THE FIRST BUCKET
KFC is synonymous with
the big bucket of chicken,
so you might be a little
suprised to learn that the
first bucket wasn’t sold
until 1952 – 12 years after
the recipe was invented
by the Colonel

5. STRENGTHS
• Second best global brand in fast food industry in terms
of value ($ 6 billion). KFC is known by many and is a
trustworthy brand in many countries mainly due to its
early franchising and international expansion.
• Original 11 herbs and spices recipe. KFC original chicken
recipe is a trade secret and a source of comparative
advantage against firm’s competitors.
• Strong position in emerging China. KFC receives half of
its revenue from China, where it operates more than
4,000 outlets. KFC position in China is one of its main
strengths as China’s fast food market is growing steadily.
• Combination of KFC – Pizza Hut and KFC – Taco Bell. KFC
partnership with other Yum! Brands yields some
advantage as the restaurant can offer items from its
partners.
• KFC is the market leader in the world among companies
featuring chicken as their primary product offering.

6. WEAKNESS
• Untrustworthy suppliers. Over the years, KFC has been
contracting suppliers, which supplied contaminated poultry
to KFC or were mistreating chicken, thus resulting in falling
sales and damaged reputation.
• Negative publicity. KFC receives much criticism from PETA
over the conditions chickens have been raised. Furthermore,
it received bad publicity for selling chicken wing with kidney.
• Unhealthy food menu. KFC menu is largely formed of high
calorie, salt and fat meals and drinks. Such menu offering
prompts protests by organizations that fight obesity and
hence, decreases KFC popularity.
• High employee turnover. Employment in KFC is a low paid
and low skilled job. It results in low performance and high
employee turnover, which increases training costs and add to
overall costs of KFC.
The KFC slogan
“finger licking’ good”
was, however, a little
lost in translation
when they opened in
China, as it translated
to “eat your fingers
off”.

7. ORGANIZATION CULTURE AND
STRUCTURE
• KFC offers different diversity of food choices,
different cultures in the rest of the world.KFC
workers are from different parts of the world
with different culture.
• They take decisions only after considering the
values and norms of different culture.
• Most restaurants are furnished with images
of the company founder.
• Organization structure differs as operation
level and cooperative level. The difference is
in working activities.
• The operational level management is
concerned with the restaurant business ,
where as cooperative level concerned with
the business activities.
• Second pillar

8. OPPORTUNITIES
• Increasing demand for healthier food. While demand for healthier food increases,
KFC could introduce more healthy food choices in its menu and reverse its
weakness into strength.
• Home meal delivery. KFC could fully exploit (it test deliver services now) this
opportunity and reach more customers.
• Introducing new products to its only chicken range. KFC could introduce new
meals to its menu and offer pork, beef or only vegetarian meals, which would
target wider consumer group and would result in more costumers.

9. THREATS
• Saturated fast food markets in the developed
economies. The fast food market in the developed countries
is already overcrowded by so many fast food restaurant
chains and this already proves to be a threat to KFC.
• Trend towards healthy eating. Due to government and
various organizations attempts to fight obesity, people are
becoming more conscious of eating healthy food.
• Local fast food restaurant chains. Local fast food restaurants
can often offer a more local approach to serving food and
menu that exactly represents local tastes.
• Currency fluctuations. KFC receives part of its income from
foreign operations. That income has to be converted into
dollars and may affect the business' profits.
• Lawsuits against KFC. KFC has already been sued for many
times and lost quite a few lawsuits. As KFC continues to
operate more or less the same way, there is high probability
for more expensive lawsuits to come.

COLONEL SANDERS
The man behind Colonel
Sanders is actually
Harland Sanders,he would
even allow customers to
dine at his own dinner
table!
10. RESPONSIBILITY
• THERE’S MORE TO US THAN GREAT FOOD
• KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN FOUNDATION We believe in a world where educational
opportunities are available to everyone, where we never give up on helping
people achieve their dreams.
• Colonel Sanders was passionate about changing lives for the better. And so are we.
• The KFC Foundation, an independent non-profit organization, provides charitable
support to KFC U.S. restaurant employees through education, hardship assistance
and personal finance programs.

11. CONCLUSION
• Harland Sanders is an excellent example of somebody who’s dream
to change the life of success.
• KFC should consider focusing on growing markets such as India. As
expected. It has heavy competition from large companies such as
McDonald’s, Burger King and Subway, as it is a very competitive
market. Overall, it is in a pretty good position.
• If you're overwhelmed by rejection or discouraged by setbacks,
remember the story of Colonel Harland Sanders. Fired from
multiple jobs, ruined his legal career, was set back by the Great
Depression, fires and World War II, yet still created one of the
largest fast food chains in the world. Sanders wouldn't let anything
or anyone defeat him. We should all be more like Colonel Sanders
(besides the fighting and getting fired part).
