Cosmetics - “Articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on,
introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body or any part thereof
for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the
appearance without affecting structure or function. ”
Drugs - “Articles intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment,
or prevention of disease” and “articles (other than food) intended to affect the
structure or any function of the body of man or other animals. ”

The definitions and regulations of cosmetics in Indian markets are slightly or significantly
different from those in the US and also from one another

• Growing consumer demand – organic products – natural ingredients -
believed to be healthier and safer - synthetic pairs
• NOT necessarily true
• An ingredient’s source does not determine its safety
• To many consumers, naturally sounding ingredients, such as aloe extract,
chamomile extract, and lemon seed extract, mean natural ingredients and
equal safety
• Natural ingredients can be synthetized in laboratories - results in - same
chemical structure and physical characteristics
• Ingredient name - does not mean it has a natural origin
• Careful with natural ingredients - adverse effects - skin irritation,
sensitizations, phototoxicity and allergy
