
– Cat Magazine spoke with
Rob Macintyre, Caterpillar
Articulated Truck Specialist.
WHAT WAS THE THINKING
BEHIND THE NEW C SERIES?
Because we had to upgrade
emissions, we took advantage of
that opportunity to significantly
enhance the value of the
C Series for customers. Our
main focus was to deliver a big
increase in performance and
incorporate other upgrades
and new features that make
the machines easier to operate
and add to operator comfort,
safety and durability.
WHAT ARE SOME OF
THE IMPROVEMENTS?
Our current 725, 730 and
730 Ejector have a very
good reputation in the market
for quality and reliability.
So we really wanted to
push the performance for
all three machines, mainly
through the powertrain,
engine and transmission.
On the 725C, we actually
downsized the engine from a
Cat C11 ACERT™ to a Cat C9.3
ACERT. Even with the smaller
engine, we are getting a 5
percent increase in power and
a 20 percent increase in torque.
We kept the same transmission
as the previous model, but
incorporated Advanced
Productivity Electronics Control
Strategy (APECS) shifting
technology for a much smoother
and more efficient shifting
transmission, especially on
grades and under acceleration.
The biggest changes are on
the 730C. It gets a 16.5 percent
increase in power and a 30
percent increase in torque. Part
of that is because we’ve moved
from a C11 to a C13 engine.
There’s also a new transmission
– the CX31 – and combining this
with the more powerful engine
enables the powertrain to deliver
new levels of performance
down to the wheels. That
transmission also uses the
APECS shifting technology.
Also, on the 730C and
730C EJ, we moved to an
engine compression brake,
similar to what we have on
larger articulated trucks.
Up to 10% more
productivity (730C)
Up to 5% less
fuel (725C)
Caterpillar recently released its new C Series articulated
trucks, the 725C and 730C – including the 730C EJ
ejector variant. There were a couple of drivers behind
producing the new C Series. One is new emissions
legislation, which became effective in January 2014.
Cat Magazine12
13. .............................................................................................................NEW PRODUCT INTRODUCTION
ED TRUCKS
It gives a 60 percent increase
in retarding power so operators
are more confident and have
less need to use the service
brake while going down grades.
WHAT IS APECS SHIFTING?
Shifting on the previous
articulated truck series is based
on engine speed. To further
improve customer value, the
new C Series uses APECS
shifting, which is focused on
engine torque. As soon as the
transmission senses enough
torque coming from the engine,
it shifts gears. It will shift gears
lower on the rev range, which
saves a lot of fuel and power.
WHAT ARE SOME
TECHNICAL ADVANCES?
The most notable advance is
automatic traction control for the
730C and 730C EJ. Operators
typically lock the differentials
on articulated trucks when
underfoot conditions deteriorate,
or on slippery grades. No other
competitor has a fully automated
system like the Cat 730C.
The machine senses when it
needs to engage differentials
through sensors on the wheels
and steering system. As soon
as the machine realizes the
differential locks should be
engaged, the system does all
the work for the operator so he
can concentrate on operating
more efficiently. It’s a huge
benefit when it comes to ease of
operation. For example, rental
companies can rent the machine
without an operator because
they know an inexperienced
operator won’t damage it.
WHAT INDUSTRIES AND
WORKSITES ARE THESE
MACHINES MADE FOR?
The 725C, 730C and
730C EJ are versatile machines
that are made for lots of different
applications. Mainly, these
trucks are for earthmoving,
construction and infrastructure
job sites when you need a
hauling unit that combines
excellent maneuverability, low
ground pressure and the ability
to cope with challenging ground
conditions and steep grades.
WHAT ABOUT OPERATOR
COMFORT AND STYLING?
Both machines received cab
updates focused on improving
the ergonomics, specifically
the controls. There are better
machine information displays
and a vastly improved air
conditioning performance.
We also improved the
lighting and visibility.
And, because of the conditions
machines like these work
in, the front bumper is quite
vulnerable to damage. So we
totally redesigned the front
bumper and forward area under
the engine to make it a lot
more durable. In the long run,
that will contribute to improved
resale value for the customer.
HOW DO THESE
IMPROVEMENTS FIT
THE EAME MARKET?
EAME, and especially Europe,
is a very demanding market
for these sizes of articulated
trucks and for performance.
Traditionally, when people
want performance they go
to our bigger machines. But,
the jobsites in Europe are far
more fitted to the 30-ton class.
It’s the one area in which we
had a gap to bridge and we
really feel the performance,
particularly on the 730C, is
going to give us the edge we
need to meet the demand for
performance that customers
in Europe are looking for. ■

