India’s sugar output will fall 19% this season due to poor crop yields in
Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, a decline not steep enough to
warrant imports yet, the apex industry grouping said in its revised estimates
Tuesday. The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said output in the
2016-17 season beginning October would be about 20.3 million tones,
compared with 25.1 million tonnes in the earlier season. In January this
year, ISMA had forecast production of 21.3 million tonnes. "Considering
the opening balance of 7.75 million tonne, and an estimated production of
20.3 million tonnes and consumption of 23.8-24 million tonnes, the closing
balance in the current season would be 4-4.2 million tones,” ISMA said in
a press statement. “This balance will be enough to meet the domestic
requirement until almost end of November 2017." India’s sugar production
fell from a high of 28.3 million tonnes in 2013-14 to 25.1 million tonnes in
2015-16, and hit a seven-year low of 21.3 million tonnes in 2016-17 after
two consecutive years of drought starting 2014.
West Bengal government has procured 7.52 lakh metric tonne of paddy
till February 24, according to Jyotipriyo Mallick, state food and supplies
minister. The minister said the government had procured 38.59 lakh metric
tonne of paddy in Kharif marketing season (KMS) of 2015-16. Altogether
328 centralised procurement centres have been set up in the state. He said
the state government would meet the procurement target ahead of its
schedule, adding that 18 lakh farming families were benefited in the last
KMS. In 2017 so far, he said 3.2 lakh farmer have sold paddy. The food
and supplies department along with health and family welfare department
jointly run a programme to combat malnutrition. Nearly 4,000 children
suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) identified by the Health
department, are unit wise (mother and SAM child) being provided 5 kg
rice, 2 kg wheat, 1 kg masur dal and 1kg Bengal gram per month free of
cost for six months. Introduced in October 2014, the project has been very
effective, the minister said.
The export of soybean meal and its other value added products
showed an increase of 594.40% during February 2017. As per data
compiled by Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA), the
export has been pegged at 207,977 tonnes compared to 29,951 tonnes
in February 2016. On a financial year basis, the export during April
2016 to February 2017 stood at 8,09,271 tonnes as compared to
3,60,652 tonnes in the same period of previous year, showing an
increase of 124.39%. Further, during current oil year (October -
September), total exports during October 2016 to February 2017 stood
at 7,33,539 tonnes as against 1,59,124 tonnes last year, showing an
increase of 360.98%.
Turmeric futures traded lower on NCDEX on heavy arrivals from
the producing regions. The turmeric arrivals in the country increase to
54,641 tons during February 27- March 4 compared to 28,454 tons
during previous week. Though, some losses were capped on rising
exports as well as domestic demand at the spot market. On the export
front, country exported about 82,115 tons during April-December
period, up by 28% compared to last year exports of 64,105 tons. The
contract for April delivery was trading at Rs 6726.00, down by 1.64%
or Rs 112.00 from its previous closing of Rs 6838.00. The open interest
of the contract stood at 14030 lots. The contract for May delivery was
trading at Rs 6750.00, down by 1.20% or Rs 82.00 from its previous
closing of Rs 6832.00.
JSoyabean futures traded lower on NCDEX due to ample supplies in
the domestic physical markets. Further, lower prices in international
markets too added pressure on domestic prices. Though, increase in
exports of soybean meal capped some losses. The reports from SOPA
stated that, soymeal exports rose over sevenfold to 207,977 tonnes in
February 2017, compared to 29,951 tonnes in February 2016 showing
7-fould increase in exports.