AN IDEAL RENTAL MACHINE
• The C Series is more resistant to damage
under varying jobsite conditions.
• Wide-set headlights increase visibility and a
class-leading handrail, guardrail and operator
platform help to ensure operator safety.
• Automatic Traction Control engages the correct combination

the risk of operator errors that can damage the machine.
WHAT ARE CUSTOMERS SAYING
ABOUT THE NEW C SERIES?
“Machine performance is significantly improved,
specifically rim pull, speed on grade and retarding power.
Fuel efficiency is excellent and the operator compartment
is comfortable and much cooler – even with the air
conditioning turned off.

MORE MACHINE
FOR THE MONEY
The Cat®
D Series excavators are market leaders and a customer favorite thanks to industry-leading controllability, balance,
digging, lifting power and, of course, the resulting productivity. So when customers wanted machines with lower owning and
operating costs that are still durable, reliable and perform, Caterpillar responded. The result is the new D2 Series excavators.
Each model maintains the advantages of the original D Series but with improved engine robustness and lower operating costs.
THE ROBUST 320D2L
The primary goal with the new D2 Series
is to deliver more value for money. To
do that, Caterpillar engineers made
improvements from the inside out.
The 320D2L received the Cat C7.1 engine,
which replaced the C6.4/C6.6 electronic
engine used on the 320DL. The C7.1
uses a mechanical injection fuel system
and operates at lower pressure than the
previous electronic engine and is less
sensitive to potential fuel contaminants.
Also for the 320D2L, operating costs
have been lowered. Most notably,
fuel consumption has been reduced
by 5 percent thanks to fewer engine
RPM and by increasing main pump
efficiency and displacement from 114
to 119 cc/rev (cm³/revolution) – all
while maintaining performance.
Helping reduce fuel use even more is a
new fan design, which reduces fan loss,
and a downsized gear pump (compared
to the C6.4-equipped 320DL) that’s
used for the pilot circuit. Finally, the
number of fuel filters has been reduced
to two while the service interval has
increased from 250 hours to 500 hours.
THE FUEL SAVVY 323D2L
When it comes to the 323D2L, fuel
consumption has been reduced by a
massive 11 percent. It’s the ultimate
solution where fuel cost is high or for
customers needing a combination
of superior performance, lower fuel
consumption and an additional 12 percent
in power compared to the 320D2L.
Impressive results like these have
been made possible thanks to an on-
demand engine power strategy, also
called isochronous control, which is
possible thanks to a unique approach
to optimizing component integration.
Isochronous control allows the 323D2L
engine to run at constant and significantly
lower engine RPM – 1,700 RPM
versus 1,980 RPM on the 323D.
Fuel injection is controlled using
parameters from the hydraulic system
so the machine can proactively predict
the need for power. Meanwhile, a main
pump improvement prevents turbulence
and there is also an on-demand fan.
And, just like the 320D2L, performance is
maintained by increasing the main pump
displacement from 114 to 119 cc/rev.
While it’s true that electronic fuel systems
are more susceptible to damage than
mechanical systems in general, some
electronic systems are less susceptible
than others. This is the case with the
323D2L. Its C7.1 engine uses an electronic
injection fuel system that has been
Cat Magazine14
15. .............................................................................................................NEW PRODUCT INTRODUCTION
carefully selected and tested to ensure
superior robustness. Plus, to prevent any
potential issues due to fuel contamination,
a completely new filtration system that
uses Cat ultra-high efficiency filters has
been introduced to ensure fuel cleanliness.
“Between these two machines and
the others in the D2 Series model line,
these new controls optimize machine
performance to achieve new industry
standards for fuel consumption and
efficiency,” said Zach Kauk, Caterpillar
Global Product Manager for small and
medium hydraulic excavators. “In addition,
the updated machines also come equipped
with an electric priming pump. Any time a
customer changes fuel filters, the system
is automatically primed to start, eliminating
the need to pre-fill the fuel filters
during a change, which can introduce
contaminants into the fuel system.”
And, speaking of starting, there were
also improvements made to the D2
Series starting system. “We put in a
60 percent larger starter motor and a
130 percent larger alternator, which

SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE,

Perhaps what’s most remarkable is that

didn’t compromise performance to
lower fuel consumption and decrease
operation costs. The Cat industry-leading
controllability, balance and power are
still there. And, experienced operators
will enjoy improved torque response.
By increasing fuel efficiency and making
improvements that reduce maintenance
and increase uptime on the entire D2
Series range, Caterpillar has lowered
owning and operating costs. That’s
the kind of superior performance and
premium value customers expect
– and Cat equipment delivers. ■

16. THE NEW CAT®
GENERAL DUTY UNDERCARRIAGE
HOW NEW IRON GIVES
MACHINES NEW LIFE
The undercarriage on excavators and track-type tractors is an
essential part of the machines’ operation. And while most might
not think about their undercarriage as a system, having the right
one operating under equipment can make a big difference.
Consider this: up to 50 percent of a track-type
tractor’s owning and operating costs are spent on the
undercarriage. So, when the time comes to replace
an undercarriage because it is worn out or no longer
suitable (i.e., when changing application), the decision
over which one to choose becomes crucial. And
Caterpillar has engineered quite a unique and capable
range of solutions to meet customers’ expectations.
ROLLING ON AND ON
The Cat®
General Duty Undercarriage is a Genuine Cat
product designed and manufactured by Caterpillar and
available exclusively through Cat dealers. Available today
for the 320 series hydraulic excavators (models 315 to 321)
as well as the D6M/N and D6H/R/T track-type tractors, it
is the perfect option for machines that don’t require the
elevated performance of other Cat Undercarriage solutions.
“If customers want to keep a machine for another
4,000 hours but don’t want to invest in a Premium
Undercarriage product, General Duty is designed for
fit and performance. We only use Premium seals to
help keep everything working properly. And, because
General Duty parts are interchangeable with our
Greased Lubricated Track (GLT) on excavators, there is
no need for retrofitting, which decreases unnecessary
downtime,” explained Alain Montillet, Caterpillar
Undercarriage Consultant for Africa and Middle East.
“It gives us a solution for every
application and every budget.”

17. THREE KEY FACTORS WHEN
CONSIDERING GENERAL DUTY
Caterpillar is the first to admit that the General Duty
Undercarriage may not be the best Caterpillar undercarriage
option for every customer or application. “It breaks
down to man, material and machine. Planned length of
ownership, the materials the machine will be working
with and what kind of machine the undercarriage will go
on should all be taken into consideration,” said Raquel
Dias, Caterpillar Undercarriage Consultant for Europe.
Olivier Laflandre, Parts Manager of Bergerat Monnoyeur
France takes a similar approach. “We want to give our
customers the best cost per operating hour. We discuss
three specific areas before recommending General
Duty: customer needs, the application and machine
configuration. If the answers best match what General
Duty is made for, that is the recommendation we make.”
THE PERFECT FIT
Today, more and more customers are looking for a solution
that’s comparable to the Cat General Duty Undercarriage.
For a lower initial investment, customers can extend
the life of their track-type tractors (D6N/M and D6H/R/T
models) and excavators from the 315 to the 321 models.
“The General Duty Undercarriage is a natural extension
for us,” says Alain. “We have the most complete
undercarriage product range in the world. Today the
EAME market is very competitive. This is one of the
reasons why Caterpillar made General Duty. It gives us
a solution for every application and every budget.”
Laurent Lucand, Undercarriage and GET Specialist at
Bergerat Monnoyeur France agrees. “It’s very unique
in our industry to have such a complete undercarriage
offering. Because of this market’s competitive nature, we
needed a product that’s the preferred alternative to the
competition and one that fits our customers’ needs. We
found that in the Cat General Duty Undercarriage.” ■

LEADING EDGE TECHNOLOGY
When it comes to operating and managing
equipment and production, technology is
playing a bigger role than ever. And while
customers understand the benefits technology
can deliver, selecting the appropriate products
and reporting tools can be challenging.
That’s why Caterpillar is introducing Cat®
Connect
Solutions – a new marketing framework that simplifies and
clarifies how technology can increase safety, efficiency
and profitability. Cat Connect Solutions brings technology
and services together in solution sets. Each solution set
is defined in simple terms and by customer value. For this
article, we’ll cover two of the five solutions sets in detail.
“What we’ve done with Cat Connect Solutions is made it
easier to navigate our range of technological capabilities
so customers can save money, increase productivity
and improve safety. Customers can get in on any level,
experiment and change or grow as needed,” said Kjeld
Jespersen, EAME Technology Marketing Manager.
EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS:
MONITORING TO MANAGE COSTS
Equipment Management Solutions (EMSolutions) helps
manage assets and lower operating costs. “Using these
diagnostic, analytic and reporting tools and working with
their Cat dealer, operators and owners can gain insight
about enhancing machine availability and use while
managing maintenance and equipment life,” said Kjeld.
When connected through Product Link™, and its user-friendly
web interface, VisionLink®
, it’s easy to see whether machines are
being used efficiently and effectively and to answer questions like:
• “What’s work time vs. idling time?”
• “How much fuel is being consumed?”
• “Would it be better to re-assign machines
to other tasks or work sites?”
KNOWING THE ANSWERS CAN ADD UP TO
SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS IN TIME AND MONEY.
“Say the idle time for your fleet shows 40% on average,”
says Kjeld. “The machine is accumulating hours and
consuming expensive fuel, yet producing no results. This
affects maintenance schedules and can lower resale value.
WITH CAT®
CONNECT SOLUTIONS,
FIVE FLEXIBLE SOLUTION SETS GIVE
CUSTOMERS JOBSITE CONTROL
Equipment Management Solutions help you
increase uptime and lower operating costs by
tracking equipment location, health, utilization and
fuel consumption for a comprehensive overview
of all assets from anywhere in the world.

PRODUCTIVITY SOLUTIONS: REAL-
TIME CONTROL AND FEEDBACK
The name says it all when it comes to the Productivity Solutions
set. By monitoring loads, cycles, payload, volumes and
controlling grade and compaction, customers can gain the
efficiency they need to reach production and business goals.
A primary Productivity Solution is the AccuGrade™ Grade
Control System. It combines digital data, in-cab operator
guidance features and automatic blade controls to help
maintain a consistent grade, all while increasing productivity.
Cat Grade Control, another Productivity Solution, comes fully
integrated into machines from the factory. It helps both new and
experienced machine operators deliver dramatic improvements
in grading efficiency over a wide range of applications. Ready
and easy-to-use, Cat Grade Control helps customers make
significant savings on material, fuel, personnel and time.
PEOPLE PUTTING TECHNOLOGY TO WORK
Cat Connect Solutions is more than just technology. It’s
the people behind the technology that make Caterpillar a
leader and help customers succeed. Cat dealer expertise,
product support and services are unmatched – and so
is the commitment to helping customers take advantage
of technology solutions to get results. Cat dealers know
equipment and have extensive jobsite experience. And, now
with Cat Connect Solutions, they have everything needed
to give construction customers the competitive edge.
Occasionally, even with the best equipment, machines and
related technology products require repair. Cat dealers
are the single contact for support in partnership with the
SITECH™ distribution network – a unique joint venture
between Trimble®
and Caterpillar. So wherever customers
have a Cat dealer, they have a SITECH dealer as well.
“With the Cat dealer network, our customers have a single point
of contact that can provide all the training and support needed to
get the most out of Cat Connect Solutions,” concluded Kjeld. ■

20. CAT REMAN
PROVES ITS
WORTH
Caterpillar has been remanufacturing parts for
more than 40 years. What started as customer
requests for remanufactured on-highway truck
engines in Iowa, USA, has expanded globally
to include drivetrains, engines, hydraulic and
electronic systems and even undercarriages.
REPAIR OPTIONS
Cat Reman is one of the repair
options available to customers
through their Cat dealer, along
with component rebuild, service
exchange components, rebuild
parts kits and new parts. Owners
of Cat equipment can chose
the option that best suits their
requirements and the age of the
equipment. This article focuses
on Cat Reman engines.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR CUSTOMERS?
Cat Reman is the official
name of the Caterpillar parts
remanufacturing program.
And if you ask any recent Cat
Reman customer what they
appreciate most about the
program, you’ll most likely
get the same response –
savings on like-new parts.
That’s because Cat Reman can
save customers 40 to 60 percent
on parts that are warrantied
and remanufactured to the
specifications of new parts. It’s
a welcome option in an industry
that’s putting more and more
emphasis on lowering the
costs of owning and operating
heavy equipment. In addition
to the significant savings,
there are other advantages
customers will appreciate.
“Besides cost savings, another
big advantage of Cat Reman is
speed. When you get right down
to it, Cat Reman is simply an
exchange program,” said Leah
Bachert, Caterpillar Reman
Marketing Manager. “Even
though customers turn in their
old engine core, they don’t have
to wait for it to go through the
remanufacturing process since,
across the globe, remanufactured
engines and other parts are in
stock and ready to be delivered.”
Dan Berube, Reman Commercial
Manager for EAME and CIS,
reinforced the speed at which
Cat Reman parts can be
delivered. “If a Cat®
dealer
has the remanufactured
part a customer needs in
stock, a technician could
potentially begin performing
an installation the same day.”
And, customers are buying into
the idea behind Cat Reman. “We
get a lot of positive feedback
from our dealers, which reflects
what they are hearing from
customers. Bottom line is that
the price point is very popular
for a genuine part they can
trust. Off-the-shelf availability
is also a big plus, since a lot of
customers measure their costs
on a per hour basis. Every hour
that machine is down costs
them money,” said Leah.
AS GOOD AS NEW
The other major compelling factor
drawing customers to Cat Reman
is the warranty. “Everything we
remanufacture is tested the same
way its equivalent new part is
tested. We don’t compromise
on quality. That’s why we can
offer the same warranty on our
remanufactured engines and
parts that would be provided on
the equivalent new engine or
part,” Leah said with confidence.
TECHNOLOGY MATTERS

while achieving significant cost
savings. “We made substantial
investments in engineering,
technology and infrastructure up
front. We have the edge when it
comes to our technologies like
the advanced salvaging and
environmentally friendly cleaning
processes we developed. With
the economies of scale we have,
we can justify these investments
and then use them to pass cost
savings on to our customers.”
HOW THE CAT REMAN
PROCESS WORKS
Those savings starts from the
very beginning of the Cat Reman
process. “One of the keys to
our success is our ability to get
components clean and back
to their original bare metal.
Our competition just doesn’t
have the level of commitment
or investment that we do. It’s a
big differentiator for us and a
huge benefit for our customers,”
added Ian Vickers, EAME Cat
Reman Marketing Consultant.
For engines, it starts with
the engine core. First, it is
disassembled down to individual
elements. Next, each of those
elements goes through a
cleaning process. Then, each
Cat Reman has
facilities around the world
part that will be used in the
remanufacturing process is put
through rigorous qualifications,
testing and updating to meet
original specifications.
“For example, with an engine
cylinder head, the cylinder
casting is evaluated to ensure
it meets or can be restored
to meet all our dimensional
requirements. We can even
build back up the wear surface
using metal deposition, which
is spraying molten metal back
on the surface.” Plus, not
only are engines and parts
remanufactured to like-new
condition, during the process,
any critical design improvements
or upgrades are made. “Only
Caterpillar and its dealer
network have access to the
original specifications and
engineers. It’s a tremendous
advantage,” Leah says.
CAT REMAN MEANS
SUSTAINABILITY
Of course, remanufacturing also
contributes to sustainability since
a lot of energy and materials are
saved or reused. Leah estimates
that the intake of materials in
2012 was around 78,000 tonnes.
According to catreman.cat.
com, overwhelmingly fewer
resources are consumed to
remanufacture a component
than to build a completely new
one. In fact, remanufacturing
is more environmentally
friendly than recycling in that
remanufacturing dramatically
reduces the volume of resources
needed. Fewer parts are thrown
away, reducing landfill pollution.
And, what was once viewed as
waste, is now being reused.
REMANUFACTURING SEES GROWTH
All Caterpillar customers,
including marine and industrial,
are potential customers for
Cat Reman, and of course
that population is growing.
“We are constantly pursuing
new opportunities. We have
a dedicated R&D team that is
always looking at technology
and finding innovative
ways to give these parts
new life. So the opportunity
scope changes constantly
as that new technology
develops,” stated Leah. ■
